MEYER, HE:N"RY JOHN File No. Henry John Meyer, one of the pioneers of Grove Township, and from whom, and other members of the family, Meire Grove wa.s named was born in Germany, the son of John and Elizabeth Meyer. John Meyer left the family in the old country in the eaxly fifties, came to America and located at St. Louis, where he earned enough money to pay the passage of his family. After he had sent the check he died. In 1853 Henry John Meyer set out a1one an~ after living a while in Kentucky he made his way to Iowa where he was jo•ned by his mother Elizabeth and and b~other Herman. county In 1858 the three came to Stearns and settled in Grove township, where each secured a claim. When they started they had only five dollars in money, ~~d on this they lived and erected a log house, shingle nails were the only things purchased for the structure, everything else was taken from the forest, even the hinges were made of wood. The roof was shingled with shingles split from logs and hewn into shape. After erecting their homse they started breaking the land, with the assistance of a yoke of oxen. At that time only a few settlers resided there. Elizabeth Meyer lived in Grove township for about eighteen months before she saw another white woman. She made her home with Henry John until her death on October 30, 1878. Some time after settling in Stearns County, Henry John went back to Iowa, married. Elizabeth Schulte and brought her back with him. In the seventies a modern house was erected, the barns and out MEYER, HENRY JOHN Page 2 buildings kept pace with the progress of time. The first few years they were so f ar from church that they had mass in the Henry John Keyer home. The alter they fixed up on a carpenters bench• In the years 1862-1864, Father Mathew Stuernberg built the first church in Meire Grove. The church property as donated by Henry and Herman Meyer. Henry John Meyer assisted in building the church at Meire Grovel and contributed five acres of land, hich the parish still owns. Henry John and Elizabeth (Schulte) Meyer had ten children, three of hich are dead, Henry Gerhard is married to Elizabeth Imdieke and has ten children,Henry (deceased), Rose, Meinulph, August, Albert (deceased), Ellenora, Frances, Reinhold, Mathilda and Alfred. Henry Gerhard Meyer as the first child baptized in the chUl'ch at eire Grove. Pauline, married artin Luetmer and has four children: John, Elizabe h, and Herman. One child died at birth. Herman H. married Paulina Kathe and has fourteen children: Aloys, Anne, Frank (deceased), Josephine, Anthony, Herman, Gertrude, Oarol ine, Joseph, Veronica, Agatha, Frank, Appolonia a.nd Robert. John c. married M ry Imdieke and died a few months after hie marria.ge. Clements married his sister-in-law, Mary (Imdieke) Meyer, and has ten children. John F. married Elizabeth Deiters and has eleven children: Katherine, Adella, Hilda,, Henry, Regina, Ermalind.a, Bernard (deceased) MEYER, HE ffiY JOHN Page 3 Evelyn, Pauline, Olivia and Frances. Bernard married Rose Imdieke and has six children: Thecila, Alma, Verina, Edwin, Merina and Mary. Henry John Meyer and hie wife Elizabeth (Schulte ) Meyer are both buried at Meire Grove.
