What are Hybrid Development Methods Made Of?
Regardless of company size or industry sector, a majority of project teams and companies use customized processes that combine different development methods-so-called hybrid development methods. Even though such hybrid development methods are highly individualized, a common understanding of how to systematically construct synergetic practices is missing. Based on 1,467 data points from a large-scale online survey among practitioners, we study the current state of practice in process use to answer the question: What are hybrid development methods made of? Our findings reveal that only eight methods and few practices build the core of modern software development. This small set allows for statistically constructing hybrid development methods
Simple yet efficient real-time pose-based action recognition
Recognizing human actions is a core challenge for autonomous systems as they
directly share the same space with humans. Systems must be able to recognize
and assess human actions in real-time. In order to train corresponding
data-driven algorithms, a significant amount of annotated training data is
required. We demonstrated a pipeline to detect humans, estimate their pose,
track them over time and recognize their actions in real-time with standard
monocular camera sensors. For action recognition, we encode the human pose into
a new data format called Encoded Human Pose Image (EHPI) that can then be
classified using standard methods from the computer vision community. With this
simple procedure we achieve competitive state-of-the-art performance in
pose-based action detection and can ensure real-time performance. In addition,
we show a use case in the context of autonomous driving to demonstrate how such

Fitting 3D Morphable Models using Local Features
In this paper, we propose a novel fitting method that uses local image
features to fit a 3D Morphable Model to 2D images. To overcome the obstacle of
optimising a cost function that contains a non-differentiable feature
extraction operator, we use a learning-based cascaded regression method that
learns the gradient direction from data. The method allows to simultaneously
solve for shape and pose parameters. Our method is thoroughly evaluated on
Morphable Model generated data and first results on real data are presented.
Compared to traditional fitting methods, which use simple raw features like
pixel colour or edge maps, local features have been shown to be much more
robust against variations in imaging conditions. Our approach is unique in that
we are the first to use local features to fit a Morphable Model.
Because of the speed of our method, it is applicable for realtime
applications. Our cascaded regression framework is available as an open source

Among the multitude of software development processes available, hardly any is used by the book. Regardless of company size or industry sector, a majority of project teams and companies use customized processes that combine different development methods— so-called hybrid development methods. Even though such hybrid development methods are highly individualized, a common understanding of how to systematically construct synergetic practices is missing. In this paper, we make a first step towards devising such guidelines. Grounded in 1,467 data points from a large-scale online survey among practitioners, we study the current state of practice in process use to answer the question: What are hybrid development methods made of? Our findings reveal that only eight methods and few practices build the core of modern software development. This small set allows for statistically constructing hybrid development methods. Using an 85% agreement level in the participants’ selections, we provide two examples illustrating how hybrid development methods are characterized by the practices they are made of. Our evidence-based analysis approach lays the foundation for devising hybrid development methods
Hybrid Software Development Approaches in Practice: A European Perspective
Agile and traditional development approaches are used in combination in todays software development. To improve the understanding and to provide better guidance for selecting appropriate development approaches, it is important to analyze such combinations in practice. Results obtained from an online survey strongly confirm that hybrid development approaches are widely used in industry. Our results show that hybrid development approaches: (i) have become reality for nearly all companies; (ii) are applied to specific projects even in the presence of company-wide policies for process usage; (iii) are neither planned nor designed but emerge from the evolution of different work practices; and, (iv) are consistently used regardless of company size or industry secto
A 3D Face Modelling Approach for Pose-Invariant Face Recognition in a Human-Robot Environment
Face analysis techniques have become a crucial component of human-machine
interaction in the fields of assistive and humanoid robotics. However, the
variations in head-pose that arise naturally in these environments are still a
great challenge. In this paper, we present a real-time capable 3D face
modelling framework for 2D in-the-wild images that is applicable for robotics.
The fitting of the 3D Morphable Model is based exclusively on automatically
detected landmarks. After fitting, the face can be corrected in pose and
transformed back to a frontal 2D representation that is more suitable for face
recognition. We conduct face recognition experiments with non-frontal images
from the MUCT database and uncontrolled, in the wild images from the PaSC
database, the most challenging face recognition database to date, showing an
improved performance. Finally, we present our SCITOS G5 robot system, which
incorporates our framework as a means of image pre-processing for face
analysis
3D Face Tracking and Texture Fusion in the Wild
We present a fully automatic approach to real-time 3D face reconstruction
from monocular in-the-wild videos. With the use of a cascaded-regressor based
face tracking and a 3D Morphable Face Model shape fitting, we obtain a
semi-dense 3D face shape. We further use the texture information from multiple
frames to build a holistic 3D face representation from the video frames. Our
system is able to capture facial expressions and does not require any
person-specific training. We demonstrate the robustness of our approach on the
challenging 300 Videos in the Wild (300-VW) dataset. Our real-time fitting

Hybrid Software and System Development in Practice: Waterfall, Scrum, and Beyond
Software and system development faces numerous challenges of rapidly changing markets. To address such challenges, companies and projects design and adopt specific development approaches by combining well-structured comprehensive methods and flexible agile practices. Yet, the number of methods and practices is large, and available studies argue that the actual process composition is carried out in a fairly ad-hoc manner. The present paper reports on a survey on hybrid software development approaches. We study which approaches are used in practice, how different approaches are combined, and what contextual factors influence the use and combination of hybrid software development approaches. Our results from 69 study participants show a variety of development approaches used and combined in practice. We show that most combinations follow a pattern in which a traditional process model serves as framework in which several fine-grained (agile) practices are plugged in. We further show that hybrid software development approaches are independent from the company size and external triggers. We conclude that such approaches are the results of a natural process evolution, which is mainly driven by experience, learning, and pragmatism
Modification of polyelectrolyte multilayer coatings using nanoparticles to optimize adhesion and proliferation of different cell types
Adapting characteristics of biomaterials specifically for in vitro and in vivo applications is becoming increasingly important in order to control interactions between material and biological systems. These complex interactions are influenced by surface properties like chemical composition, charge, mechanical and topographic attributes. In many cases it is not useful or even not possible to alter the base material but changing surface, to improve biocompatibility or to make surfaces bioactive, may be achieved by thin coatings. An already established method is the coating with polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEM). To adjust adhesion, proliferation and improve vitality of certain cell types, we modified the roughness of PEM coatings. We included different types nanoparticles (NP’s) in different concentrations into PEM coatings for controlling surface roughness. Surface properties were characterized and the reaction of 3 different cell types on these coatings was tested
Experiencing adaptive case management capabilities with Cognoscenti
In a world with rapidly changing customer requirements and the increased role of technology, companies need more flexible systems to adapt their processes and react dynamically to changes. Adaptive Case Management (ACM) comes into consideration by providing a concept to adapt to changing business conditions. Within our research project we did a first foundational evaluation of the potential of ACM in supporting unpredictable sales processes. Based on a set of criteria we tested the concept of ACM with the open source tool Cognoscenti. The evaluation gave us the possibility to experience the concept of ACM. Hence we were able to provide a statement about the potential of ACM within the context of an unpredictable sales process, setting the path to further research and discussion of ACM in the area of sales processes
