ABSTRACT - In the source of population in 1900, in the Kedu Residency, there was a tendency for some groups of the population to migrate permanently and non-permanently to areas in other Java and outside Java. This is an unusual phenomenon occurring in rural communities in Java. Because in this society for generations there has been a number of customary ties that are believed by the majority of the Javanese population to have no motive for leaving their homeland even though they are poor and rich. The customary ties in the Kedu residency have faded when the population faces a social, economic situation that is less profitable in their daily lives.ABSTRAK-Di dalam sumber kependudukan pada tahun 1900, di Residensi Kedu terdapat suatu kecenderungan sebagian kelompok penduduknya melakukan migrasi secara permanen dan non-permanen ke daerah-daerah di Jawa lainnya maupun di Luar Jawa. Hal ini merupan suatu fenomena yang tidak lazin terjadi di masyarakat pedesaan di Jawa. Oleh karena di masyarakat ini secara turun-temurun terdapat senacam ikatan adat yang dipercayai oleh mayoritas penduduk Jawa yaitu tidak memiliki motif untuk meninggalkan tanah kelahirannya walaupun di dalam kondisi miskin maupun kaya. Ikatan adat di residensi Kedu itu menjadi memudar ketika penduduknya menghadapi dengan situasi sosial, ekonomi yang kurang menguntungkan di dalam kehidupannya sehari-hari
