INTRODUCTIONMost mobile communications devices now fall into two distinct groups.The first group includes Wideband Code Division Multiple Access(W-CDMA) and Evolution-Data Only (EVDO) type simple telephonehandsets and feature phones, and the second group includes mobilecomputing devices such as Pocket PC (PPC) and Palm which havebeen called communications enabled personal data assistants (PDAs).Out of these groups have emerged two extremely popular technologiesone of which is the smartphone and the other tablet. For antennaengineers a welcome side eÆect of these changes has been a slowingof the previous demand for smaller phone footprints and it is nowreasonable to assume that smartphones will have a diagonal dimensionof at least 10 cm to allow for a touchscreen. The inductive and lossy nature of biologicalmatter at the frequencies used for popular mobile communicationstends to cause detuning and loss ofQ [1]. Further, the rates of change ofdetuning and Q vary as a function of distance from the skin’s surfaceand as a function of frequency. This frequency dependent nature ofperturbation is a particular problem for multiband antennas held closeto the ear and face. The authors of [2] and [3] discuss perturbations dueto the proximity of metal items near mobile phone antennas. Despitethe drawbacks metal box type phone covers are particularly popularin smart phones. For laptop computers, where space is less restricted,several designs for slot antennas incorporated into the metal shieldingof the case have been researched [4, 5].In this paper, two novel slot antennas are built on the twoends of a full metal back covered smart phone. One antenna coversGSM 850/900 (824–960MHz), DCS (1710–1880MHz), PCS (1850–1990MHz) and WCDMA (1920–2170MHz) and the other coversGPS and WIFI 2.4GHz bands. Simulations and measurements arepresented for these antennas. An industry standard phantom hand isalso included in our experiments. In addition a brief discussion on thewideband matching of slot antennas is also included.The rest of this paper is structured as follows. In Section 2, adiscussion of the shape of our proposed slot antenna and its associatedfeed structure is presented. The contents of Section 3 deal with thepractical aspects of implementing the theory discussed in Section 2.Section 4 contains details of two antennas with both simulations andmeasurements. Finally Section 5 includes detailed conclusions on theresults in the paper as well as suggested improvements to design.2. CONSIDERATION OF THE SLOT SHAPE AND FEEDSTRUCTUREFor small antennas Q factor is a useful parameter for judgingperformance. By considering the energy relationship Q can beexpressed asQ = 2ºaverage stored energyenergy loss per cycle(1)where for an antenna the stored energy accounts for the reactivenear field while the energy loss represents losses and useful radiatedelectromagnetic energy [6–8]. Both the slot shape and feed willhave significant impacts on the bandwidth of a slot antenna so bothwill be considered here. The parallel circuit shown in Figure 1(a), itsQ computed from Equation (3) is shown below:Q = !0CpR =R!0Lp(3)where Cp and Lp are the capacitance and inductance of the parallelcircuit. From Equations (2) and (3) it can be seen that the capacitanceCp is inversely proportional to the bandwidth and the inductance Lpis proportional to the bandwidth. Bandwidth can be increased usinga larger Lp and a lower Cp. Four representative parallel circuit pairsof Lp and Cp values were simulated using Agilent’s advanced designsystem (ADS). The results are shown in Figure 1(b).In design of the slot antenna, wider apertures tend to increasedinductance and decreased capacitance [13–15]. This is not a desirablesolution for full metal covered smartphone since the appearance wouldbe disrupted.Further increases in bandwidth can be achieved by superpositionof resonances. For a slot antenna this can be achieved by adding amatching circuit in series with Ls and Cs. Figure 2 shows the circuit,the frequency response and S11. To avoid detuning the antenna, theseries circuit should have roughly the same resonant frequency. This118 Zhong et al.response can be inspected using Equation (4).f0 =12ºpLpCpº 12ºpLsCs)pLpCp ºpLsCs (4)For frequencies slightly lower than f0, the parallel one is inductive whilethe series one is capacitive and they compose a new series resonancef0l. For frequencies slightly higher than f0, there will be anotherresonance f0h. Proper adjustment of Ls and Cs can control the spectraldistance between these three diÆerent resonances and when they areclose enough they show a wideband performance that is shown inFigure 2.In Figures 1 and 2, it is 120 ohm rather than a better matching thatis used because a properly bigger resistance than 50 ohm will be helpfulto apply the series LC matching to f0l and f0h. We may explain this intwo reasons: Firstly as the resistance of f0, 120 ohm is good enough toget the return loss better than °6 dB; Secondly resistances of f0l andf0h (Series resonance) are lower than that of f0 (Parallel resonance.Please refer to Figure 2(c)), so properly choosing a bigger resistancefor f0 will make sure that f0l and f0h locate around 50 ohm. For slotantenna designs shown in following sections, the initial resistance off0 can be controlled by appropriately shifting the feed structure alongthe slot [16].