COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course covers topics related to integrated nursing care of individual clients and groups of clients as well as basic principles related to supervision of nursing practice and management of resources. Topics include: Role differentiation among care providers, organization and prioritization, delegation, supervision and appropriate practice, management of the needs of individual and groups of clients, and management of health care resources.  Additionally, the course helps the student integrate didactic content from all other nursing courses and will help the student in his or her transition from the student role to the role of the Registered Nurse. Students examine legal/ethical issues in nursing, values clarification, conflict resolution & consensus building and effective communication techniques in the employment setting. Licensure exam (NCLEX-RN) preparation and process are also included as a component of this course. The preceptor-based clinical component allows the student to function in the role of a registered nurse while working one-on-one with a designated RN preceptor. PROGRAM OUTCOMES: The program outcomes listed in the Student Handbook are formulated to provide students with outcomes expectations in the ASN program. Each objective is considered pertinent to the core competencies for Associate Degree Nursing as described by the National League of Nursing and QSEN. At the completion of this course and the ASN program, the student will be expected to meet the terminal objectives. 2 EXPECTED STUDENT COURSE OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be expected to: 1. Promote a Human Flourishing environment characterized by building a relationship with the patient in an effort to maintain human dignity, self-determination and growth, while meeting the healthcare needs of patient characterized by the student being able to: a. Identify and promote an environment conducive to privacy and safety.  b. Establish a trusting relationship with clients using communication techniques. c. Establish a rapport with other members of the health care team.   2. Understand rationale for Nursing Judgments used in planning and providing safe and effective patient care characterized by the student being able to: a. Demonstrate critical thinking and the utilization of evidence-based research to make clinical decisions. b. Examine health care delivery within a collaborative, ethical and legal framework. c. Apply principles of management leadership utilizing a systematic problem-solving process and critical thinking skills to plan care for clients and their families. d. Apply rational-empirical, normative-reeducative, and power-coercive strategies for effecting change in the healthcare setting. e. Plan for the conservation of material and human resources in managing nursing care for clients.   3. Demonstrate Professional Identity characterized by assessing personal behavior strengths and values affecting one’s identity as a nurse while being responsible for personal actions, performance, and contributions as a member of the health care team, characterized by the student being able to: a. Demonstrate the basic ability to manage a group of clients and/or personnel in the health care setting b. Demonstrate therapeutic communication techniques in the health care setting. c. Integrate knowledge of management principles into the clinical setting.   4. In Spirit of Inquiry, function as a member of multidisciplinary health care team demonstrating the  ability to evaluate self and work ethically with others in a diverse population as characterized by the student being able to: a. Discuss the importance of the nursing process in providing ethical, legal, culturally competent and evidence-based nursing care. b. Integrate clear and complete written and verbal communication with all members of the health care team. c. Integrate knowledge of the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, complications, and treatment modalities to collect and analyze data when coordinating care for clients. NCLEX Review: Standardized testing will be used to monitor student progress and readiness for the NCLEX-RN. Students will be assigned tutorials to prepare for these assessments which will be worth up to 5% of the total grade for the course. Students will earn up to 10% based on their performance and remediation efforts on the ATI Comprehensive Predictor Assessments. This 180-item test offers an assessment of the student’s basic comprehension and mastery of the basic principles including fundamentals of nursing, pharmacology, adult medical-surgical nursing, maternal newborn care, mental health nursing, nursing care of children, nutrition, leadership and community health nursing. The percentage of questions from all major NCLEX client need categories (management of care, safety and infection control, health promotion and maintenance, psychosocial integrity, basic care and comfort, pharmacological therapies and parenteral therapies, reduction of risk potential and physiological adaptation) will be similar to the percentage of questions on the NCLEX-RN. This test will generate the following data: Individual Score (% correct), Predicted Probability to Pass NCLEX-RN, National and Program Means, Individual Scores (% correct) within Content Topic Categories, Topics to Review and Individual Scores (% correct) within an Outcome (Thinking Skills, Nursing Process, Priority Setting, NCLEX-RN Client Need Categories, Clinical Topics).
