    Exploring features and opportunities of rapid-growth wine firms in Chile

    While much has been studied regarding the wine industry in Spain and France, little has been studied in developing countries. The aim of this work is to study the characteristics of dynamic wine firms in Chile. This paper presents qualitative research and reports six cases of wine companies, where several vari- ables are analyzed according to Barringer, Jones and Neubaum framework. These variables include prior experience, founders’ knowledge regarding large company management, the use of strategic-planning systems and the use of new technology in the majority of its production. The results of this research could prove insightful for wine entrepreneurs looking to enhance their growth, based on greater differentiation and innovation, and not only on being competitive in pricing

    ResumenEn el mundo de los negocios las condiciones del entorno han venido transformándose de manera acelerada y profunda. Los líderes y directivos de los tiempos modernos necesitan estar renovando permanentemente sus competencias para disponer de herramientas intelectuales y prácticas de utilidad en su gestión cotidiana. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo, aportar con una discusión teórica sustentada en una intensa investigación documental y de campo relativa a las competencias que, en la lógica de la realidad actual, los directivos de primer nivel necesitan desarrollar en cualquier parte del mundo, sin considerar el entorno específi co en que desempeñen sus cargos. Estas competencias constituyen una demanda creciente en la formación de directivos y, de acuerdo con lo visto en la literatura, se vinculan principalmente con capacidades mentales y/o personales –llamadas habilidades blandas– más que con destrezas mecánicas o prácticas. El desarrollo de competencias directivas contribuye a mejorar el desempeño de las organizaciones. La revisión de la literatura da cuenta de lo anterior, en cuanto a determinar características que permitan tener una visión estratégica más global para comprender el entorno cambiante y mejorar el desempeño de la organización.AbstractThe environmental conditions have been changing rapidly and deeply the business. Leaders and managers of modern times need to be constantly renewing their skills to provide the intellectual tools and practices used in their daily management activities. This study aims to provide a theoretical discussion based on intensive research and fi eld documentary on the competences that, in the logic of the present reality, leaders and top-level executives anywhere in the world need to develop, regardless of the specifi c environment in which they perform their duties. These skills are being increasingly demanded on the training of managers and, as seen in the literature, are linked primarily with mental capacities and/or personal – so-called soft skills – rather than mechanical skills or practices. The development of management's competences helps improve the performance of organizations. The review of the literature shows that, in terms of identifying features that take a more comprehensive strategic vision to understand the changing environment and to improve organizational performance

    ResumenEl objetivo del presente artículo es revisar el verdadero significado del marketing al servicio de las organizaciones cuya finalidad es neta y exclusivamente social. El artículo toma distancia del mercadeo social —tan ampliamente investigado — y evita en todo momento una adopción discrecional de herramientas y procesos del marketing comercial; busca en consecuencia, consolidar un enfoque acorde con la naturaleza, actividades y público de las organizaciones sociales. A partir del análisis de literatura especializada de las ciencias sociales y políticas, como institucionalismo, política social, bienes públicos, pobreza y vulnerabilidad, se deduce un lenguaje pertinente para esta tipología mercadológica, y se trasciende a su respectivo contraste con la realidad social colombiana. Estas claridades permiten, finalmente, proponer el contenido de un curso sobre asuntos sociales y de marketing.AbstractThe objective of this article is to determine the real meaning of marketing dedicated to the service of social organizations. This work distances itself from, the so widely researched, social marketing, and does not propose the discretionary adoption of tools and processes of commercial marketing. Instead of this, the article looks for an approach in keeping with the public nature and activities of social organizations. From the analysis of specialized literature in the field of social and political sciences, such as institutionalism, social programs, public property, poverty and vulnerability, the article suggests the most suitable vocabulary for this type of marketing, and contrasts the literature with Colombian social reality. Finally, key points are presented in order to propose the content of a course on social issues and marketing

    ResumenEl presente artículo tiene por objetivo presentar una herramienta denominada hexágono de imagen que, junto con la herramienta de los hexágonos de utilidad-rentabilidad, desarrollada anteriormente, pretende servir de soporte a la gestión de la sustentabilidad, en pos de lograr un equilibrio dinámico entre ambos aspectos: rentabilidad e imagen. La metodología empleada comprende una síntesis del marco teórico de la investigación, consistente en una revisión bibliográfica y posterior propuesta sobre los conceptos e implicancias de imagen y rentabilidad como determinantes de la sustentabilidad organizacional. Como resultado se construyeron las bases lógicas y conceptuales del hexágono de imagen que se complementa con el anteriormente desarrollado hexágono de utilidad rentabilidad para operacionalizar en forma integrada la sustentabilidad organizacional.AbstractThe present article presents a tool called an image hexagon which, together with the previously developed usefulness/performance hexagon, is intended to provide support for the management of sustainability, in order to achieve a dynamic equilibrium between both aspects: performance and image. The method employed comprises a theoretical synthesis of the research, consisting of a literature review and a subsequent proposal on the concepts and implications of image and performance as determining factors of organizational sustainability. As a result, logical and conceptual image hexagon bases were constructed, which are complemented with the previously developed usefulness/performance hexagon, to put organizational sustainability into operation in an integrated manner

    Seasonal and Interannual Variations of the Energy Flux Equator and ITCZ. Part II: Zonally Varying Shifts of the ITCZ

