 01.11.2010, Sebastian Albrecht, FIELAX Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH 1 MSM 16/2 processing log Sediment echosounder data (Atlas Parasound) a) Surveys The objective of all Parasound surveys during this cruise was the detection and mapping of gas flares in the Håkon Mosby Mud Volcano area. Therefore 20 fixed parallel survey profiles were arranged in the area with a line spacing of ~70 m in east-west direction. All profile names in the further data and data processing correspond with these profiles, also shown in the following map figure 1.   Figure 1: Planned survey profiles for gas flare survey   The following Atlas Parasound surveys have been performed during this cruise. All surveys were run with a vessel speed of ~1 knot. No further navigation processing was made. The ASD, PS3 and SGY files are published as TAR archives each containing the data for one survey profile.  d) Data visualization with SeNT SeNT (Se suite for Windows NT, from Universität Bremen, Hanno Keil) was used to create plots of the Parasound PS3 data. The data of each survey and each frequency (PHF, SLF) was plotted by distance (100 m per cm) and saved as PNG image file. See example plots below. A file structure of several “ANTXX” directories was given which contained PS3 files indicating a raw copy of original Parasound tapes.  b) Processing  • Sorting:  Resulting PS3 files were archived 4-hour-wise in TAR archives. • Meta navigation table for PANGAEA:  A navigation table was created using a 10 minute interval navigation extracted from the DShip 10-minute-database (dship.awi.de). Afterwards all TAR archives were referenced to the navigation table accordingly. Navigation rows without references to TAR archives were removed.  Some PS3 files contain wrong date/time headers and wrong latitude/longitude values. A file structure of several “CDXX” directories was given which contained pre-sorted folders for track/seismic profile, corrupt and zero data PS3 files.   b) Processing  • Sorting:  The pre-sorted PS3 data directories with given track or seismic profile names were used as the basis for creating TAR archives.  • Meta navigation table for PANGAEA:  A navigation table was created using a 10 minute interval navigation extracted from the DShip 10-minute-database (dship.awi.de). All TAR archives were referenced to the navigation table accordingly.  Some PS3 files contain wrong date/time headers and wrong latitude/longitude values. Their correction was not covered by this processing.  c) Statistics  Data volume:    14 GB  Total number of files checked:  5897 Total number of headers checked:  1055926 Total number of files with invalid date/time: 71 ( 1.20 percent ) Total number of invalid date/time headers: 179 ( 0.02 percent ) Total number of files with wrong lat/long: 2133 ( 36.17 percent ) Total number of wrong lat/long A file structure of several “TXX” directories was given which contained PS3 files indicating a raw copy of Parasound tapes.  b) Processing  • Sorting:  Resulting PS3 files were archived 4-hour-wise in TAR archives. • Meta navigation table for PANGAEA:  A navigation table was created using a 10 minute interval navigation extracted from the DShip 10-minute-database (dship.awi.de). Due to missing navigation data from DShip in the time 28.12.1993 00:10 until 01.01.1994 00:00 navigation data from PS3 headers was used instead. Afterwards all TAR archives were referenced to the navigation table accordingly. Navigation rows without references to TAR archives were removed.  Some PS3 files contain wrong date/time headers and wrong latitude/longitude values.    28.06.2011, Sebastian Albrecht, FIELAX Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH 1 ARK-XVI/2 processing log  a) Original data  Original Parasound data were held on hard disk drive. A file structure of several “TapeXX” directories was given which contained PS3 files.   b) Processing  • Renaming:  PS3 files from tape directories were moved to one folder. Thereby wrong PS3 file names which were given by the data acquisition software during date changes were corrected manually. • Corrupted files:  PS3 files from 08041052.ps3 to 08041422.ps3 (74 in total, 97 MB) are corrupt and therefore removed. • Year 2000 and leap year problem:  Year values in all headers from each PS3 files have been changed from 1900 to 00. Otherwise programs like SeNT would not be able to read the PS3 file. Due to a leap year problem of Parasound’s data acquisition software all PS3 files from year 2000 which were recorded after February, 28th have a wrong date (1 day further than true). All PS3 files and all contained headers were corrected. • Sorting:  Resulting PS3 files were archived 4-hour-wise in TAR archives. • Meta navigation table for PANGAEA:  A navigation table was created using a 10 minute interval navigation extracted from the DShip 10-minute-database (dship.awi.de). Due to missing navigation data from DShip in the time 19.08.2011 11:10-15:10 navigation data from PS3 headers was used instead.  Afterwards all TAR archives were referenced to the navigation table accordingly. Navigation rows without references to TAR archives were removed.  Some PS3 files contain wrong date/time headers and wrong latitude/longitude values.
