We’ve co-sponsored events with the Gund Gallery, Library and Information Services (LBIS), the Natural Sciences Division, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI), Student Accessibility and Support Services (SASS), and the Office of Civil Rights. We also participated in a new faculty development working group designed to better coordinate the efforts of the CIP, the John B. McCoy-Bank One Distinguished Teaching Professor, the Faculty Development Coordinator, and the Provost’s Office.Cooperation with a wide variety of campus partners is key to the CIP’s success. We want to be seen as a resource for creating the opportunities of greatest interest to our faculty. The Kenyon 2020 plan identifies the importance of communal learning in a focused and streamlined way; we hope that these collaborations have helped create that community while resisting the impetus to create yet more competing events. Most importantly, we hope that when the CIP co-sponsors an event, it serves to affirm our shared commitment to outstanding teaching and learning in all parts of campus.Note from the Director— Joseph M. MurphyCollege-Wide OfferingsNeurodiversityThe CIP partnered with Student Accessibility and Support Services on several events related to neurodiversity and universal design for learning. As part of the September celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we co-sponsored a visit by Jonathan Mooney, co-author of Learning Outside the Lines and the founder of Project Eye-to-Eye, a learning disability advocacy organization. Mr. Mooney gave an evening talk that was well attended by students, faculty, staff, and community members, and joined ten faculty and staff for a Common Hour and lunch discussion in the CIP, which moved to the steps of Rosse Hall when we had a fire alarm in the library. (This allowed for a lovely photo.)In October, CIP and SASS brought Dr. Lisa Meeks, the Director of Medical Student Disability Services and an Assistant Professor of Medicine for the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and Dr. Michelle Rigler, Director of Disability Services at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) to talk about the principles of Universal Design for Learning. Their happy hour talk on Embracing Neurodiversity was attended by six faculty and staff, and ten faculty and staff attended their Common Hour and lunch talk on Universal Design for Learning.Erin Salva, Director of Student Accessibility and Support Services, also suggested neurodiversity as a topic for one of our Faculty Learning Communities this year. With Erin’s passion and guidance, this appears to be our most successful faculty learning community, having had the most members meet the most regularly as they read texts like The Power of Neurodiversity and Neurotribes.The CIP partnered with the Gund Gallery to host visits from experts in academic museum education to offer creative approaches to the use of visual objects and exhibitions in courses. Each workshop was offered twice to maximize the opportunities for faculty to attend. On October 7th, Lauren Lessing, Mirken Director of Education at the Colby College Museum of Art spoke on academic museums and object-centered learning. Dr. Lessing presented an example lesson designed to get students to read photographs in fine detail and examine the thematic and editorial choices embedded in them.On November 11th, Jessica Hunter Larsen, Director of the InterDisciplinary Experimental Arts Program at Colorado College, and Carolyn Allmendinger, Director of Academic Programs at the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill spoke on exhibitions as unique teaching tools. Object-Oriented PedagogyBeverly Daniel TatumIn the spring of 2015, the CIP and the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion hosted a highly successful series of book discussions around Can We Talk About Race? by Beverly Daniel Tatum. On February 22nd and 23rd, 2016, we built on that success by hosting a visit from Dr. Tatum. She conducted a faculty/staff workshop attended by thirty-six faculty, staff, and community members, and a public conversation moderated by Associate Provost Ivonne Garcia, which filled the Community Theatre in Gund Gallery and featured exceptionally good student discussion with Dr. Tatum.Diversifying the Curriculum Working GroupThe Provost’s Office, the Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, and the Center for Innovative Pedagogy will sponsor a working group of faculty to examine curricular diversity at Kenyon.  The group of fifteen faculty met once in April to begin to set the parameters for its work in the next academic year. Beginning with brief introductory readings, we will move toward devising a preliminary definition of curricular diversity, one appropriate to Kenyon College. One important goal of the working group will be to spend the first semester of 2016-2017 developing resources for specific ways to diversify courses and the curriculum more generally, and making those resources available to faculty wishing to use them. As part of this working group, we will also offer specific workshops with a diversity focus, including course design.Trigger WarningsMedia coverage and the College’s new Title IX policy led to significant interest in the topic of “trigger warnings” in the fall. We responded by hosting a lunch discussion on the topic with Andrea Goldblum and Linda Smolak, from the Office for Civil Rights, and Patrick Gilligan from the Health and Counseling Center. Ten faculty and staff joined us for a frank discussion which addressed two important aspects of the topic. First, in the liberal arts tradition, we need to “coach up” students who would rather avoid topics which they find uncomfortable or even offensive. We also share a commitment to accommodate students who are struggling with mental health issues in the ways which best support their learning.Collaborations with Library and Information ServicesThe CIP co-sponsored a December 10th LBIS lecture and