    Serving to secure "Global Korea": Gender, mobility, and flight attendant labor migrants

    This dissertation is an ethnography of mobility and modernity in contemporary South Korea (the Republic of Korea) following neoliberal restructuring precipitated by the Asian Financial Crisis (1997). It focuses on how comparative ÔÇťservice,ÔÇŁ ÔÇťsecurity,ÔÇŁ and ÔÇťsafetyÔÇŁ fashioned ÔÇťGlobal KoreaÔÇŁ: an ongoing state-sponsored project aimed at promoting the economic, political, and cultural maturation of South Korea from a once notoriously inhospitable, ÔÇťbackwardÔÇŁ country (hujinÔÇÖguk) to a now welcoming, ÔÇťadvanced countryÔÇŁ (s┼ĆnjinÔÇÖguk). Through physical embodiments of the culturally-specific idiom of ÔÇťsuperiorÔÇŁ service (s┼Ćbis┼ş), I argue that aspiring, current, and former Korean flight attendants have driven the production and maintenance of this national project. More broadly, as a driver of this national project, this occupation has emerged out of the countryÔÇÖs own aspirational flights from an earlier history of authoritarian rule, labor violence, and xenophobia. Against the backdrop of the Korean stateÔÇÖs aggressive neoliberal restructuring, globalization efforts, and current ÔÇťHell ChosunÔÇŁ (Helchos┼Ćn) economy, a group of largely academically and/or class disadvantaged young women have been able secure individualized modes of pleasure, self-fulfillment, and class advancement via what I deem ÔÇťservice mobilities.ÔÇŁ Service mobilities refers to the participation of mostly women in a traditionally devalued but growing sector of the global labor market, the ÔÇťpink collarÔÇŁ economy centered around ÔÇťfeminineÔÇŁ care labor. Korean female flight attendants share labor skills resembling those of other foreign labor migrants (chiefly from the ÔÇťGlobal SouthÔÇŁ), who perform care work deemed less desirable. Yet, Korean female flight attendants elude the stigmatizing, classed, and racialized category of ÔÇťlabor migrant.ÔÇŁ Moreover, within the context of South KoreaÔÇÖs unique history of rapid modernization, the flight attendant occupation also commands considerable social prestige. Based on ethnographic and archival research on aspiring, current, and former Korean flight attendants, this dissertation asks how these unique care laborers negotiate a metaphorical and literal series of sustained border crossings and inspections between Korean flight attendantsÔÇÖ contingent status as lowly care-laboring migrants, on the one hand, and ostensibly glamorous, globetrotting elites, on the other. This study contends the following: first, the flight attendant occupation in South Korea represents new politics of pleasure and pain in contemporary East Asia. Second, Korean female flight attendantsÔÇÖ enactments of soft, sanitized, and glamorous (hwary┼Ćhada) service help to purify South KoreaÔÇÖs less savory past.     Mobile Arts for Peace: Small Grants Evaluation Report

    The Mobile Arts for Peace (MAP) project is an international study that seeks to provide a comparative approach to peace-building utilising interdisciplinary arts-based practices, working with communities in Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal and Rwanda (see figure 1.1). This research was commissioned by the project lead organisation, the University of Lincoln, and has been delivered by the University of NorthamptonÔÇÖs Institute for Social Innovation and Impact (see Appendix A for research biographies). This report focuses on the Small Grants awarded across the four countries, and acts as a follow-up to the Phase One Report that was produced in the winter of 2021. The delivery of the Small Grants projects has taken place over the last 12 months across the above four countries, and this report seeks to demonstrate, through a narrative case-study approach, how the Small Grants work delivered has promoted arts-based peacebuilding and supported community cohesion. The research reported in this document took place between February and October 2022 and focused on the below research aim and four key research questions. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of the MAP Small Grants projects and understand their impact in communities. Specifically: 1. What outputs were delivered through the Small Grants projects? 2. What outcomes for beneficiaries/stakeholders were delivered through the Small Grants projects? 3. What impacts delivered for communities and societies across the four countries were delivered through the Small Grants projects? The report is structured as follows: first, the methodological approach undertaken in the evaluation will be presented; second, the case-studies across the four countries will be presented and discussed, utilising data gathered by the in-country research teams and the arts-based outputs produced; third, the findings will be summarised, with specific recommendations also made for the implications related to the MAP Large Grant evaluation projects and the recently awarded MAP Medium Grant projects.     This paper compiles research that addresses the importance of fashion in Tudor England. Specifically, it describes the important relationship clothing had to Catholicism and Protestantism and how the differentiation of ideologies could be seen in the construction and design of garments along with the specific adornments worn. The significance of these questions can be seen within the importance of micro-histories in this discipline. Something as simple and overlooked as fashion and fabric can really shed light on how people lived in a religiously divided Tudor England and how fractured their religious and social structures were.     Grasping nothing: a study of minimal ontologies and the sense of music

