Artifacts of design : Sketching, drawing, scripts and modeling
The conference proceedings are a collection of contributions from the 4th Forum Architekturwissenschaft on architectural design and its artifacts. The Conference was held in November, 2017 at the TU Berlin.
Contributors to the present publication are interested in the epistemic potential of sketches, renderings, models, photographs and drawings in architectural design. All follow the thesis that media in the draft not only depict, but in turn are the basis of further acts of knowledge. Using case studies ranging from the Middle Ages to the present, the texts trace the particular qualitative influence that "making" a design has on the artifact for this design. The structure for both the conference and this publication came out of the attempt to bring together theoretical positions and the results of practical work - artifacts: The conference was associated with an exhibition at the Museum of Architecture of the TU Berlin and in the present volume, theoretical contributions alternate with textual descriptions of the shown artifacts.2., aktualisierte Auflag
Das Projekt umfasst mehrere regionale Teilstudien, die sich aus den deutschlandweiten Erhebungen ergeben (siehe ReadMe-Datei).Within the framework of the project, videographic recordings have been produced by means of which the new spatial and interaction forms of "social distancing" can be documented. The aim was to build on this to understand more precisely the complex, culturally and situationally organized dynamics of public encounters in the context of infection events and hygiene measures. The study collected focused and comparative data of relevant everyday situations in public spaces across Germany. The project contains several partial studies resulting from the regional recordings (see ReadMe-file).Berlin University Allianc
A Fractional Time-Derivative Model for Severe Wear: Hypothesis and Implications
Based on the example of wear of polymers, which exhibit a power-law time variation of the wear loss under constant loading conditions, a fractional time-derivative wear equation has been introduced. The wear contact problem with a fixed contact zone is solved using the known method of separation of spatial and time variables. It is shown that during the wear process, the contact pressure approaches a uniform distribution over the contact area, which is termed as a quasi-steady-state solution, since the mean volumetric wear rate does not tend to become constant. It is of interest that the contact pressure variation displays a decaying oscillatory nature in the case of severe wear, when the mean volumetric wear rate increases with time
Phytic Acid Content of Faba Beans (Vicia faba)âAnnual and Varietal Effects, and Influence of Organic Cultivation Practices
Legumes such as faba beans (Vicia faba) are once again gaining popularity, especially in Europe. This is due to the fact that they are an important source of plant-based proteins for human as well as animal nutrition. In addition to a high protein content, faba beans have a wide range of secondary plant metabolites (SPMs). Some of them, such as phytic acid (PA, inositol hexakisphosphate), are discussed controversially with regard to their role as dietary compounds. As ecophysiological conditions and agronomical practices are well known to alter SPMs in (food) plants, it is hypothesized that the farming system has an impact on the overall SPMs content in plants and there might be a correlation between organically grown bean samples and PA content. Consequently, this study aimed at characterizing the German-wide variation in the PA content of faba beans produced under real cultivation conditions. Influencing factors such as cultivar and use of organic or conventional cultivation have been evaluated in order to reveal dependencies of PA in legumes. All bean samples were obtained from different conventional and organic farms from eleven German federal states over three consecutive cultivation years (2016â2018). However, beans did not show annual effects in PA content. As expected, there were dependencies related to the cultivar. Furthermore, significant differences between conventionally and organically grown beans were found, independent of fungicide or insecticide use.BMEL, 2815EPS035, Modellhaftes Demonstrationsnetzwerk zur Ausweitung und Verbesserung des Anbaus und der Verwertung von Leguminosen mit Schwerpunkt Erbsen und Bohnen in Deutschlan
The Influential Mechanisms of Power Actor Groups on Policy Mix Adoption: Lessons Learned from Feed-In Tariffs in the Renewable Energy Transition in Iran and Germany