lunch on copyright and fair use in education. Gretchen McCord, an attorney specializing in copyright and other legal issues related to digital information who is also a librarian, described the principles of fair use in American copyright law and addressed faculty and staff questions. Twenty-four faculty and staff attended.Working with the librarians of the Ohio5 Digital Collaborations Group, LBIS and the CIP co-sponsored a June 6th workshop on Omeka, an online platform designed for curating digital collections and exhibits. Fifteen faculty and staff attended. Jenna Nolt, Digital Initiatives Librarian, and Joe Murphy, Director of the CIP, collaborated on a session in the workshop on digital project planning. We are seeing increasing interest in Omeka as an instructional technology tool across the institutions of the Ohio5, and the workshop piloted at Kenyon will become a “roadshow” which can be delivered at any of the colleges.McCoy Chair Events: Place Based LearningBruce Hardy, Professor of Anthropology and John B. McCoy-Bank One Distinguished Teaching Chair hosted a place-based learning picnic at the Brown Family Environmental Center (BFEC) on October 6th. This fits with one of Bruce’s themes for his tenure as McCoy Chair - developing a sense of place among our students and faculty by engaging classes outside of academic buildings. After talking about his pedagogy in this realm, some twenty faculty members learned to throw spears with atlatls, and make fire using a bow drill. We also engaged in conversation about how outside spaces can spark learning in disciplines as diverse as biology, dance, and philosophy. Getting faculty to come to the BFEC on a beautiful Ohio fall day is easy, so Bruce repeated the event in January in order to emphasize the fact that we don’t have to be ruled by the seasons. Numerous faculty members who attended these events have started to incorporate place-based learning perspectives in their classes.Faculty continue to enjoy our book clubs, which allow them to engage with the scholarship of teaching and learning both as critical researchers and reflective practitioners. Our readings spark engaging, cross-campus discussions in which faculty members swap successful techniques and support each other through challenges. We are finding that summer is a good time for a leisurely exploration of a full book, and that journal articles or book chapters work better during the semester.The CIP hosted a book club on Ken Bain’s What the Best College Teachers Do during June and July 2015. In this classic study, Bain looks at common principles among exemplary teachers from a variety of disciplines and institutions. We read the book in thirds, meeting bi-weekly for lunch and discussion. This easy pace allowed nine faculty members to participate.In June 2016, we hosted a book club on How Learning Works, by Susan Ambrose et al. This book provides a high-level overview of the current psychological research on learning, and provides practical tips for classroom practices which can put that knowledge to use. Again, we met weekly, reading the book in thirds. Eight faculty and staff participated in the book discussions.Working with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, we co-hosted a faculty lunch on chapters 1 and 2 of Culturally Responsive Teaching: Theory, Research, and Practice by Geneva Gay. Eight faculty joined us for a lunch discussion.In Spring 2016, we were approached by Karen Hicks, Associate Professor of Biology, and Kerry Rouhier, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, about supporting a “journal club” on teaching and learning specifically for the Natural Sciences division. These lunch discussions have been quite successful, meeting 3 times in the spring semester with attendance consistently around 15 faculty. We are tremendously pleased to be supporting this interest group and offer the same support for lunch or refreshments to other groups of faculty on campus.Book and Journal ClubsA “writing circle” is a group of faculty members who set a regular time to meet and write. Many faculty members benefit from the social support and accountability for their work. In September, we invited the faculty to join writing circles meeting at the CIP.  While there was a good amount of interest, coordinating schedules proved daunting in many cases. We did have one group form and stay together for the course of the Spring semester. We’re going to offer the opportunity again this coming fall and spring. The CIP remains a venue where faculty can work alone or in groups away from the distractions of office and home.Faculty Writing CirclesThe CIP funds five faculty members per year to attend the Lilly Conference on College Teaching at the University of Miami in Oxford, Ohio, as part of our commitment to increasing Kenyon’s engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning.  Priority is given to faculty presenting at the conference and faculty who have not attended it before.Faculty love this event. The conference takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving, which is an ideal time in our academic calendar for reflection and exploration into the scholarship of teaching and learning. Multiple attendees this year said that they went to the conference in order to get a better idea of what it means to present work on their pedagogy. Attending in a cohort also allows us to build relationships across campus, at the same time the conference is designed to encourage discussions across institutions.On March 22nd, we hosted a lecture and lunch with Lee Zickel, Humanities and Social Sciences Technologist at Case Western Reserve University, on the topic of “Gaming in the Classroom.” Interest in this talk came from our Faculty Learning Community on games in education. Mr. Zickel gave us a wide-ranging survey of different kinds of games, the different ways people approach playing games, and the ways those elements can combine in the classroom to help or hinder particular kinds of learning.