    If music were to have a proper sense ÔÇô one in which it is truly given ÔÇô one might reasonably place this in sound and aurality. I contend, however, that no such sense exists; rather, the sense of music takes place, and it does so with the impossible. To this end, this thesis ÔÇô which is a work of philosophy and music ÔÇô advances an ontology of the impossible (i.e., it thinks the being of what, properly speaking, can have no being) and considers its implications for music, articulating how ontological aporias ÔÇô of the event, of thinking the absolute, and of sovereigntyÔÇÖs dismemberment ÔÇô imply senses of music that are anterior to sound. John CageÔÇÖs Silent Prayer, a nonwork he never composed, compels a rerethinking of silence on the basis of its contradictory status of existence; Florian Hecker et al.ÔÇÖs Speculative Solution offers a basis for thinking absolute music anew to the precise extent that it is a discourse of meaninglessness; and Manfred WerderÔÇÖs [yearn] pieces exhibit exemplarily that musicÔÇÖs sense depends on the possibility of its counterfeiting.     A Phenomenological Study of How Active Engagement in Black Greek Letter Sororities Influences Christian Members\u27 Spiritual Growth

    This phenomenological study explored how being part of a Black Greek Letter. Organization (BGLO) sorority impacts the spiritual growth of its Christian members. One of the issues explored was the influence relationships within these sororities have on members striving to be like Christ. There is a dichotomy of perspectives regarding Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLOs). They have a significant role in the Black community as organizations that foster leadership, philanthropy, and sisterhood and promote education. They are admired on and off college campuses and in the broader community in graduate chapters. The objective of phenomenology is to describe phenomena of spiritual growth among Christian sorority members from the life experiences of those who live them; that premise guided the interviews conducted for this study. The results found that active engagement in a BGLO sorority positively impacts its members\u27 spiritual growth. From the emotional stories of sisterhood, service, and devotion to prayer, their experiences evidenced strengthened walks of faith. This study contrasts the Anti-BGLO narrative as a testament to these organizations\u27 legacy and practices deeply grounded in the church

    Muhammad Iqbal and Ki Ageng Suryomentaram are critical thinkers who focus on humans as the center of their research. Iqbal's thought is very spectacular with his main theory about perfect humans, and it called 'khudi' or better known as ego. This theory is a form of criticism of fatalistic thinking and sufism pantheism, then it becomes a way to 'insan kamil'. Meanwhile, Ki Ageng Suryomentaram has the kramadangsa theory as a path to a high level of soul or known as ÔÇśmenungsa tanpa tenger'. This research aims to determine the concept of a perfect human in the perspective of Eastern Philosophy and Javanese Philosophy of Muhammad Iqbal and Ki Ageng Suryomentaram. This research is a library research using a qualitative descriptive approach. This research specifically getting more attention to the concept of soul/taste (Suryontaram), personal/ego (Muhammad Iqbal) in humans and describes all the potential aspects of humans to find points of similarities and differences in the thoughts of two figures. The result of this study is these two figures make the khudi/soul ÔÇô Iqbal mentions as Ego ÔÇô as the center of his attention or the material object in his research, the two figures also explain how to reach a high level in human life, the ideas of Muhammad Iqbal and Ki Ageng Suryomentaram can assess and counter the western style of Indonesia's younger generation