The Energy transition is fiercely competitive. The incumbents of fossil-based energy are in conflict with the advocate coalitions of transition in energy policy changes. Such changes do not occur as sudden punctuation via an external shock, but rather incrementally and over time, by incorporating power insights such as lobbies, coalitions, and campaigns. This article provides a framework grounded in theoretical power theories and draws additional insights from policy mix studies. It investigates how focusing events and feedback loops shape the coalition of interest groups in policymaking through implementations of power mechanisms. Our framework is tested through two different power stories of energy transition in Iran and Germany. Our findings reveal that the centrally planned economy of Iran leaves society with a negligible or passive role in the energy transition. The passive role of society in the energy transition is mainly caused by subsidizing energy. In addition, the financial and economic crisis resulting from other macro-economic challenges, such as sanctions, may exacerbate the minor involvement of civil society in the slow expansion of renewables in Iran. By contrast, as a robust economy with a corporatist tradition, Germany has made a strong advocacy coalition of energy transition that resulted in political incentives for substantial renewable energy deployment. Regarding the theoretical question of the power dynamics in divergent countriesâ energy transitions, the proposed framework based on the interest group coalitions and power mechanism offers an understanding of the social character of energy transitions
New urban agenda Berlin : transdisciplinary research for science and urban society
Involutions of halphen pencils of index 2 and discrete integrable systems
We constructed involutions for a Halphen pencil of index 2, and proved that the birational mapping corresponding to the autonomous reduction of the elliptic Painlevé equation for the same pencil can be obtained as the composition of two such involutions.TU Berlin, Open-Access-Mittel - 2022DFG, 195170736, TRR 109: Diskretisierung in Geometrie und Dynami
Von Terahertz bis Röntgenstrahlung : Anregungen zweidimensionaler Materialien
The recent rise of two-dimensional materials attracted a tremendous amount of interest in the fields of photonics and optoelectronics, as they are promising candidates for next-generation devices. Materials, which are under extensive investigation, are graphene and monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDC). While graphene is a semi-metal, certain monolayer TMDCs are semiconductors exhibiting tightly bound electron-hole pairs -- excitons, which dominate their optical response to a large extent. The light-matter interaction of two-dimensional materials composes the footing of their excitation dynamics. This incorporates the excitation of excitons in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Because of exciton-phonon interaction a subsequent transfer from optically excited coherent to incoherent excitons occurs. For molybdenum-based TMDCs calculations and optical experiments suggest that the excitons at the optical active K(+/-) points form the global minimum. In contrast, for tungsten-based TMDCs it seems that momentum-indirect dark excitons with electron and hole at different valleys in the Brillouin zone are the energetically lowest lying states. Time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) is a method to measure the ultrafast electron dynamics directly in momentum space. In case that tr-ARPES is also able to access Coulomb-correlated two-particle states this experimental method might be the smoking gun to proof the presence of the momentum-indirect states. In this thesis, we develop a microscopic description of the temporal dynamics of excitonic time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy with the focus on phonon-mediated relaxation of optically excited excitons. We show that tr-ARPES is able to access excitons and quantify the spectroscopic signatures of coherent and incoherent excitons in tr-ARPES. Additionally, we suggest coherent pump Fourier transform ARPES to measure the exciton coherence lifetime with great accuracy. Here, we combine a coherent tr-ARPES experiment with a second pump pulse and investigate the tr-ARPES signal as function of the time delay to the second pump pulse.
Moreover, van der Waals materials enable the construction of heterostructures of different atomically-thin materials. Here, after excitation of the distinct materials different interfacial energy and charge transfer mechanisms occur. In particular, we investigate a WSe2-graphene stack and study the coupling mechanisms of Förster, Dexter, and phonon-assisted tunneling. In addition, we propose a new energy transfer mechanism: interlayer Meitner-Auger energy transfer. Here, a non-radiative exciton recombination leads to intraband transitions in graphene and therefore to a hot hole distribution deep in the valence band.
Besides intralayer excitons, van der Waals heterostructures exhibit also interlayer excitons, where electron and hole are in different materials. We propose that interlayer excitons in certain hybrid inorganic/organic systems might form a new many-body excitonic ground state. Therefore, semiconductors functionalized by organic molecules might be the ideal candidate for the experimental realization of the elusive excitonic insulator. Using a proper description for the new many-body ground state based on a Bogoliubov description, we calculate the excitonic phase diagram of a WS2-F6TCNNQ stack as function of the relevant experimental parameters band gap (tunable by applied voltage), temperature, and dielectric environment. We show that all excitonic phases, namely semi-metal, semiconductor, and excitonic insulator have unique optical signatures in the far-infrared to terahertz (THz) regime.
