This paper summarise the aim and some of the results of the FP5 Project entitled “Mitigation of Formation of Chlorine Rich Deposits Affecting on Superheater Corrosion under Co-Combustion Conditions“ (CORBI). This project was aimed to improve the understanding of corrosion mechanisms in the cases of biomass and waste combustion. The main focus of the work was on power plant and laboratory tests to characterize fuel and ash behaviour, deposit formation and corrosion mechanisms. The project includes power plant, pilot-scale, laboratory-scale, deposit formation, corrosion and material durability tests. The results of the tests were analysed and evaluated using theoretical calculations and models. The co-ordinator for the project was the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT). Other partners were the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Eisenforschung GmbH, Vattenfall Utveckling AB, ENEL Produzione SpA and the Joint Research Centre, Institute of Energy. The results of the presented research project will give new possibilities for new and existing power plants to increase the share of biomass and waste in energy production. It will assist in the exploitation of local fuels (such as renewable fuels, combustible residues, lignite and other hard to burn fuels) in large and medium-scale power generation and also facilitate cost-optimised fuel selection, leading to an increased security and diversity of fuel supply. Project results contribute to achieveing higher operational reliability, cost savings, less shutdowns, higher boiler steam properties and efficiency of the power plants. Results will be utilized in practice for power plant operation, for boiler design, for defining limits for fuel mixture ratios, and for heat exchanger material design and selection
