Efforts in support of a global backscatter mission are reviewed briefly. Lidar system sensitivity was calibrated by means of ground-based tests. The analysis of ground-based data and planning of a global backscatter mission were conducted. Proposals for FY-85 include using a more powerful laser to conduct backscatter measurements

We expect t o  have from the f a l l  1984 f l i g h t s  some quick-look publ icat ions on 
backscat ter  d i s t r i b u t i o n  before the s t a r t  of the s p r i n g  1985 fl ights.  
Following the f l i g h t s  there wil l  be data  evaluat ion,  quick-look science,  
and the s t a r t i n g  of s c i e n t i f i c  ana lys i s  of the da ta .  
The global backscat ter  mission will be planned. Cooperation between 
the various NASA centers  will be arranged. We wil l  inves t iga te  the 
p o s s i b i l i t y  of cooperating w i t h  another center  t o  get a more powerful 
l a s e r  t o  make backscat ter  measurements, upon completion of the 85 
fl i g h t  program. 
Recommendati ons f o r  new research: 
S a t e l l i t e  Doppler l i d a r  should be s t a r t e d  on i t s  way by making a global 
backscat ter  assessment , by design s tudies  , and by performance s tudies .
