Overview and Goal of the Course: This course is designed to introduce pharmacy students to the principles of public health practice with a focus on the Ten Essential Public Health Services. Examples of how pharmacy practice is relevant to and supports these essential public health services will be presented throughout the course. After completing this course, students should be aware of public health issues, know the various agencies and initiatives that are concerned with public health, be able to identify vulnerable populations and risks, understand how pharmacists can contribute to public health, know where to find information about a variety of public health issues, identify community leadership roles for pharmacists, and participate in a health-related community service learning project. Case Assignments: There will be two case assignments during the semester. These case assignments will require integration of pharmacy practice and public health prevention principles. Case assignments must be turned in to the Blackboard site by the due date indicated in course schedule. Late assignments will receive a zero. Two of the class sessions during the semester will be devoted to discussion of the case assignments. Students must be prepared to participate in class discussion.  2  Quizzes: Three quizzes will administered during the semester. The questions will focus on materials covered in the course with particular emphasis on the class lectures.   Midterm: There will be one in-class midterm. Questions will be a combination of multiple choice and short answer.  Service Learning Project Students will be assigned to teams and each team will be assigned to a service learning project.  Service learning combines practical experience and classroom learning to promote student learning and provide a needed service to the community.  Projects that "need to be done" were selected for this endeavor.  Students will have an opportunity to work with individuals on campus and in the community who work to promote health and prevent disease.  This is one project where the students' efforts will actually benefit members of the community.    Service Learning Project Advisors:  Jean Carter and Gayle Cochran will each advise three project teams.    Activities and Assignments Related to Service Learning Projects  Two class sessions are devoted to interim oral presentations by each group. The third and final oral presentation will take place during finals week. The groups may designate one or two presenters to represent the group but each student may not present more than once. Each group will prepare two interim reports. Instructions for the content of these interim reports will be provided. A final written report with any associated materials relevant to the group’s service learning project will be due the day of final presentations. Each student will write a “reflection paper” on the service learning project experience. Finally, each student will be asked to provide evaluations of their service learning project team members.   Course Grade: This course will use the traditional letter grade option without the use of pluses or minuses.  Therefore, final grades will consist of the following:  A, B, C, D, F. Grades will be calculated based on the standard formula (90-100% = A; 80-89% = B; 70-79% = C; 60-69% = D; 59% and below = F).  Expectations for Student Behavior Students will be expected to behave in a professional manner, which means  attend all lectures and behave in a professional manner during the class.  Remember, talking during lectures and presentations is rude and interferes with other students’ learning experience.  It also sends a negative message to our guest speakers.  In addition, children should not be brought to class unless it is an emergency.  Any behavior the instructor determines is disruptive will result in the student being asked to leave class and/or a loss of points.  Please clean up the classroom as you leave.  Pick up garbage, such as food containers and newspapers, and throw them away.    If you need to be excused from class because of a medical or family emergency, please contact the instructor as soon as practical.  If you need to be excused from all classes, contact the Lori Morin (243-4080) who is serving as the Coordinator for Student Affairs and he will notify all instructors for you.  Going to work is not an acceptable excuse for missing exams.  Academic Honesty For cases and assignments, students will be encouraged to work together and discuss their assignments with their classmates; however, when students write their answers, they should do so independently.   3 Answers should be in their own words.  Simply changing a few words of someone else’s work is plagiarism, which will result in failing the assignment.  Late assignments will receive a reduced number of points at the discretion of the instructor.  Unlike assignments, written examinations will be an individual effort.  This means you do not discuss or share information with your colleagues until after all examinations are turned in.    All students must practice academic honesty. Academic misconduct is subject to an academic penalty by the course instructor and/or a disciplinary sanction by the University.   All students need to be familiar with the Student Conduct Code.
