Hatcher                     Office:  AD304C Asbury Theological Seminary                        Phone:  858-2023  Course Description Participants in this first of a two-part course (6 credit hours) will be introduced to New Testament (Koine) Greek.  Particular emphasis is placed on the mastery of the rudiments of Greek grammar, vocabulary and syntax for the purpose of reading the Greek New Testament.  Course Objectives After the successful completion of this course the student will:  (1) Possess a working vocabulary of most words that occur 50 times or more in the GNT,  (2) Be able to parse nouns and verbs used 50 times or more in the GNT,  (3) Be able to understand Greek phonology, morphology (which is the study and description of word formation including inflection, derivation, and compounding), and syntax (word order, thought flow, and sentence structure),  (4) Be equipped to translate passages from the GNT,  (5) Be able to identify and label selected syntactical relationships between words,  (6) Possess a rudimentary knowledge of Greek tools, resources and linguistics in so far as these impinge upon the study of the New Testament.  Course Requirements (1) Class Preparation, Attendance, and Participation:   As with any language course, regular attendance and full participation in this course is imperative.  Students should expect to spend 6-9 hours a week beyond class time.  Students will learn Greek grammar and vocabulary most effectively through daily study and constant review.  (2)  Exercises & Worksheets:  Students will receive the opportunity to practice and develop their Greek skills through practice exercises in the textbook and worksheet handouts.  They will be collected and recorded weekly.  10%  (3)  Quizzes:  Each student is responsible for learning all the Greek words that occur 50 times or more in the New Testament.  These words correspond to the vocabulary lists found in Black.  Students will take vocabulary and grammar quizzes periodically throughout the term.   15%  (4)  Examinations:  Students will receive the opportunity to display their growing skills with the Greek language through two examinations.  The exams will test students on points of grammar, the parsing of verbs, the identification of grammatical constructions, and translation.  Midterm    25%  Final       50%  Class Policies and Suggestions (1) Late Work:  Normally students must turn in assignments and take quizzes/tests on the dates specified.  If for some reason this is impossible, students must notify the instructor in advance.  (2) Questions:  In language study it is normal for students to have gaps in their understanding of new material.  Please ask questions when you do not understand some feature we are studying.  Usually many other students have the same question.  (3)  Group Study:  Language is retained and clarified through use and interaction.  Feel free to study with other students and help each other with the exercises.  However, be careful to not become dependent on other students.  Required Texts Black, David Alan.
