initial horizontal modulation produced using a multislits mask. The preliminary
experimental data clearly demonstrate the conversion process. To date only the
final energy modulation has been measured. However numerical simulations, in
qualitative agreement with the measurements, indicate that the conversion

In particular, elec-tron bunches with a well-defined temporal distribution areoften desired. An interesting class of temporal distribu-tion consists of train of microbunches with sub-picosecondduration and separation. Applications of such trains of mi-crobunches include the generation of super-radiant radia-tion [1] or the resonant excitation of wakefield in plasmawakefields accelerators or dielectric-loaded structures [2].To date there are very few techniques capable of reliablyproviding this class of beam [3]. We have recently exploredan alternative technique based on the use of a transverse-to-longitudinal phase space exchange method [4, 5]. Themethod consists of shaping the beam’s transverse density toproduce the desired horizontal profile. The horizontal pro-file is then mapped onto the longitudinal profile by a beam-line capable of exchanging the phase space coordinatesbetween the horizontal and longitudinal degrees of free-dom. Therefore the production of a train of microbunchessimply relies on generating a set of horizontally-separatedbeamlets upstream of the beamline. The backbone of theproposed technique is the transverse-to-longitudinal phasespace exchange which was recently proposed as a means tomitigate the microbunching instability in high-brightnesselectron beams [6] or to improve the performance of single-pass FELs [7]. Under the thin lens approximation the ini-tial transverse phase space coordinates (x0, x′0) are mappedto the longitudinal phase space coordinates (z, δ) follow-ing [9] {z = − ξηx0 − Lξ−η2η x′0δ = − 1ηx0 − Lη x′0,(1)where L is the distance between the dogleg’s dipoles, andη and ξ are respectively the horizontal and longitudinal dis-persions generated by one dogleg. The coupling describedby Eq. 1 can used to arbitrarily shape the temporal distri-bution of an electron beam [10].EXPERIMENTAL SETUPThe experiment was carried out at the Fermilab’s A0Photoinjector [11]; see Fig. 1. In brief, electron bunches aregenerated via photoemission from a cesium telluride pho-tocathode located on the back plate of a 1+1/2 cell radio-frequency (rf) cavity operating at 1.3 GHz (the “rf gun”).The rf gun is surrounded by three solenoidal lenses thatcontrol the beam’s transverse size and emittance. The beamis then accelerated in a 1.3 GHz superconducting rf cav-ity (the booster cavity) to approximately 16 MeV. Down-stream of the booster cavity, the beam line includes a set ofquadrupoles, steering dipoles, and diagnostics before split-ting into two lines.The “straight ahead” beamline incorporates anhorizontally-bending spectrometer equipped with ayttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) screen (labeled XS3 inFig. 1) for energy measurement. The horizontal dispersionvalue at XS3 location is |ηx,XS3| = 317 mm.The other beamline, the emittance exchange (EEX)beamline, implements the aforedescribed double-doglegemittance exchanger [12]. The doglegs consist of dipolemagnets with ±22.5◦ bending angles and each generate ahorizontal and longitudinal dispersions of η ' −33 cmand ξ ' −12 cm, respectively 1. The deflecting cavityis a liquid-Nitrogen–cooled, normal-conducting, five-cellcavity operating on the TM110 pi-mode at 3.9 GHz [13].1In our convention the head of the bunch is for z < 0.FERMILAB-CONF-10-051-APCFigure 1: Top view of the A0 photoinjector showing elements pertinent to the present experiment. The spectrometer downstream of the emittance exchange beamline bends the beam in thevertical direction.The lattice downstream of the EEX beamline includes threequadrupoles, a suite of standard beam diagnostics and avertical spectrometer. At X24, the total power emitted viacoherent transition radiation (CTR) as the beam impingesan Aluminum screen can be measured using a pyroelec-tric detector. Such a measurement can be used to minimizethe bunch length at X24 by maximizing the radiated power.The vertical dispersion generated by the spectrometer at theXS4 YAG screen is |ηy,XS4| = 944 mm. This multislit mask, nominally designed for single-shot transverse emittance measurements, consists of 50 µmwide slits made out of a 3 mm thick tungsten plate. Theslits are separated by 1 mm. Less than 5 % of the incomingbeam is transmitted through the mask. This mask is obvi-ously not optimized for the present experiment: a smallerslits spacing would be more beneficial to increase the totaltransmitted charge and to get a smaller separation