Revealing correlations between a system and an inaccessible environment

How can we detect that our local, controllable quantum system is correlated with some other inaccessible environmental system? The local detection method developed in recent years allows to realize a dynamical witness for correlations without requiring knowledge of or access to the environment that is correlated with the local accessible quantum system. Here, we provide a brief summary of the theoretical method and recent experimental studies with single photons and trapped ions coupled to increasingly complex environments.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

Solovay's inaccessible over a weak set theory without choice

We study the consistency strength of Lebesgue measurability for ÎŁ31\Sigma^1_3 sets over a weak set theory in a completely choiceless context. We establish a result analogous to the Solovay-Shelah theorem

Using Jet Substructure at the LHC to Search for the Light Higgs Bosons of the CP-Violating MSSM

The CP-violating version of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is an example of a model where experimental data do not preclude the presence of light Higgs bosons in the range around 10 -- 110 GeV. Such light Higgs bosons, decaying almost wholly to b-bbar pairs, may be copiously produced at the LHC, but would remain inaccessible to conventional Higgs searches because of intractable QCD backgrounds. We demonstrate that a significant number of these light Higgs bosons would be boosted strongly enough for the pair of daughter bb-jet pairs to appear as a single `fat' jet with substructure. Tagging such jets could extend the discovery potential at the LHC into the hitherto-inaccessible region for light Higgs bosons.Comment: LaTeX, 33 pages, 5 eps figures and 5 tables embedded. minor changes, to appear in Physical Review

Cannibalism as a life boat mechanism

    Get PDF
Under certain conditions a cannibalistic population can survive when food for the adults is too scarce to support a non-cannibalistic population. Cannibalism can have this lifeboat effect if (i) the juveniles feed on a resource inaccessible to the adults; and (ii) the adults are cannibalistic and thus incorporate indirectly the inaccessible resource. Using a simple model we conclude that the mechanism works when, at low population densities, the average yield, in terms of new offspring, due to the energy provided by one cannibalized juvenile is larger than one

A Small Ultrafilter Number at Every Singular Cardinal

We obtain a small ultrafilter number at ℵω1\aleph_{\omega_1}. Moreover, we develop a version of the overlapping strong extender forcing with collapses which can keep the top cardinal κ\kappa inaccessible. We apply this forcing to construct a model where κ\kappa is the least inaccessible and VκV_\kappa is a model of GCH at regulars, failures of SCH at singulars, and the ultrafilter numbers at all singulars are small

Many Different Uniformity Numbers of Yorioka Ideals

Using a countable support product of creature forcing posets, we show that consistently, for uncountably many different functions the associated Yorioka ideals' uniformity numbers can be pairwise different. In addition we show that, in the same forcing extension, for two other types of simple cardinal characteristics parametrised by reals (localisation and anti-localisation cardinals), for uncountably many parameters the corresponding cardinals are pairwise different.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figure

Haldane Statistics in the Finite Size Entanglement Spectra of Laughlin States

We conjecture that the counting of the levels in the orbital entanglement spectra (OES) of finite-sized Laughlin Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) droplets at filling ν=1/m\nu=1/m is described by the Haldane statistics of particles in a box of finite size. This principle explains the observed deviations of the OES counting from the edge-mode conformal field theory counting and directly provides us with a topological number of the FQH states inaccessible in the thermodynamic limit- the boson compactification radius. It also suggests that the entanglement gap in the Coulomb spectrum in the conformal limit protects a universal quantity- the statistics of the state. We support our conjecture with ample numerical checks.Comment: 4.1 pages, published versio