    The ITCZ lies at the ascending branch of the tropical meridional overturning circulation, where near-surface meridional mass fluxes vanish. Near the ITCZ, column-integrated energy fluxes vanish, forming an atmospheric energy flux equator (EFE). This paper extends existing approximations relating the ITCZ position and EFE to the atmospheric energy budget by allowing for zonal variations. The resulting relations are tested using reanalysis data for 1979–2014. The zonally varying EFE is found as the latitude where the meridional component of the divergent atmospheric energy transport (AET) vanishes. A Taylor expansion of the AET around the equator relates the ITCZ position to derivatives of the AET. To a first order, the ITCZ position is proportional to the divergent AET across the equator; it is inversely proportional to the local atmospheric net energy input (NEI) that consists of the net energy fluxes at the surface, at the top of the atmosphere, and zonally across longitudes. The first-order approximation captures the seasonal migrations of the ITCZ in the African, Asian, and Atlantic sectors. In the eastern Pacific, a third-order approximation captures the bifurcation from single- to double-ITCZ states that occurs during boreal spring. In contrast to linear EFE theory, during boreal winter in the eastern Pacific, northward cross-equatorial AET goes along with an ITCZ north of the equator. EFE and ITCZ variations driven by ENSO are characterized by an equatorward (poleward) shift in the Pacific during El Niño (La Niña) episodes, which are associated with variations in equatorial ocean energy uptake

    O confinamento por COVID-19 e a satisfação com as empresas de entrega de comida em domicílio

    The objectives of this research are to qualitatively explore the attitudes towards online food delivery providers (ODP) during the COVID-19 lockdown in Ecuador, and to quantitatively analyse whether there are changes in e-satisfaction with ODPs and three determinants (e-service quality, delivery workers personal aspects, and food quality). Qualitative analysis results of 104 customer opinions showed positive attitudes towards ODPs and a new motivation for using this service: risk exposure reduction. However, concerns about the application of biosafety guidelines by restaurants and delivery workers were also evident. A structural equations model (n=483) revealed that personal aspects lost significance as a determinant for e-satisfaction during the lockdown, most likely due to personal contact reduction during delivery.Los objetivos de esta investigación son explorar cualitativamente las actitudes hacia los proveedores de comida a domicilio (ODP por sus siglas en inglés) durante el confinamiento por COVID-19 en Ecuador y analizar cuantitativamente si hay cambios en la satisfacción digital respecto a los ODPs y tres determinantes (calidad del servicio digital, aspectos personales de los repartidores y calidad de la comida) en dicho periodo. Los resultados del análisis cualitativo a 104 opiniones de clientes mostraron actitudes positivas hacia los ODPs y una nueva motivación para su uso: reducción de la exposición al riesgo. La preocupación sobre la aplicación de medidas de bioseguridad por restaurantes y repartidores también fue evidente. Un modelo de ecuaciones estructurales (n=483) mostró que la variable aspectos personales perdió significancia como determinante de la satisfacción digital durante el confinamiento; resultado atribuible a la reducción del contacto personal durante la entrega de comida.Os objetivos desta pesquisa são explorar qualitativamente as atitudes em relação às empresas de entrega de comida em domicílio (ODP pela sigla em inglês) durante o confinamento por COVID-19 no Equador e analisar quantitativamente se há mudanças na satisfação digital em relação aos ODPs e três fatores determinantes (qualidade do serviço digital, aspectos pessoais dos entregadores e qualidade da comida) no referido período. Os resultados da análise qualitativa de 104 opiniões de clientes evidenciam atitudes positivas em relação aos ODPs e uma nova motivação para a sua utilização: redução da exposição ao risco. A preocupação com a aplicação de medidas de biossegurança por restaurantes e entregadores também foi evidente.     Impacto da crise do COVID-19 no sistema bancário português. Abordagem de ordenação linear

    The goal of this paper is to assess the resilience of Portuguese banks to the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, diagnostic variables of 19 banks were selected and prioritized using linear ordering methods. This methodology allowed us to perform rankings of banks using six linear ordering methods and taking into account two weighting procedures and two variants of the diagnostic feature. The study was also supplemented by a sensitivity analysis and an optimization procedure aimed at identifying the optimal linear ordering method. The main results obtained show that the resilience of Portuguese banks is not evenly distributed among individual banks. These findings could be used by regulators to plan support measures for the most fragile banks.El objetivo de este trabajo es evaluar la resistencia de los bancos portugueses al impacto potencial de la pandemia por COVID-19. Para ello, se seleccionaron y priorizaron variables de diagnóstico de 19 bancos mediante métodos de ordenamiento lineal; esta metodología permitió realizar rankings de bancos utilizando seis métodos de ordenamiento lineal teniendo en cuenta dos procedimientos de ponderación y dos variantes de la característica de diagnóstico. El estudio también se complementó con un análisis de sensibilidad y un procedimiento de optimización destinado a identificar el método ideal de ordenación lineal. Los principales resultados obtenidos muestran que la resistencia de los bancos portugueses no se distribuye uniformemente entre los bancos individuales. Los reguladores podrían utilizar estos resultados para planificar medidas de apoyo a los bancos más frágiles.O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a resistência dos bancos portugueses ao potencial impacto da pandemia COVID-19.