    Consent and the Construction of the Volunteer: Institutional Settings of Experimental Research on Human Beings in Britain during the Cold War

    This study challenges the primacy of consent in the history of human experimentation and argues that privileging the cultural frameworks adds nuance to our understanding of the construction of the volunteer in the period 1945 to 1970. Historians and bio-ethicists have argued that medical ethics codes have marked out the parameters of using people as subjects in medical scientific research and that the consent of the subjects was fundamental to their status as volunteers. However, the temporality of the creation of medical ethics codes means that they need to be understood within their historical context. That medical ethics codes arose from a specific historical context rather than a concerted and conscious determination to safeguard the well-being of subjects needs to be acknowledged. The British context of human experimentation is under-researched and there has been even less focus on the cultural frameworks within which experiments took place. This study demonstrates, through a close analysis of the Medical Research Council's Common Cold Research Unit (CCRU) and the government's military research facility, the Chemical Defence Experimental Establishment, Porton Down (Porton), that the `volunteer' in human experiments was a subjective entity whose identity was specific to the institution which recruited and made use of the subject. By examining representations of volunteers in the British press, the rhetoric of the government's collectivist agenda becomes evident and this fed into the institutional construction of the volunteer at the CCRU. In contrast, discussions between Porton scientists, staff members, and government officials demonstrate that the use of military personnel in secret chemical warfare experiments was far more complex. Conflicting interests of the military, the government and the scientific imperative affected how the military volunteer was perceived

    Elite perceptions of the Victorian and Edwardian past in inter-war England

    It is often argued by historians that members of the cultivated Elite after 1918 rejected the pre-war past. or at least subjected it to severe denigration. This thesis sets out to challenge such a view. Above all, it argues that inter-war critics of the Victorian and Edwardian past were unable to reject it even if that was what they felt inclined to do. This was because they were tied to those periods by the affective links of memory, family, and the continually unfolding consequences of the past in the present. Even the severest critics of the pre-war world, such as Lytton Strachey, were less frequently dismissive of history than ambivalent towards it. This ambivalence, it is argued, helped to keep the past alive and often to humanise it. The thesis also explores more positive estimation of Victorian and Edwardian history between the wars. It examines nostalgia for the past, as well as instances of continuity of practice and attitude. It explores the way in which inter-war society drew upon aspects of Victorian and Edwardian history both as illuminating parallels to contemporary affairs and to understand directly why the present was shaped as it was. Again, this testifies to the enduring power of the past after 1918. There are three parts to this thesis. Part One outlines the cultural context in which writers contemplated the Victorian and Edwardian past. Part Two explores some of the ways in which history was written about and used by inter-war society.     The Mission Statement of Jesus: Mark 1:15, Mark's Apocalyptically Charged Decision Motif

    This dissertation examines the mission statement of Jesus in Mark 1:15: ÔÇśThe time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe in the gospelÔÇÖ. The statement will be examined from the perspective of the writer, Mark, who - it will be argued - crafted the statement as a rhetorical device to press his audience for a personal decision to accept Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God and as a call for them to be baptized. It will be argued that the mission statement was fully crafted by Mark rather than originating with the historical Jesus. The analysis examines the apocalyptic imagery that the writer invokes, and how he uses that imagery to charge a decision motif with tension and a call to action, prior to what was expected to be the imminent Parousia of Jesus. The statement in Mark 1:15 is examined from a textual, literary, and historical perspective, considering MarkÔÇÖs literary style from a narrative perspective, his rhetorical goals, and the eschatological and apocalyptic expectations that were operating in the background at the time of the GospelÔÇÖs composition. MarkÔÇÖs use of apocalyptic imagery for rhetorical purposes will be shown to be the product of his circumstances and of those experienced by his community during the first Jewish-Roman War. These circumstances led him to believe that the end of the age had come and that certain prophetic traditions regarding the ÔÇśDay of the LordÔÇÖ were being fulfilled. This therefore led Mark to frame the mission statement as an imperative for early Christian believers to decide to commit themselves fully, through the act of baptism, to suffering discipleship and imminent death in the final moments before the return of Jesus
