Kate Forster, Director of Advocacy, UMatter Student Support and Advocacy, explored hand building and sculptural processes in clay.    I spent the week of July 24th, 2022 in the mountains of western North Carolina doing a deep dive into my creative work in a locale that is so very rife with folk arts and crafts.  I began with lessons and open studio time at the Bascom Center for the Visual Arts in Highlands, NC.  My time at the Bascom focused on wheel throwing based on availability of lessons and studio time. While getting my hands back in clay and familiar again with the medium, I had opportunities to play with altered forms.  I made cuts in some of my bowls to alter their shape, while still allowing them to serve their purpose.  Alteration of traditional forms has always been a place of creative play for me, perhaps inspired by the likes of the mad potter of Mississippi, George Ohr.   During my days at the Bascom, I also attended the Three Potters Symposium and workshops and sessions by master potters.  To take advantage of all the art that exists in this area, I also found a local workshop that offered classes in woodturning.  Both the woodturning and the pottery work I did had a charitable component focused on addressing food insecurity in the area.  This is a great passion of mine, as I serve as the staff advisor of our campus food pantry.  At the Bascom, I threw a series of bowls that I donated to a fall fundraiser (the Empty Bowls event, similar to the Oxford Empty Bowls event) to raise funds for local food pantries.  At the wood turning studio, I also found crafters who were passionate about food insecurity, and a portion of my lesson fee purchased 25 meals for the local pantry.    The stipend covered the cost of lessons at the Bascom, open studio time, and a lesson in wood turning at Scaly Mountain Crafters.  Some funds were also used for travel expenses.
