Energy deprivation induces a specific secretome in skeletal muscle.

Abstract

Skeletal muscle is an important player in whole body energy homeostasis due to its high energy turnover. However, it also appears to be an endocrine organ. In this study, muscle cells were deprived of nutrient energy in vitro. The induced secretome was analyzed by mass spectrometry and bioinformatically examined to reveal potential novel hormones, so-called myokines. In pilot experiments, the biological activity of a subset of candidate proteins was examined in different types of cells
