The	  3rd	  International	  Forum	  	  on	  Water	  and	  Food	  Tshwane,	  South	  Africa	  November	  14	  –	  17, 2011	  	   	   	  	  	  Co-­‐hosted	  by:	  	  	   	  R e t h i n k i n g  w a t e r  m a n a g e m e n t  i n  t h e  V o l t a  B a s i n   SIDI	  COULIBALY1	  AND	  MAHAMOUDOU	  SAWADOGO2	  	  1GWP/West	  Africa	  2VBA/CPWF	  ouedr@yahoo.com	  	  	  Session:  African Session 	  	  	     S u m m a r y  This	  piece	  of	  writing	  will	  provide	  arguments	  for	  an	  equitable	  management	  of	  water	  resources.	  The	  story	   (ies)	  will	   highlight	   the	  population’s	   needs	   and	   the	   resources	   around	   the	  basin	   and	  how	   tapping	  them	  can	  be	  useful	  to	  alleviating	  poverty.	  If	  properly	  disseminated,	  the	  study	  can	  contribute	  to	  raising	  public	  awareness	  on	  the	  protection	  of	  water	  resources	  and	  ecosystems	  which	  are	  already	  threatened	  by	  “anarchic”	  exploitation	  of	  resources	  in	  the	  basin.	  The	  lessons	  carried	  by	  the	  story	  and	  all	  	  information	  it	  is	  based	  upon	  can	  be	  of	  relevance	  to	  other	  basins	  as	  in	  most	  places	  water	  reservoirs	  (dams)	  are	  built	  for	  electricity	  while	  agricultural	  and	  other	  human	  related	  aspects	  remain	  largely	  neglected	  or	  are	  given	  little	  attention.	   Small	  water	   reservoirs	   are	  generally	  meant	   for	  multiple	  uses	  but	   their	  use	   still	   poses	   some	  problems	  of	  management	  that	  need	  to	  be	  addressed. Key Message Steady	  population	  growth	  and	  climate	  change	  are	  currently	  threatening	  	  the	  ecosystems	  and	  	  livelihoods	  of	  people	  living	  in	  the	  Volta	  Basin.	  Evidenced-­‐based	  investment	  in	  rainwater	  and	  small	  reservoirs	  management	  could	  improve	  the	  	  lives	  of	  millions	  of	  people	  in	  the	  Volta	  Basin.
