[Resumen] El comportamiento constructor es un rasgo característico de las larvas de tricópteros (Insecta: Trichoptera), grupo abundante y muy diverso en medios de agua dulce. En esta revisión se profundiza en distintos aspectos relacionados con la construcción de estuches, desde los tipos de materiales utilizados hasta los factores que afectan a este comportamiento. Por otra parte, la seda producida por los tricópteros, que utilizan tanto para la construcción de los estuches como de refugios menos elaborados o redes para la captura de alimento, presenta un cierto número de características distintivas. Por este motivo, se revisa el estado de conocimiento sobre su composición y características estructurales, que las diferencian de la producida por otros invertebrados, así como también posibles usos en el ámbito de la salud. Por último, se revisa brevemente como el comportamiento constructor se puede utilizar como marcador de contaminación.[Abstract] The case construction behaviour is a characteristic feature of caddisfly larvae (Insecta: Trichoptera), an abundant and highly diverse group in fresh water ecosystems. This review will emphasize different aspects involved in the construction of cases, from types of materials used to factors that have an influence on this behaviour. Another distinctive feature of this group is that they produce silk, which is used to build cases, simple shelters, or even food filtering nets. Thus, the present knowledge on the composition of the silks and the structural differences to silk produced by other invertebrates is investigated, as well as their potential uses in the health sector.
