This contributes toincreased use of privately owned vehicle (POV) and it adds to pollution andcongestion. The fig.1 shows a comparison of travel characteristics of USAand UK and the figure highlights the congestion issues faced by latercountry. A rechargeable battery will supply powerto motor via power electronic converter. The power from motor will betransferred to wheels either directly or via transmission, usually a singlespeed. The motor controllers can be configured to include regenerativebreaking; thus extending the range of LETW.Fig.2. The layout of  LETWPresent challenges and future of LETWEducating the masses about the new developments in LETW and clearingthe misconception about the range is a major challenge. Development oflow cost powertrain will help in bringing down the cost of ownership ofLETW compared to IC engine powered counterpart. The price of Li-ionbattery is expected to fall as this decade progresses; this along with zeroemission cities expected to come around the world in next decade offershuge potential for wider adoption of LETW.Fig.1.
