From his zvork he has preparedthis article to show activities of other Engineer-ing Colleges of the nation.This is the first of a series of articles presentingnews from other engineering schools throughout thecountry.National defense summer training for non-collegestudents is not limited to the campus of the OhioState University; nearly all of the larger engineeringschools are offering training of one kind or another.For example, the College of Engineering at the Uni-versity of Wisconsin recently inaugurated a summercourse in mechanical drawing, shop work, and shopmathematics. Thirty-eight high-school graduates pur-sued the rigorous training last summer at a cost tothem of only $6.00 per student. Drawing instrumentswere loaned to the students, and all machine shopequipment was placed at the disposal of the studentsat no further cost to them. A special course in hand-ling of explosives, similar to the course taught hereat Ohio State, is being sponsored by the Illinois Insti-tute of Technology. The first section of more than60 students was taught by the chief chemist of a largeindustrial concern. Incidentally, students completingthe explosives course here at Ohio State have steppedinto some very fine positions.Mechanical Engineers at New York University whohave a scholastic rating of "B" or better, and a seniorstanding, will have an opportunity to take a Marineoption in their course this year. There is a growingdemand for men competent in the design of ship pro-pulsion machinery and deck gear, and this course aimsto give the student just such training.The Department of Civil Engineering at the Uni-versity of Missouri has greatly expanded the scopeof its work in the field of sanitary engineering. In• 1939, a fully equipped mobile trailer was obtained tofacilitate research work throughout the entire state.The traveling laboratory contains refrigeration andsterilization equipment, microscope, Imhoff cones,and other essential laboratory apparatus for takingand analyzing samples in the field. The Civil Engi-neering Department now has a completely new, fullyequipped, laboratory on the campus. One of the fea-tures of the sanitary engineering work at Missouri isthe cooperative arrangement established with theKellogg Foundation. Each summer several studentsare sent to Michigan with fellowships in public healthengineering, to work on water supply and sewageproblems, resort sanitation and various other prob-lems, all under the direct supervision of the variouscounty health departments. Close cooperation withthe State Board of Health has helped to bring aboutthis expansion in the field of sanitary engineeringeducation at Missouri.A recent study of the "Cooperative Engineer", pub-lication of the University of Cincinnati, revealed thatchemical engineering students had contributed morearticles in the past 79 issues than any other singlegroup. Electricals, Civils, faculty, and mechanicalsfollowed in that order. The "Cooperative Engineer"recently closed its twentieth year of publication onthe U. C. campus.Dr. L. K. Arnold of the Chemical EngineeringDepartment of Iowa State College has recently an-nounced the development of a new process for theextraction of oil from the soy bean. The beans arefirst flaked and then brought in contact with a flowof trichloroethylene which is subsequently evaporatedleaving the extracted oil. Loss of the solvent is mini-mized by the use of proper condensation equipment.Since trichloroethylene is non-explosive it is superiorto the hexane which was formerly used. The newprocess is said to be capable of efficient operationon as little as 5 to 25 tons per day. This would makeextraction in the smaller mills and grain elevators areality.Page 12 THE OHIO STATE ENGINEER
