The purpose of this paper is to report on the results of a preliminary study that will serve as a basis for the application of text corpora to Japanese language policy, with the particular goal of revising Jōyō Kanji, the list of kanji recommended for use in contemporary written Japanese together with their standard on (Sino-Japanese) and kun (native Japanese) readings. Based on current patterns of kanji use in seventy contemporary magazines, we assess the suitability of Jōyō Kanji as the standard of kanji use in Japanese society, and discuss necessary revisions. The details of the study are as follows: (1) Using data from the Linguistic Survey of Contemporary Magazines conducted in 1994, we analyzed the usage frequency of Jōyō and non-Jōyō kanji, both as total frequencies and as partial frequencies categorized according to their standard and non-standard readings. Judging from the frequencies of Jōyō and non-Jōyō kanji in the list of the two thousand most-frequent kanji, Jōyō Kanji can be said to have fulfilled their function as the standard of kanji use in 1994, although some deviations such as high frequency non-Jōyō kanji and non-standard kun readings of Jōyō kanji were also observed. (2) On the basis of the analysis mentioned above, we discuss how revision of Jōyō Kanji might be carried out: what kanji and kanji readings should be considered for addition to, or deletion from, the list
Kanji Focusing : The Psychotherapeutic Use of a Single Kanji Character Embedded in the Implicit
Eugene Gendlin\u27s philosophy and psychotherapy theory show how explicit symbols explicate the implicit while they also bring forth the implicit. Therapists attend to both the explicit symbols articulated by the client, and to the implicit sense of meaning which surrounds the explicit verbal symbols. In art therapy, artistic expressions explicate the implicit, while the artistic expression also brings forth a distinct implicitly felt understanding. In this paper, a kanji or a Chinese character is seen as another avenue of explication, distinct from words and art expressions. A single kanji is explicit and specific, yet it\u27s meaning is implicit and incomplete, since a word completes itself as a combination of kanjis. Moreover, a single character has various meanings, historical contexts and usages, as well as a wide variety of potential meanings. In this paper, a Single Kanji Focusing Short Form is proposed with three session reports. A complete transcript is shown for one of these sessions. In the Single Kanji Focusing Short Form, the step of "finding a handle" is changed to "finding a single kanji". A vignette from a therapy case is presented illustrating how a single Kanji can be used in Focusing-Oriented Therapy. Two different ways of using a single Kanji in therapy are also shown with examples from sessions, the first as a "reminder" and the second in combination with art. Changes to the steps of Focusing remain minimal, yet the single kanji explication can be a familiar and powerful form of explication in cultures that use Chinese characters. The author discusses the single kanji explication as an intersection of the explicit and implicit, and shows further applications of single character explications in groups and in qualitative methods of inquiry
Practical Use of the Databases for Teaching Materials of Kanji
Recently, there are many papers focusing on Sino-Japanese suffix. However, what has not been proved is if there is any lexical limitation on the preceding part of Sino-Japanese suffix. In this research, we did an analysis through the preceding parts data of 9 Sino-Japanese suffixes. We found that the preceding part of Sino-Japanese suffix should mainly be a Sino-Japanese word. Besides, a foreign word is also allowed. On the contrary, we cannot use a Japanese native word to Sino-Japanese suffixes, unless it is of equal lexical category to Sino-Japanese word. In fact, when the preceding part of Sino-Japanese suffix is a Japanese native word, it has to be a noun or a suru-verb, but not an adjective or a gerund. From these rules, we can infer that the prototype of Sino-Japanese suffix is to use to a Sino-Japanese word. And it also spreads to cases using to other types of words if their natures are similar to Sino-Japanese words
