Characterisation of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis alternative sigma factor SigG: its operon and regulon.

    Get PDF
A major step in the pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the ability to survive inside macrophages, where it is exposed to a number of DNA damaging agents. The alternative sigma factor SigG has been shown to be upregulated by DNA damaging agents and by macrophage infection, but not to regulate genes of the DNA repair pathway. Here we show that SigG is expressed from at least two promoters, the most dominant of these being the DNA damage inducible RecA_Ndp promoter. This promoter is located within the annotated coding region of SigG and so the correct translational start site was determined experimentally and found to be 114 bp downstream of the annotated start site. Examining the gene expression profile of a SigG over-expression strain found a small number of genes to up-regulated, two of these encoded proteins containing glyoxylase-like domains

Cappuccino and specific heat versus heat of vaporization

    Get PDF
A cappuccino is prepared by adding about 50 mL frothing, foaming milk to a cup of espresso. Whole milk is best for foaming and the ideal milk temperature when adding it to the espresso is 65 °C. The espresso itself may be warmer than that. During the heating the milk should not burn, as that would spoil the taste. The best way is to heat the milk slowly while stirring to froth the milk and create foam. But modern cappuccino machines in restaurants do not have time for slow heating. Could we heat the milk by just adding hot water?

Idiomatic meaning of IDIOM "halcyon days" in institutional discourse: A contextual analysis

    Get PDF
In this paper, the authors show how the meaning of halcyon days changes in different contexts of institutional discourse revealing potential or rearranging existing semantic primitives (semes) in its semantic structure. Primary attention of the authors is focused on the question how the structural, semantic and functional information on the idiom is to be presented in a monolingual idiom dictionary. The suggested dictionary entry comprises a number of constituent parts, each providing a different type of information about the idiom presented. The constituents of an idiom dictionary entries are as follows: 1. an idiom (lemma), 2.grammatical information (number, structural type, usage information), 3. temporal markers (old or modern, with the reference to the time of appearance in the language), 4. social markers (used by some community, professionals: Naval, Aviation, University staff etc. ), 5.territorial markers (US, UK, Canada), 6. definitions 7. examples revealing implicit senses of the idiom, 8. etymology, 9. cross-references to other entries

Statistical memory of meg signals at photosensitive epilepsy

    Get PDF
Here we discuss the remarkable role of the statistical memory effects in the human brain functioning at photosensitive epilepsy (PSE). We have analyzed three independent statistical memory quantifiers for the magnetoencephalographic (MEG) signals. These quantifiers reflect the dynamical characteristics of neuromagnetic brain responses to a flickering stimulus of different color combinations. Results for a group of control subjects are contrasted with those from a patient with PSE. The emergence of the strong memory and the transition to a regular and robust regime of chaotic behavior of the signals in separate areas is characteristic for a patient with PSE versus a healthy brain. © 2008 World Scientific Publishing Company

On solving diffraction problems for the junctions of open waveguides in the classes of distributions

    Get PDF
This study addresses some peculiarities in the application of method of Fourier transformation to solving the problems of electromagnetic wave diffraction on dielectric bodies bounded by coordinate lines or surfaces. Emphasis is on the two dimensional Helmholtz equation with a real piecewise constant coefficient. The solutions to this equation are established in the classes of distributions of slow growth at infinity

Investigation of endovenous laser ablation of varicose veins in vitro using 1.885-μm laser radiation

    Get PDF
© 2016 Springer-Verlag London This paper presents the results of endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) of varicose veins in vitro using radiation of a solid-state laser based on the crystal LiYF4:Tm, with a wavelength of 1.885 μm and power output of around 3 W. An experimental series with saline solution and red blood cell (RBC) suspension in the venous lumen was performed to identify the impact of a heated carbonized layer precipitated on the fiber end face versus the efficiency of EVLA. Results of these experiments confirmed that the presence of a heated carbonized layer on the fiber end face increases the efficiency of EVLA

On the Existence of a Generalized Solution of the Saturated-Unsaturated Filtration Problem

    Get PDF
© 2018, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd. We study the existence of a generalized solution of an initial–boundary value problem describing the process of unsteady filtration of a liquid in a bounded region of an n-dimensional space. We consider the case in which the Kirchhoff transformation used to determine the generalized solution takes the real axis into a semiaxis bounded below. An auxiliary problem is constructed. It is proved that any solution of the auxiliary problem is a solution of the problem under study. The solvability of the auxiliary problem is established by using the method of semidiscretization in time and the Galerkin method
