Some of these are tobroaden our scope of scientific informationand to help us better serve our commun-ities.The basis on which good relations withthe other healing arts professions de-pends, must include contacts with themthrough individual members in the com-munity, through local organizations,through state organizations and throughnational organizations.In many instances veterinarians havedeveloped excellent relationships in theircommunities through personal contact;but in most cases no effort has been ex-erted to try to bring about meetings in thecommunities, or the states for that matter,with repersentatives from the differentl1ealing arts professions participating.We in veteril1.ary medicine should beactive in stimulating these meetings andalso interprofessional organiaztions be-cause as a profession directly and indi-rectly related to the other healing arts pro-fessions, veterinary medicine quite oftenis a key group to bring about professionalharmony and socialbility. Veterinary med-icine can readily approach the other pro-fessions regarding the establishment ofinterprofessional associatiol~S and throughthe veterinarian's excellent training in allphases of health sciences, he can discussscientific information with any medicalor allied professional group and thus stim-ulate better relations with other profess-ions.Dr. C. Thisoutline could be changed to meet eitherlocal or national needs:a. Find out if each of the health pro-fessions have an interprofessional com-mittee. If not, why not.b. Have the council representative bell1embers of each state association's in-terprofessional committee.c. Make membership on the council bystate association, with four or fiveI NTER'PRO'FESSIONALCOUNCILFIVE DELEGATES FROMEACH '0 F THEABOVEEXAMININGBOARD13representatives (we have five) from€ach profession that are empowered tospeak for their entire association.d. Each state association should payequal annual dues to finance the coun-cil activities.e. The council should have an execu-tive board, preferably composed of thecouncil's officers and the chairmen ofeach profession's interprofessional com-mittee.f. Officers should be set up so thateach profession has one officer eachyear (in Illionis, officers move up eachyear, therefore assuring the presidencyof the council to each of the professionsin turn.)g. Encourage membership in the coun-cil of men who have been very active intheir own state and national associ-ations.In Illinois the above basic outline wasurged in organizing the Illinois Interpro-fessional Council and here is the way thecouncil was organized and is functioningto date:Once a council has been established, itis important that each profession repre-sented use it to the best advantage. Ofcourse, the items brought before the coun-cil by each group will vary in nature and,to give some idea of veterinary medicine'sparticipation, followillg is an outli11e ofsome of the topics pertaining to veterinarymedicine that have been discussed orbrought before the council:1. Rabies - as you know a few yearsago the Chicago area had a rabies out-break. This was discussed by the councilwith pertinent information passed on tothe various professional organizations,particularly medicine.2. Sales of pharmaceuticals and bio-logicals directly to the laity - This hasbeen discussed in open council, as well asindividually, with the pharmaceuticalrepresentatives on the council. This natu-rally is a problem that will not be challgedovernight, but in time much can be doneto correct this situation. It nlight be addedthat the other professions on the council,excluding pharmacy, were not cognizantof the amount of lay sales of medicationsfor animals.143. State board examining committee -From time to time, each of the professionshas experienced difficulty in having thebest qualified men serve on the state ex-aming committee. The interprofessionalcouncil has established a policy of sup-porting qualified men, submitted for ap-proval by each profession.Illinois had a problem of a member ofthe Illinois veterinary medical examiningcommittee that was not a men1ber ofeither the American Veterinary MedicalAssociation or the Illinois State VeterinaryMedical Association. The illterprofessionalCouncil showed a very active interest inthis problem and the situation has beellcorrected. Now all members of our vet-erinary examining committee are mem-bers, in good standing, of both the AVMAand tIle ISVMA.4. Professional ethics - Each of theprofessions on the council submitted theircode of ethics to the council for evaluationas an aid in strengthening professionalactivity. This has been valuable to all ofthe professions among their own members,as well as ill the long rUll become a valu-able aid to the high standards of profes-sional services for the people of Illinois.5. Legislative liaison - Each of theprofessions on the council maintain legis-lative contacts, however, by each profes-sion keeping in close contact with each ofthe profession's legislative activity it hashelped tremendously in the overall activityof each of our professions.6. Interprofessional relations in localcommunities - We have found in Illinoisthat much good can come from the differ-ent professions knowi:p.g the local profes-sional members of the other health pro-fessions 011 a professional and social basis.This has been encouraged and we havereceived a number of comments about thistype of relationship, in that consultationand community health problems are mucheasier to deal with when there is harmonybetween the different professions.7. Participation in panel discussions atstate and national meetings - Each ofthe professions have been represented atstate and 11atiollal meetings at conven-tions of all the associations represented onthe council. Until such time as a coordinatedeffort of this nature and scope is accom-plished, the problem presented by the"orphan viruses" as well as by the newerviruses of pathogenic disease producingpotential, will continue to grow.SummaryIt appears that the main challenge tothe virologist today is not the conquest ofviruses that produced the plagues of old asthese viruses have long been recognizedand measures developed against them.It appears that the day is gone whennew pandemic-producing viruses are likelyto make their appearance.
