Cold War Pastoral/SSSI Greenham Common

Abstract

During a year long residency, photographer Jhon Kippin documented the changing landscape of Greenham common, notorious during the Cold War and the scene of a unique peace protest throughout the 1980s and 90s. This project marks the change of use of the site from a military base common land, with essays examining the history of the Common, the development of the Womens' Peace Movement and the protest at Greenham. The essays place both the events at Greenham Common and Kippin's critical practice in a wider social and political context. Included is an account by one of the longest serving peace protesters, Sarah Hipperson
