Abstract
The publication is divided into three parts. Part one reviews the regional social situation under the following headings: the individual, society and the state; population; family; health; education; technology; employment and consumer society. Part two provides an analysis of the current regional social policy and planning situation with a view to clarifying the options available to the region in formulating a social development strategy towards the year 2000 and beyond. Part three describes two broad alternative social development scenarios for the ESCAP region. The major goals being the eradication of poverty, access to justice and the expansion of population participation
