Leadership is not found in a Book: the Western Australian Rural Leadership Program

In February this year nineteen people from all over Western Australia were brought together to explore their leadership potential. These nineteen people came from different walks of life and professions but they all had a common passion, rural Western Australia, and they all had a common goal - to gain skills so that they could lead this state into a thriving 21 century. Over the six months we grew very close and experienced great highs and lows. Without the support of our family and friends, employers and others we would not have accomplished half of what we have over the last six months and we would like to acknowledge this support and empowerment. Soil information sheets for the northern agricultural areas

These soil information sheets are produced for farmers in the Northern Wheatbelt. Each sheet summaries information on the particular soil\u27s characteristic properties and associated land use suitability and management. A photograph of a representative profile is provided for each soil. Technical terms are defined in the glossary. Information is presented under the following headings: Soil series and group, occurrence, native vegetation, soil profile description, characteristic soil properties, soil classification (Australian Soil Classification and Northcote Principal Profile Form)

Plan management for the Cottesloe Reef fish habitat protection area.

This document is the final Plan of Management for the Cottesloe Reef FHPA. The significant contribution made by the CMPG and members of the community in the preparation of this plan is acknowledged and appreciated by the Department of Fisheries. The overall objective of the Plan of Management is to promote and encourage protection of the Cottesloe Reef aquatic habitat and involve the community in its management. It is anticipated that the establishment of the Cottesloe Reef FHPA will provide a framework, through regulations and education, to manage human activities that have, or may have, a destructive impact on the conservation values of the reef system

Sustainable tourism plan for the Houtman Abrolhos Islands

The Abrolhos coral reefs are the southernmost living reefs in the Indian Ocean. They have a unique assemblage of tropical species of fish, reef corals and other invertebrates, which live in close association with temperate species, particularly of algae, and species endemic to Western Australia. The Abrolhos is the centre of the fishery for the commercially valuable western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus). Terrestrial flora and fauna of the Abrolhos are relict and provide important reference areas on ecological interactions. Virtually all the islands of the Abrolhos archipelago have sea bird nesting and breeding areas, and populations of some species of seabirds are of international significance. The Abrolhos is the site of a several important historic shipwrecks, including the 17th Century Dutch ships Batavia and Zeewijk. This combination of features makes the Abrolhos a unique area of Western Australia. In recognition of this, the Minister for Primary Industry; Fisheries, has released the plan Management of the Houtman Abrolhos System, following a process of public consultation

This discussion paper presents the framework in the light of commercial fisheries, in particular the open acess coastal finfish fishery. It provides the background to commercial fisheries management in Western Australia; describes the current situation; and sets the scen for a new management framework, with some important proposals on specific management issues

Abalone aquaculture in Western Australia : Policy guideline.

Experimental or commercial abalone aquaculture is being pursued in many countries with major investments in The United States, Taiwan, China and Korea as well as in Australia. The combined total abalone aquaculture production from China and Taiwan was reported to be in the order of 2,000 tonnes and continues to rise. As cultured ‘cocktail’ abalone are below the legal harvest size of wild abalone, there will be limited competition between aquaculture and the wild fisheries

Aquaculture plan for the Recherche Archipelago

Land supply and land cost for aquaculture may become a limiting factor in the foreseeable future. At present, adequate appropriately zoned land is available at reasonable cost. The most prospective land for aquaculture in or near Esperance is where suitable zoned land occurs over saline ground water aquifers or adjacent to the coast. Careful site selection would be necessary to ensure water supply, waste water disposal, services and operational space can be achieved at reasonable cost
