Stone and Philip J. SterlingArkansas Geological CommissionABSTRACTIgneous rock is exposed on less than 0.05% of the surfacearea of Arkansas. This, however, is no measure of the im-portance of igneous activity to the origin of ore deposits in thestate. The alkalic to ultrabasic intrusives of the OuachitaMountain areas can be attributed as the source of the bauxitein central Arkansas, the barite near Magnet Cove and thediamond-bearing volcanic neck near Murfreesboro in south-western Arkansas. These bodies, of probable mid-Cretaceousage, characteristically have a relatively high content of iron,titanium, columbium and vanadium, especially in the MagnetCove region. Deeper bodies of similar character have been en-countered in holes drilled in southeastern Arkansas.Certain nickel-bearing serpentine and talc bodies of centralArkansas have been described as being derived from igneousbodies of Paleozoic age. Granite and ryholite of probable Pre-cambrian age have been encountered by deep drillingin north-western Arkansas, and more recently reported at depth in west-central Arkansas near Fort Smith.Since the Mesozoic and Paleozoic igneous activity of thestate is closely connected to or immediately responsible formuch of the known occurrence of metallic minerals in Arkan-sas, itis logical to examine this background in looking for newmineral deposits.54Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science, Vol. 17 [1963], Art. 11Published by Arkansas Academy of Science, 1963
