Responsive Philanthropy in Mumbai: Corporate Sector and Social Justice Philanthropy

Abstract

The authors use the framework for social justice philanthropy as elaborated in the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy of America in April 2003 to study the role of four funding organisations. The emphasis of the study was to understand the vision and objectives of the organization. That is, does the organization have an issue-based focus or a group-based focus? Within the issue-based focus was there a particular target-group focus? An attempt was also made to understand how the funding organisation develops the networks with the NGOs and selects its partner for carrying out the projects and the disbursement of the funds. In short: How does funding reach the beneficiaries?social justice philanthropy, responsive philanthropy, funding, issue-based funding, Sociology
