Our find isconsistent with the previously reported depthrange, but it extends the geographic range ofthe species northward by 10° latitude.Munidopsis bermudezi has been reported fromthe coast ofCuba (lat. 21°19'N, long. 76°05'W) at adepth of 2,654 m (Chace 1940, 1942), the Gulf ofMexico (lat. 25°50.5'N, long, 94°2TW) at 3,294 m(Pequegnat and Pequegnat 1970), and north oftheAzores (lat. 45°26'N, long. 25°45'W) at 3,171 m(Sivertsen and Holthuis 1956).The Munida forceps sample also included thegalatheids M. iris A. Milne-Edwards and M. Zon-gipes A. Milne-Edwards and other decapods in-cluding Bathynectes superbus (Costa), Cancerborealis Stimpson, C. irroratus Say, Homarusamericanus H. Milne Edwards, and penaeideanand caridean shrimps. The association of M. for-ceps with M. iris and M. longipes in our sample ispreviously unreported. Some previous recordshave shown associations with M. stimpsoni A.Milne-Edwards (Chace 1942) and with M. flintiBenedict and M. irrasa A. Milne-Edwards(Milne-Edwards 1880 from Pequegnat andPequegnat 1970). Others (Benedict 1902; Bullisand Thompson 1965; Pequegnat and Pequegnat1970) have not specified association of M. forcepswith other galatheids.TABLE I.-Station and morphometric data for Munida forcepsand Munidopsis bermudezi captured near Norfolk Canyon offthe coast of Virginia. Previ-ous accounts did not indicate association of M.bermudezi with other galatheids. Other decapodstaken in the November sample were Lithodesagassizii Smith, Stereomastis sculpta (Smith), andpenaeidean and caridean shrimps, includingHymenodoragracilis Smith, a species occurring inthe Azores sample (Sivertsen and Holthuis 1956).In September, M. bermudezi was associatedwith M. bairdii (Smith) and M. crassa (Smith), aswell as Lithodes agassizii and caridean shrimp.The ovigerous M. bermudezi had not shed alleggs onto the pleopods. The 19 external eggs weretan and averaged 2.8 mm in diameter. These eggswere spherical with no visible blastoderm andwere recently extruded. The ovary was tan andvery well developed. It contained 106 ova averag-ing 2.7 mm in diameter. All eggs were measuredwith an ocular micrometer.We suspect that these species with tropicalaffinities are normally present, though rare, inthe Chesapeake Bight; but they could be acciden-tal migrants. In either case, the probability of de-tection was raised by the recent increase in sam-pling intensity in the vicinity of Norfolk Canyonas compared to other areas of the continental slopebetween Florida and North Carolina. The questionof how far north the tropical fauna extends alongthe southeastern coast of North America is stillunanswered (Briggs 1974). Cerame-Vivas andGray (1966) noted that the inshore fauna of theNorth Carolina shelf was warm temperate(Carolinian) but that the offshore fauna was tropi-cal. In a study ofsea stars of North Carolina, Grayet al. (1968) found 13 species that occurred in anorthward extension of the Caribbean Provincealong the outer shelfand that these species rangedslightly northward past Cape Hatteras.The authors are grateful for the assistance ofFenner A.
