The body is elongate, laterallycompressed and gradually tapering to caudal. Lastsoft ray of dorsal and anal fins connected to caudalfin by a membrane. Scales cycloid, small, presenton head and opercle. Eyes red, large and protractile.Mouth large, oblique; upper jaw broad at end, withoutsupramaxilla, and extending to below posteriormargin of eye with triangular tongue. Mouth has asingle row of slender, slightly curved teeth in jawsand  median palatine teeth. Preopercle bluntlyserrated. Gill openings wide and semicircular. A singlelong dorsal fin originates on head. Dorsal and analfins join with the caudal. Colour of the body red withgolden yellow bands on sides. The species is distinguishedby the presence of one small black spot, slightlygreater than pupil diameter, in the middle of themembrane between the seventh and eighth dorsal-finsoft rays; dorsal profile of snout curved, initiallyconvex, then deeply concave; interorbital spacedeep, occipital pit moderately deep; 16 pectoral-finrays, with the distal margins of the spinous portionof the dorsal fin and soft-rayed portions of the dorsal,pelvic, anal and caudal fins very weakly notched,membrane of the spinous portion of the dorsal finnotably fleshy, tips of each caudal-fin ray divided intofour branches and dorsal-fin spines relatively soft withtips bending easily under slight pressure. Thisspecies is reported earlier from Australia, Indonesia,Japan, Mauritius, Philippines, Reunion, Seychellesand Vietnam.  The synonyms of this species areRhinopias eschemeyeri and R. frondosa.Marine litter in the coastal environment of MangaloreBindu Sulochanan, G. Subramanya Bhat and S. LavanyaMangalore Research Centre of CMFRI, MangaloreThe continuous flow of large quantities of plasticsand waste from land and sea based sources resultin a gradual build up of litter in the marine and coastalenvironment. Plastics and other man-made objectscause serious impacts on environment, economics,safety and health. Worldwide, millions of marinemammals, birds, turtle and fish perish as a result ofentanglement or ingestion of discarded debris.Marine litter spoils beaches, floats on the sea surface,drifts in the water column due to the current and isalso found on the deep sea bed.Monitoring of the three beaches in Mangaloreviz., Chitrapur, Panambur and Thaneerbhavi hasshown that Chitrapur has the highest rate of marinelitter of 901.5g/m2  (Fig. 1) followed by Thaneerbhavi689.85 g/m2 and Panambur 83.33 g/m2. The items inthe marine litter  varied (Fig. 2) consisting of ice creamspoons, caps, toothbrush, plastic straw, small bottlecaps,  plastic sachets, nylon ropes, plastic mats,slipper, shoes, thermocole, sponges etc. The size ofthe plastic debris ranged from 0.01 cm to 110 cm.The changing profile of the beach with seasonal shiftsand highly eroding coastline takes the marine debrisdirectly to the sea. The sandy beaches looses itsbinding ability during the dry weather phase andburies part of the marine litter. This can then leachinto the soil and cause further health hazard bycontaminating the water column.Fig. 1.  Marine litter in Chitrapur beach