Besides monolayer TMDC excitons excited by visible wavelengths and intraexcitonic transitions, present in excitonic insulators, and excited by long wavelength radiation, also core electrons can be excited by X-ray radiation. X-ray absorption spectroscopy is divided into X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). The former constitute transitions of core electrons into unoccupied conduction band states and is typically described by Fermi's golden rule. The latter accounts for ionization of core electrons from the material and is typically described in a high-order multiple-scattering theory. Here, we aim for a consistent description of both processes within a Maxwell coupled spatio-temporal Bloch formalism. Within this formalism we describe the polarization dependence of core transitions, the radiative and Meitner-Auger recombination channels of core electrons and give microscopic insights into the spectral signatures observed in EXAFS beyond point scattering theory. Moreover, the correct inclusion of the Bloch character of solid state core electrons allows us to assign so far uninterpreted features in the Fourier transformed EXAFS spectrum of graphene.
Improving the vertical modeling of tropospheric delay
Accurate tropospheric delays from Numerical Weather Models (NWM) are an important input to space geodetic techniques, especially for precise real-time Global Navigation Satellite Systems, which are indispensable to earthquake and tsunami early warning systems as well as weather forecasting. The NWM-based tropospheric delays are currently provided either site-specific with a limited spatial coverage, or on two-dimensional grids close to the Earth surface, which cannot be used for high altitudes. We introduce a new method of representing NWM-derived tropospheric zenith hydrostatic and wet delays. A large volume of NWM-derived data is parameterized with surface values and additional two or three coefficients for their vertical scaling to heights up to 14 km. A precision of 1â2 mm is achieved for reconstructing delays to the NWM-determined delays at any altitudes. The method can efficiently deliver NWM-derived tropospheric delays to a broader community of space geodetic techniques.DFG, 434617780, SFB 1464: Relativistische und quanten-basierte GeodĂ€sie (TerraQ
Modification of the Electrochemical Surface Oxide Formation and the Hydrogen Oxidation Activity of Ruthenium by Strong Metal Support Interactions
A major hurdle for the wide spread commercialization of proton exchange membrane based fuel cells (PEMFCs) and water electrolyzers are the durability and high cost of noble metal catalysts. Here, alternative support materials might offer advantages, as they can alter the properties of a catalyst by means of a strong metal support interaction (SMSI) that has been shown to prevent platinum oxidation and suppress the oxygen reduction reaction on titanium oxide supported platinum nanoparticles deposited on a carbon support (Pt/TiOx/C). Herein, we report a novel Ru/TiOx/C catalyst that according to tomographic transmission electron microscopy analysis consists of partially encapsulated Ru particles in a Ru/TiOx-composite matrix supported on a carbon support. It is shown by cyclic voltammetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy that ruthenium oxidation is mitigated by an SMSI between Ru and TiOx after reductive heat-treatment (Ru/TiOx/C400°C,H2). As a result, the catalyst is capable of oxidizing hydrogen up to the onset of oxygen evolution reaction, in stark contrast to a Ru/C reference catalyst. PEMFC-based hydrogen pump measurements confirmed the stabilization of the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) activity on Ru/TiOx/C400°C,H2 and showed a â3-fold higher HOR activity compared to Ru/C, albeit roughly two orders of magnitude less active than Pt/C.DFG, 390776260, EXC 2089: e-conversionBMWi, 03ET6096A, Verbundprojekt: innoKA - Materialinnovationen fĂŒr die PEM-Brennstoffzelle - Platinfreie Kathode, anodenseitige Materialstabilisierung durch neue Katalysatorkonzept; Teilvorhaben: Synthese neuer (Ko-)Katalysatoren fĂŒr die Anode und deren Integration sowie die von platinfreien Kathodenkatalysatoren in MEAs
