A STUDY ON FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE OF JOHNDENVER’S SONG “THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD”

Abstract

Literature is a creativity of art which has beauty aspect like the diction of the words, the use of rhythm, meter and others. Furthermore, studying literary works can give the readers some advantages like increasing language skills and developing vocabulary achievement. Therefore, the writer chose literature, especially songs as the object of study. The present study tried to analyze the figurative language of the song “The Little Engine That Could” by John Denver. The purposes of the study were to describe the kinds of figurative language and the meanings of figurative language in the song. This research belonged to descriptive research design. In addition, this study used the objective approach. The object of study was the song “The Little Engine That Could” by John Denver especially in the form of figurative language and meaning of the figurative language. The research findings showed that John Denver uses three kinds of figurative languages. More specifically, he used five personifications, one hyperbole, and four symbols. He used figurative language in order to attractive the listeners in order to enjoy listening to his song
