I studied this regulation from theDANTE perspective and will talk about some aspectsof this regulation, which are concerning us.As some of you probably know, a lot of Euro-peans— including myself—are somewhat delicateabout data processing and privacy. While the indus-try complains about the GDPR being a monster ofbureaucracy, there are also some quite interestinglegal bearings that come with it, e.g., it will alsoapply “to the processing of personal data of datasubjects who are in the Union by a controller orprocessor not established in the Union, where theprocessing activities are related to . . . the offeringof . . . services, irrespective of whether a payment ofthe data subject is required, to such data subjectsin the Union . . . ”.This should be interesting especially to compa-nies that are not based in the EU but are handlingdata of EU citizens, and by GDPR Article 83 (5) notcomplying could become expensive: “Infringements. . . shall . . . be subject to administrative fines up to20,000,000 EUR, or in the case of an undertaking, upto 4% of the total worldwide annual turnover of thepreceding financial year, whichever is higher . . . ”.You can imagine that this could become veryinteresting when the next Facebook or similar datascandal comes up.S. TarantoAn automated method based on LATEX for therealization of accessible PDF documents containingformulaeMathematical formulae contained in PDF documentsgenerated using LATEX are usually not accessible withassistive technologies for visually impaired people,such as screen readers and braille displays.To address this issue, we developed Axessibil-ity, a LATEX package which allows creation of PDFdocuments in which the formulae can be read bythese assistive technologies. Axessibility automat-ically generates hidden comments inside PDF doc-uments corresponding to each formula (by meansof the /ActualText PDF attribute). This actualtext contains the LATEX code of the formula, and it isread by screen readers (JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).Moreover, we have created NVDA and JAWS dictio-naries (in English and in Italian) that provide naturallanguage reading for users that do not know LATEX.While this package enables accessibility of math-ematical formulae contained in PDF documents, itdoes not generate PDF/UA compatible documents.Joachim HeinzeThe unchanged changing world of mathematicalpublishing1. A very short overview of the history of mathe-matical publishing with some Springer examples isgiven. Numerische Mathematik was the first of allSpringerNature journals ever, over all disciplines, togo online in 1994.2. The change of the world of publishing: gen-erating (scientists), composing (publishers and scien-tists) and disseminating (librarians and publishers)mathematical content in electronically form. TEXand “online visibility” are the buzzwords here.3. Open access for all mathematical content?“New” initiatives like “Overlay Journals”, based onarXiv, are briefly discussed, as well as the more recentSci-Hub and ResearchGate initiatives.4. Keep track of what has been published andcited. MathSciNet and zbMATH, the two big mathreview journals, in comparison to other initiatives,like Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. Anew initative from China? MathSciDoc.5. Recent developments in the disseminationof scientific information are discussed. Social media(Scholarly Collaboration Networks (SCN)) in scien-tific communication and some new initiatives such as“Sharedit” and “SciGraph” are briefly reflected upon.Artificial intelligence and some hope for the futurewill close the presentation.Tom Hejdayoin—Yet another package for automation ofjournal typesettingA new LATEX package will be presented that allowscombining journal, conference and similar papersinto issues. The most important premises the pack-age are built upon are (1) the papers themselves areindependent documents to the extent that even dif-ferent compilers can be used for different papers, and(2) the papers’ page numbering is automated andthere are tools for communicating metadata betweenthe whole issue and the papers.148 TUGboat, Volume 39 (2018), No. 2Please note that a preliminary version of thepackage will be presented and help from the commu-nity will very likely be sought at the conference.Mico LoretanSelective ligature suppression with the selnoligpackageTEX has long provided straightforward methods forcreating typographic ligatures. Until recently, though,suppressing inappropriate ligatures selectively couldonly be achieved by applying mark-up by hand to adocument. selnolig, a LuaLATEX package, providesthe machinery to perform selective ligature suppres-sion in an automated way that requires minimaluser involvement. The package also provides sets ofligature suppression rules for English and Germanlanguage documents. The talk provides an overviewof the package’s design philosophy and main features,discusses some of its current limitations, and givesthe outlook for further developments.Frank MittelbachA quarter century of docIn this talk I will re-examine my poor attempts atLiterate Programming and how they have shaped(for better or worse) the LATEX world in the pastdecades.It’s about time to rethink some of the conceptsinvented back then—but can we still evolve?Ross MooreAuthoring accessible ‘Tagged PDF’ documentsusing LATEXSeveral ISO standards have emerged for what shouldbe contained in PDF documents, to support appli-cations such as ‘archivability’ (PDF/A) and ‘acces-sibility’ (PDF/UA). These involve the concept of‘tagging’, both of content and structure, so that smartreader/browser-like software can adjust the view pre-sented to a human reader, perhaps afflicted with somephysical disability. In this talk we will look at a rangeof documents which are fully conformant with thesemodern standards, mostly containing at least somemathematical content, created directly in LATEX.The examples are available on the author’s website,web.science.mq.edu.au/~ross/TaggedPDF.The desirability of producing documents thisway will be discussed, along with aspects of howmuch extra work is required of authors. Also on theabove website, and published elsewhere in this issue(pp. 131–135), is a ‘five-year plan’ on how to modifythe production of LATEX-based scientific publicationsto adopt such methods. This means that we can put anythingwe want in these % lines, even code to be processedby other programs besides TEX.In this talk we describe a “semi-preprocessor”,called dednat6, that makes blocks of lines startingwith %L be executed as Lua code, treats blocks of linesstarting with %: as 2D representations of derivationtrees, and treats blocks of lines starting with %Das diagrams in which a 2D representation specifieswhere the nodes are to be placed and a stack-basedlanguage inspired by Forth is used to connect thesenodes with arrows.A predecessor of dednat6, called dednat4, wasa preprocessor in the more usual sense: runningdednat4.lua foo.tex on a shell would convert thetrees and diagrams in %:- and %D-blocks in foo.texto \defs that LATEX can understand, and wouldput these \defs in a file foo.dnt; we had to putin foo.tex an \input "foo.dnt" that would loadthose definitions.Dednat6 does something almost equivalent tothat, but using LuaLATEX to avoid the needs for anexternal preprocessor and for an auxiliary .dnt file.Here is how; the workflow is unusual, so let’s see itin detail.Put a line\directlua{dofile("loaddednat6.lua")}in a file bar.tex. When we run “lualatex bar.tex”that line loads the dednat6 library, initializes theglobal variable tf in the Lua interpreter with aTexFile object, and sets tf.nline=1 to indicatethat nothing in bar.tex has been processed withDednat6 yet.A (low-level) command like\directlua{processlines(200, 300)}in bar.tex would “process the lines 200 to 300 inbar.tex with dednat6”, which means to take all theblocks of %L-lines, %:-lines, and %D-lines between thelines 200 to 300 in bar.tex, run them in the neces-sary interpreters, and then send the resulting LATEXcode—usually \defs— to the latex interpreter.The high-level macro \pu runs\directlua(processuntil{tex.inputlineno})TUGboat, Volume 39 (2018), No. 2 149which runs processlines on the source lines be-tween tf.nline and the line where the current \puis, and advances tf.nline. Meth-ods for running the tests have varied over the pastquarter-century, following changes in the way theteam work.In recent years, the availability of Lua as ascripting language in all TEX systems has meant ithas become the natural choice to support this work.With this as a driver, the team have developed thel3build package (ctan.org/pkg/l3build) for run-ning tests automatically.
