テネシー・ウィ藤リアムズの実存的想像力田 秀  樹Tennessee Williams'Existentialヽ「isionHideki FuJITAAbstractTennesseeヽ「ヽi■iams seems tO be close to the existential scho01 0f thOught  He shares withmodern existential thinkers a cO■llnon concern for certain recurring themesi the encOunter、、「ithNothingness, the disruptiOn of everyday normahty and signilicance under the innuence ofanxiety, the a郁/areness of the inevitability and irnminence of death, and alienation  Hiswritings inustrate these various lnOdes of the existential predicament and man's aFRrmatiOn Ofhfe thrOugh the struggle to lind value and meaning in the crisis situationsTennesseeヽアヽilliamsは, CarsOn A/1cCunersの貿夢防肪%S tt α Gοテ″ιη五ぅゼによせた序文1)の中で,McCullersを合めた南部出身の, しかも「病的」なもの,及び“dreadful things"を扱うとしてしばしば読者や批評家から4廼を買 う何人かの作家を「ゴシック派」と呼んでいる。もちろんWilliamsは自分自身をもこの「ゴシック派」に含めていると思われる。彼 も自分の“creative rOOts"は南部にあると考えているし,彼の作品もグPテスクなもの,暴力的なもの,  “crazy people dOing terrible things"ばかりを強調しているという指弾にしばしばさらされてきた。事実この序文の中でも,なぜ「ゴシック派」の作家は“dreadful things"について書 くのかという人々の問いに我々は真剣に答えるべきである, というような言い方をしている。つまりWilliamsはこの序文においてMcCullersについて語 りながら,同時に自分自身の創作原理について解説を行っていると言えなくもない。そしてこの「ゴシック派」とフランスの実存主義作家たちとの間にはひとつの“common昭和62年10月31日受理一般教育講師link"がぁり, それヤよ“a sense,an intuition,Ofan underlying dreadfulness in mOdern experi‐ence"でぁると言っている。このように「ゴシック派」と実存主義作家との感性的共通性を認めたうえで, その “the sense of dreadfulness"を次のように表現する。…・, but the true sense of dread is not areaction tO anything sensible or visible Oreven,  strictly,  materially,  kno、vable.But rather it's a kind Of spiritual intui‐tiOn Of sOmething allnost tOO incredibleand shOcking tO talk about,、1‐hich under‐lies the MπhOle so―caned thing.
