Contains fulltext : 80349.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)PURPOSE: To quantify dynamic changes in aortoiliac dimensions using dynamic electrocardiographically (ECG)-gated computed tomographic angiography (CTA) and to investigate any potential impact on preoperative endograft sizing in relation to observer variability. METHODS: Dynamic ECG-gated CTA was performed in 18 patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms. Postprocessing resulted in 11 datasets per patient: 1 static CTA and 10 dynamic CTA series. Vessel diameter, length, and angulation were measured for all phases of the cardiac cycle. The differences between diastolic and systolic aneurysm dimensions were analyzed for significance using paired t tests. To assess intraobserver variability, 20 randomly selected datasets were analyzed twice. Intraobserver repeatability coefficients (RC) were calculated using Bland-Altman analysis. RESULTS: Mean aortic diameter at the proximal neck was 21.4+/-3.0 mm at diastole and 23.2+/-2.9 mm at systole, a mean increase of 1.8+/-0.4 mm (8.5%, p<0.01). The RC for the aortic diameter at the level of the proximal aneurysm neck was 1.9 mm (8.9%). At the distal sealing zones, the mean increase in diameter was 1.7+/-0.3 mm (14.1%, p<0.01) for the right and 1.8+/-0.5 mm (14.2%, p<0.01) for the left common iliac artery (CIA). At both distal sealing zones, the mean increase in CIA diameter exceeded the RC (10.0% for the right CIA and 12.6% for the left CIA). CONCLUSION: The observed changes in aneurysm dimension during the cardiac cycle are small and in the range of intraobserver variability, so dynamic changes in proximal aneurysm neck diameter and aneurysm length likely have little impact on preoperative endograft selection. However, changes in diameter at the distal sealing zones may be relevant to sizing, so distal oversizing of up to 20% should be considered to prevent distal type I endoleak

The Avatars of Orable-Guibourc from French 'chanson de geste' to Italian 'romanzo cavalleresco'. A Persistent Multiple Alterity

    Get PDF
Orable-Guibourc, a Saracen princess in the Guillaume d'Orange (or Monglane) cycle of chansons de geste epitomizes the «Saracen princess» story, in which a Muslim princess abandons her community for love of a Christian fighter. Yet Guibourc's character never becomes truly a part of her new community: linked to her previous religion and family, fears of treachery distance her from the Christians. Similarly, her having renounced her upbringing keeps her forever from her home, though her husband and family there still claim her as property. Writers from the first Old French texts where she appears through Renaissance Italians play upon this double jeopardy, interpreting and depicting her role and acts in different ways, emphasizing varying aspects of her personality, family and background, keeping her forever different, forever Other. This article outlines some of the historical contexts and forms in which authors worked to produce these avatars of Orable/Guibourc

Two 'Otinel' frescoes in Treviso and Sesto al Reghena

The two Otinel frescoes in Treviso and Sesto al Reghena represent unique works of art, being inspired by a version of the Chanson d’Otinel circulating in the area of Veneto in the fourteenth century, and now lost. Many critics have tried to trace back the origins of the Otinel; however, the subject is still matter for investigation. The two Italian frescoes confirm that the legend was popular throughout the fourteenth century in northern Italy.KEYWORDSOtinel – Affreschi – Sesto al Reghena – TrevisoOtinel – Frescoes – Sesto al Reghena – Trevis

'Peregrinatio animae': Cartographic Spaces and Epistemological Debates in the Franco-Italian 'Huon d'Auvergne'

This essay proposes an interpretation of the mercantile and spiritual spaces in the Franco-Italian Huon d'Auvergne romance-epic using fourteenth-century cartographic principles. Central to this reading is the scholastic refashioning of the Dantean Limbo model in the Huon epic. Here, Ptolemy oversees a congregation of Sorbonne professors, depicted as ancient authorities, who are condemned to futile debate and unruly students. This discussion proposes an interpretation that links the epic's criticism of Aristotelianism, and embrace of Neo-platonic epistemology, to the representations of mercantile (portolan) and symbolic (mappamundi) cartographic contours

Marrying and Divorcing in Postwar Europe. Ideological Struggles across the Iron Curtain

    Get PDF
In the middle of the twentieth century, European families found themselves at the centre of radical social and political transformations that affected both the realities of daily life and the way in which family life was discussed in the public arena and regulated by the law. Taking Italy and Poland as its main case studies, this book re-examines the major political and ideological confrontations that crossed postwar Europe from the perspective of ordinary families and of those who sought to regulate the way in which they lived. The main protagonists of this exploration are politicians, scholars, priests and, of course, families themselves. The main competitions discussed took place between Communist Parties and the Catholic Church. While most analyses of Cold War Europe have concentrated on either half of the continent, this book argues that understanding the logic of postwar cultural and ideological competitions requires exploring the commonalities and differences that existed across the iron curtain. Although hardly ever brought together in historical analyses of the postwar era, Italy and Poland provide a rich terrain for such analysis. In both countries, references to family and marriage were used to promote alternative programmes of transformation and to assert alternative visions of the world. In both countries, the overwhelming influence asserted by the Catholic Church over family affairs made the struggle for ideological influence all the more dramatic, rendering family life a crucial terrain for political engagement. Both in Italy and in Poland, the battle fought over the regulation of family and marriage shaped the postwar social, political and cultural landscape

Il lessico coranico di flora e fauna Aspetti strutturali e paleolinguistici

In this study, three linguistic methods are synergistically applied to the lexicon of the Koran in order to reconstruct the material context of early Islam. Due to their material relevance, the focus is placed on the zoonyms and phytonyms of this lexicon. The comparative method selects among them thirty nouns which are frequent in terms of genetic relationship: zoonyms and phytonyms with cognates in North-West and South Semitic and with no Semitic cognates. The structural method highlights the semantic connections among these nouns, and the philological method better defines them by investigating Arabic lexicography. These thirty zoonyms and phytonyms reveal in a coherent and detailed manner a non-desert material context

The fragment of the Bovo d’Antona stored at Udine, Archivio Capitolare, Fondo Nuovi manoscritti represents a piece of the rich European tradition of this famous epic story. The verses of the fragment are also interesting from a linguistic point of view and, above all, lexical, because they attest many words and forms that do not appear elsewhere. The contribution gives the reader a linguistic study of the text and critically revises the edition that gave Pio Rajna in 1887.KEYWORDSLingua e letteratura francese medievale – Lingua e letteratura franco-italiana – Code-mixing – Bovo d’AntonaMedieval French Language and Literature – Medieval Franco-Italian Language and Literature – Code-mixing – Bevis of Hampto
