An electronic healthcare record server implemented in PostgreSQL
This paper describes the implementation of an Electronic Healthcare Record server inside a PostgreSQL relational database without dependency on any further middleware infrastructure. The five-part international standard for communicating healthcare records (ISO EN 13606) is used as the information basis for the design of the server. We describe some of the features that this standard demands that are provided by the server, and other areas where assumptions about the durability of communications or the presence of middleware lead to a poor fit. Finally, we discuss the use of the server in two real-world scenarios including a commercial application

Many-core compiler fuzzing
We address the compiler correctness problem for many-core systems through novel applications of fuzz testing to OpenCL compilers. Focusing on two methods from prior work, random differential testing and testing via equivalence modulo inputs (EMI), we present several strategies for random generation of deterministic, communicating OpenCL kernels, and an injection mechanism that allows EMI testing to be applied to kernels that otherwise exhibit little or no dynamically-dead code. We use these methods to conduct a large, controlled testing campaign with respect to 21 OpenCL (device, compiler) configurations, covering a range of CPU, GPU, accelerator, FPGA and emulator implementations. Our study provides independent validation of claims in prior work related to the effectiveness of random differential testing and EMI testing, proposes novel methods for lifting these techniques to the many-core setting and reveals a significant number of OpenCL compiler bugs in commercial implementations

Recent project-management literature and high-profile disastersâthe financial crisis, the BP
Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the Fukushima nuclear accidentâillustrate the flaws of
traditional risk models for complex projects. This research examines how various groups with
interests in the Arctic offshore define risks. The findings link the wicked problem framework and
the emerging paradigm of Project Management of the Second Order (PM-2). Wicked problems
are problems that are unstructured, complex, irregular, interactive, adaptive, and novel. The
authors synthesize literature on the topic to offer strategies for navigating wicked problems,
provide new variables to deconstruct traditional risk models, and integrate objective and
subjective schools of risk analysis

A game-based approach to the teaching of object-oriented programming languages
Students often have difficulties when trying to understand the concepts of object-oriented programming
(OOP). This paper presents a contribution to the teaching of OOP languages through a game-oriented
approach based on the interaction with tangible user interfaces (TUIs). The use of a specific type of
commercial distributed TUI (Sifteo cubes), in which several small physical devices have sensing, wireless
communication and user-directed output capabilities, is applied to the teaching of the C# programming
language, since the operation of these devices can be controlled by user programs written in C#. For our
experiment, we selected a sample of students with a sufficient knowledge about procedural programming,
which was divided into two groups: The first one had a standard introductory C# course, whereas
the second one had an experimental C# course that included, in addition to the contents of the previous
one, two demonstration programs that illustrated some OOP basic concepts using the TUI features.
Finally, both groups completed two tests: a multiple-choice exam for evaluating the acquisition of basic
OOP concepts and a C# programming exercise. The analysis of the results from the tests indicates that the
group of students that attended the course including the TUI demos showed a higher interest level (i.e.
they felt more motivated) during the course exposition than the one that attended the standard introductory
C# course. Furthermore, the students from the experimental group achieved an overall better
mark. Therefore, we can conclude that the technological contribution of Sifteo cubes â used as a
distributed TUI by which OOP basic concepts are represented in a tangible and a visible way â to the
teaching of the C# language has a positive influence on the learning of this language and such basic
concepts