(b)(a)(c)Figure 2. PRACTICAL FEEDS FOR A SLOT ANTENNAIn practice, the length and width of the feed will also influence Lswhilst the coupling between the feed and the antenna will alter Cs.If necessary an extra inductor can be used to achieve a larger rangeof Ls. To verify the tuning eÆects of such a feed structure, a simpleslot antenna built on a FR4 board was simulated in CST shown inFigure 3(a). The original design shows the slot is fed by a conventionalT shape feed while the matched design is fed with a smaller feedstructure and an additional series inductor valued 20 nH. A smallerarea of feed structure decreases the coupling between the feed and theantenna, and together with a higher inductor helps to increase thebandwidth. But sometimes we do need an extra inductor to get a desiredLs. The typical values of Ls vary from a few nanohenries to tens ofnanohenries. We should carefully use a big inductor because of itslosses. To match a multiband slot antenna, the values will be furtherrestricted since a big Ls impacts high frequencies much more than lowfrequencies.4. ANTENNA DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION ANDCHARACTERISTICSIn our design, antennas are set at the two ends of a rectangularsmartphone. In Figure 4, the design of the cover with the cellular systemsantenna at the bottom and the GPS/WIFI 2.4GHz combo antenna atthe top is shown. For the main antenna, two slots each are openedsymmetrically to Y -axis for a good appearance. The longer oneworks at GSM850/900, PCS and WCDMA and the shorter one willcover the DCS band. Although wider slots are helpful for enhancingbandwidth, for aesthetic reasons we have made them to be only 1mmwide. Excitation via a strip line with a substrate on the internalside of the back cover can be realised. Alternatively a feed can bemade on the main PCB as is the case for many mobiles. Howeversuch a layout may cause some unpredictable resonances producedby separated back cover and main PCB. Both simulated and measured results show good°6 dB performance of the antenna across all of the specified bands.The measured free space e±ciencies also show the antenna has a goodperformance. The combo antenna also consists of two slots while slot 3is a 1/4 wavelength slot [17, 18]. The feed is set in the same way as forthe main antenna to tune the resonance of the combo. Since both the main andthe combo antennas are using the metal cover as the primary radiationpart, it should be noted that a high isolation is needed to keep antennasworking properly. From the measured S21 results shown in Figure 6 wefound the isolation to be better than °15 dB in all bands. Comparedwith the measurement in free space, hand eÆects drop the S21 to beless than °25 dB due to the power absorption by the hand.Antennas’ free space performance was first measured in an ETSchamber and then the hand eÆects were measured using a CTIA(Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association) certificated handshown in Figure 7(a). This phantom hand can mimic a real hand withsimilar permittivity and loss at diÆerent frequencies. The smartphonewas gripped in a data mode as shown in the Figure 7(a). From themeasured return loss and e±ciency comparisons shown in Figure 7,it can be seen that in common with all typical devices the hand hassignificant impacts on main and WIFI antennas. The tissue losseshave led to a deepened S11 and reduced total e±ciency. GPS antennais relatively stable since it is furthest to the hand. CONCLUSIONSIn this paper, we have presented two novel antennas integrated intothe metal cover of a smartphone. In addition, it was shown howthe slot antenna could be eÆectively matched using a simple tee andmutually coupled line enhanced with an inductor. The enhancedmatching technique allows for improvements in bandwidth. Workingantennas were created for the GSM 850/900, DCS, PCS, WCDMA andGPS/WIFI 2.4GHz bands. Comparisons of the eÆects of proximity ofthe hand on S11, S21, e±ciency and radiation pattern with and withouta phantom hand were also discussed and the results of this showthat in common with typical implementation mobile phone antennase±ciencies do drop sharply when the antenna is being held in thehand. Further work for this research would include the addition ofa thin transparent cover to the phone to increase isolation betweenthe antenna and the hand and a parametric study of bandwidthimprovements as a function of slot width and inductive loading.REFERENCES1.