betweenthe bunches after the EEX beamline.The beam was first diagnosed in the straight-ahead lineand the spectrometer to ensure especially that no energymodulation was observable. The resulting set of observa-tions is depicted in Fig. 2.The beam was then transported through the EEX beam-line with the deflecting cavity turned off. The transversemodulation was still observable at X24 but no energy mod-ulation could be seen at XS4. Powering the cavity to itsnominal deflecting voltage (Vx ' 290 kV) resulted in thesuppression of the transverse modulation at X24 and theappearance of an energy modulation at XS4; see Fig. 3and Fig. 4. These observations clearly demonstrate theability of the EEX beamline to convert an incoming trans-verse density modulation into an energy modulation. Inthe present measurement the incoming horizontal Courant-Snyder (CS) parameters at the EEX beamline entrancewere empirically tuned to maximize the energy modula-tion. However other C-S parameters settings can map theinitial modulation into a temporal modulation as can be in-ferred from Eq. 1.NUMERICAL SIMULATIONSStart-to-end simulations were performed in order to pro-vide insight on the experimental results. The programASTRA [14] was used to model the beam dynamics fromthe cathode to X3. Space charge effects are not expected to be sig-nificant in driving the evolution of the beamlet dynam-ics as can be inferred by estimating the ratio of the spacecharge and emittance terms in the envelope equation R =Iˆ/[3√2piIAγ](w/εx)2 where Iˆ ' 32 A is the peak cur-rent (we take the temporal distribution to be Gaussian withrms duration σt = 4.5 ps), γ is the beam’s Lorentz fac-tor, w = 50 µm is the slits width, and IA = 17 kA isthe Alfe`n current. The vertical axis yis proportional to the fractional momentum spread.foundR ' 8×10−3  1 supporting the use of ELEGANT.The accelerator settings gathered in Table 1 were usedin ASTRA and ELEGANT as a starting point for our simu-lations. In ELEGANT the settings of quadrupoles Q1, Q2,Q3 and Q4 were altered per the operating procedure fol-lowed during the experiment. First, the quadrupoles werescanned to minimize the final bunch length and energyspread without inserting X3 slits. The quadrupoles werethen empirically tuned to maximize the energy separationof the beamlet on XS4. The resulting images at X24 andXS4 with deflecting cavity on and off are shown in Fig. 5.Although there is a qualitative agreement between simu-lations and measurements, further improvement of the nu-merical model is needed before confidently benchmarkingsimulations and experiments.The corresponding longitudinal phase space downstreamof the EEX beamline is shown in Fig. 6. The phase spaceis significantly correlated and therefore has both an energyand temporal modulations.The spectral intensity radiated by a bunch ofN electronsby the CTR process is related to the single electron inten-sity dIdω∣∣1via dIdω∣∣N= dIdω∣∣1[N + N2|S(ω)|2] where S(ω)is the intensity-normalized Fourier transform of the nor-malized charge distribution S(t) [16]. Considering a seriesof Nb identical microbunches with normalized distributionΛ(t) we have S(t) = N−1b∑Nbn=1 Λ(t + nT ) (where T isthe period) giving |S(ω)|2 = Ξ|Λ(ω)|2. The intra-bunchcoherence factor Ξ = N−2b sin2(ωNbT/2)/[sin2(ωT/2)]describes the enhancement of radiation emission at res-onance, i.e. for frequencies ωn = 2pin/T . The com-puted bunch form factors (BFFs) |S(ω)|2 from the simu-lated macroparticle ensemble are shown in Fig. 6 for thecase of the entire bunch, i.e. without slits X3 inserted, (bluesolid trace) and for the case corresponding to image (a) ofFig. 6 (red dash trace). In images (c) and (d) the verticalaxis y is proportional to the fractional momentum spread.SUMMARY AND OUTLOOKIn summary we have shown that an incoming transversemodulation could be converted into the longitudinal phasespace using the EEX beamline. In the preliminary set ofexperimental results reported in this paper, the accelera-tor parameters were empirically chosen to obtain a clearenergy modulation. The data are qualitatively consistentwith single-particle tracking which indicate that a tem-poral modulation is also present due to the strongly cor-related longitudinal phase space. In the near future weplan on demonstrating that the technique can produce atrain of sub-picosecond microbunches by directly measur-ing the temporal distribution. The train of microbuncheswill be characterized via autocorrelation of the CTR radi-ation emitted at X24. Because of the low bunch charge(Q ' 10 − 15 pC after the X3 slits) a Helium-cooledbolometer will be used to detect CTR.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSWe are indebted to W. Muranyi, J. Santucci, and B.
