Alumni NotesPlenty of numbers surroundScott Carnahan ’73 as he retires asLinfield College head baseball coachthis year.Among them: 1,174 gamescoached, 727 games won, more than500 players mentored. But one number is more mean-ingful than the rest to Carnahan –98. That’s the percentage of Linfieldvarsity baseball players he coachedwho completed bachelor’s degrees. Carnahan, who will remain asLinfield’s athletic director, has spentthe past 24 years molding studentsfirst and athletes second, following inthe footsteps of Linfield coachinglegends such as Roy Helser ’36, AdRutschman ’54, Paul Durham ’36and Ted Wilson.“It’s something we’ve tried topass on,” Carnahan said. “It is impor-tant students get the educationalexperiences to be successful in what-ever their career endeavor is after col-lege. Not only the lessons they learnin the classroom, but also the success-related skills and lessons they learnthrough participation in athletics.”Carnahan learned that philoso-phy as a student after being recruitedto Linfield by Rutschman to playfootball and Helser to play baseball.He earned a teaching degree andmarried Cathy (Wark) ’73.  After asix-year stint coaching baseball atLower Columbia CommunityCollege, Carnahan returned toLinfield as a member of the facultyand head baseball coach. He wasnamed director of athletics in 1996.Under his leadership as athleticdirector, Linfield has been awardedthe McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports Trophythree times, honoring the top overallathletics program in the NWC. Hehas overseen major upgrades to ath-letic facilities, including the 2004$1.4 million renovation of the run-ning track and football field.During his tenure as baseballcoach, Carnahan’s teams have won11 Northwest Conference champi-onships – five straight between 1992and 1996 – and finished second onsix other occasions. He has beennamed NWC Coach of the Year 11times and NAIA District 2 Coach ofthe Year three times. Over the years, Carnahan haspassed along his own attention todetail and commitment to excel-lence, continually reminding playersthat “everything counts.”“We go into each game with anunderlying confidence, expecting towin,” he said. “We play without fearof making mistakes or losing. If weplay our best on the field, we’ll putourselves in a position to be success-ful. We won’t have any regrets.”Players have been touched by hispassion, including Jon Searle ’03,who applies many of the lessons helearned as an outfielder to his cur-rent position at Nike.“I feel lucky to have had theopportunity to be a part of the richtradition of Linfield athletics,” hesaid. “Carnahan taught me simplelessons like teamwork, leadership,time management, sportsmanship,patience, confidence and, mostimportantly, family.”Standout moments on and offthe baseball diamond pale com-pared to the relationships Carnahanhas made.“The wins and losses all kind ofrun together,” he said. “But theconnections I’ve had with my play-ers are the most memorable.”Scott Brosius ’02, who will suc-ceed Carnahan as head coach, attrib-utes much of his own success toCarnahan. Brosius won three WorldSeries titles with the New YorkYankees in 1998, 1999 and 2000 andwas named the Most Valuable Playerof the 1998 World Series.“Carney’s had a huge impact onmy development as a player, a personand now a coach,” Brosius said. “He’sbuilt a program that has carried onwhat Linfield athletics is all about –the pursuit of excellence, both onand off the field. He willremain as athletic director.2 4   -   L I N F I E L D  M A G A Z I N EScholarship fund builds a legacyChelsea Machida ’11 knows a thing ortwo about achievement.Machida, the daughter of Keith and MaryMachida, both ’86, holds Hawaiian state titlesin both the high jump and 1-meter dive andplans to compete in track and field when shearrives at Linfield in the fall. Now Machida can add one moreachievement to her list. She and five otherstudents with family ties to Linfield willreceive scholarship assistance thanks to theLinfield Alumni Association.The Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, administered by theAlumni Leadership Council, provides financial aid to the children,grandchildren or siblings of alumni. It is the only fund specifically tar-geted to support legacy students. The fund’s growth depends onannual giving by Linfield alumni and friends.  The application dead-line for 2008-09 awards is Feb. 1, 2008.
