GIS mapping for the Temporal Variation of Coastal Pollution induced by Hebei Spirit Oil Spill

Abstract

Coastline around Taean in Korea was polluted heavily due to the 'Hebei Spirit' oil spill accident in December 7, 2007. To understand these oiling status, pollution thematic maps were made by using pollution status assessment data and GIS techniques. Using 6 IKONOS satellite images and 3 digital charts GIS basemap was established, and then 195 spatial units were defined using classified coastline types(sand, bedrock, gravel, artificial coastal, mud)(Figure 1).To know the representative parameters which reflect oiling situation, relationship analysis was conducted between oiling parameters extracted from four times oiling assessment reports by Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM), Korea Ocean Environment Management (KOEM), Korea Coast Guard (KCG) from December 2007 to January 2008 and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) data (December 2007 and January 2008) monitored by Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (KORDI). According to this result, the pollution value multiplying length of pollution zone by pollution degree reflected oiling status very well. After calculated pollution values were keyed into each coastline data, oiling status were classified as five classes using normalized stand score(Z-score). Therefore, four kinds of coastal pollution thematic maps could be made like as Figure 2.1
