Intermolecular proton (H+) transport pathways of the bifunctional photoacid 7-hydroxyquinoline (7HQ) in deuterated methanol solutions are examined with femtosecond UV-pump/IR-probe spectroscopy. Following electronic excitation, 7HQ converts simultaneously into a strong acid and a strong base. This bifunctional character is due to its molecular structure, which consists of both an H+-donor –OH group and a H+-acceptor nitrogen lone pair. Previous findings reported on the photoinduced reaction of 7HQ in water/methanol mixtures have shown that H+ transport proceeds from the quinoline nitrogen lone pair to –OH group via a hydroxide/methoxide (HO-/CH3O-) transport mechanism or Pathway II with time constants ranging from hundreds to tens of picoseconds. This implies 7HQ converts from an initially photoexcited neutral (N^*) to a zwitterionic (Z^*) tautomer, where the cationic (C^*) is the intermediate charged species. Here, we used the formate base (HCOO-) as the H+ acceptor to quantitatively switch the H+ transport dynamics from proton vacancy transport (Pathway II) to excess proton transport mechanism (Pathway I). At high molar concentrations, Pathway I prevails and about 85% of N^* are converted into the anionic (A^*) species, implying unequivocally that HCOO- converts into conjugate formic acid (HCOOD). Still, HCOOD is not suitable to rapidly mediate H+ transport from the –OH group to the N lone pair. Using higher concentrations of amphoteric imidazole, Pathway I becomes predominant and, in addition, the overall yield of N^*→ A^*→ Z^* increases substantially, when compared to both HCOO- (four times faster) and bulk solvent solutions (2.4 times faster)

A mathematical study of the Darwin-Howie-Whelan equations for Transmission Electron Microscopy

In this thesis a mathematical study on the Darwin--Howie--Whelan (DHW) equations is provided. The equations are commonly used to describe and simulate the scattering of fast electrons in transmission electron microscopy (TEM). They are a system for infinitely many envelope functions, derived from the Schrödinger equation. However, for the simulation of images only a finite set of envelope functions is used, leading to a finite system of ordinary differential equations in the thickness direction of the specimen. Until now, there has been no systematic discussion about the accuracy of approximations depending on the choice of the finite sets used. This question is approached here by studying the mathematical structure of the system and providing error estimates to evaluate the accuracy of special approximations, like the two-beam and the systematic-row approximation. Then a mathematical model and a toolchain for the numerical simulation of TEM images of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) is developed. A simulation study is performed on indium gallium arsenide QDs with different shapes and the resulting TEM images are compared to experimental ones. Finally, symmetries observed in TEM images are investigated with respect to the DHW equations. Then, mathematical proofs are given showing that the intensities of the solutions of the DHW equations are invariant under specific transformations. A combination of these invariances with specific properties of the strain profile can then explain symmetries observed in TEM images. The results are demonstrated by using selected examples in the field of semiconductor nanostructures, such as quantum wells and quantum dots

In this thesis, I investigated the morpho-physiology and behavior of two species of African mormyrid weakly electric fish, Marcusenius victoriae and Petrocephalus degeni, in the laboratory and in one of their natural habitats, the Lwamunda Swamp in Uganda. The two main objectives of this work were to (i) observe behavioral rhythms and habitat use patterns of both species under natural and laboratory conditions, and (ii) assess expression and plasticity of morpho-physiological traits that might enable P. degeni to survive naturally occurring low oxygen conditions (hypoxia). Behavioral rhythms were recorded in the laboratory over 42 hours and in the habitat on six sampling days. In the laboratory, both species spent close to 100% of the time in their shelter during the day and actively explore their environment at night. In the swamp lagoon, fish were most often encountered in structurally complex habitats under floating vegetation and ventured into open and unsheltered areas of the lagoon at night, presumably to forage and interact. Concomitant in-situ oxygen measurements revealed that these fish were present, and presumably most active during periods of extreme nocturnal hypoxia in their swamp habitat. To investigate respiratory traits of swamp-dwelling P. degeni, I conducted respirometry experiments and measured blood lactate and hemoglobin and gill morphometrics on the first two gill arches. Fish showed low routine oxygen consumption rates, which they maintained until a very low ambient oxygen partial pressure was reached. Additionally, they had high concentrations of hemoglobin and lactate in their blood. Up to 75 days of normoxia exposure reduced blood hemoglobin and gill filament length

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Loose and Compressed Wood Chip Mulch in Field-Grown Blueberries—A Preliminary Study

Blueberry production in the field faces several challenges, including competition from weeds and soil suitability. Different mulch types are widely used in blueberry cultivation to control weeds, conserve moisture, and mitigate soil erosion. However, the comparative effects of loose and compressed wood chips on fruit quality and weed control in blueberry production systems have not been studied. Many farmers use expensive imported peat moss as soil covers, while others apply organic mulches such as chips or chaff, which can be easily washed away by runoff. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of compressed mulching boards (MB) fabricated without the use of chemical adhesives using pressurized steam and compression technologies in blueberry cultivation. During the two growing seasons, the effectiveness of compressed MB on soil moisture retention, fruit quality, and weed biomass was compared to that of wood chip (WC) and control treatments in a blueberry field. Although a significant difference was observed in the fruit fresh weight, no significant differences were observed in the other fruit growth parameters for all the treatments. Generally, the compressed MB significantly improved soil moisture retention capacity compared to WC and control during the two-year study. The compressed MB showed effective weed suppression ability by significantly reducing the weed biomass at all sampling times

Banning antibiotic growth promotors and other antimicrobials in poultry production due to the increasing antimicrobial resistance leads to increased feeding of potential alternatives such as probiotics. However, the modes of action of those feed additives are not entirely understood. They could act even with a direct effect on the immune system. A previously established animal-related in vitro system using primary cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was applied to investigate the effects of immune-modulating feed additives. Here, the immunomodulation of different preparations of two probiotic Bacillus strains, B. subtilis DSM 32315 (BS), and B. amyloliquefaciens CECT 5940 (BA) was evaluated. The count of T-helper cells and activated T-helper cells increased after treatment in a ratio of 1:3 (PBMCs: Bacillus) with vital BS (CD4+: p p p p p p Bacillus), the count of T-helper cells and activated T-helper cells increased (CD4+: p p Bacillus strains enhanced T cell activation and proliferation, which points towards an immune-modulating effect of both strains on chicken immune cells in vitro. Therefore, we suggest that administering these probiotics can improve the cellular adaptive immune defense in chickens, thereby enabling the prevention and reduction of antimicrobials in chicken farming

Peer Reviewe
