The gaps between healthcare service and building design : a state of the art review
Healthcare buildings are designed to achieve diverse objectives, ranging from providing appropriate environments where care can be delivered to communities to increasing operational efficiency and improving patient flows and the patient experience. Improvements in
operational efficiency should result from state-of-the-art buildings, more appropriate layouts, departmental adjacencies, efficient clinical and business processes and enhanced information systems. However, complexities around requirements and stakeholders management may prevent the achievement of such objectives. The aim of this article is to identify and understand how healthcare services (re)design and building design can be integrated to facilitate increased performance both in terms of service delivery and future changes. Findings indicate that current approaches and innovation are restricted due to functional barriers in the design process, and that there is a need to support the development of operations driven design through time (e.g. flexible and durable) that satisfies diverse needs
On the Graceful Game
A graceful labeling of a graph with edges consists of labeling the
vertices of with distinct integers from to such that, when each
edge is assigned as induced label the absolute difference of the labels of its
endpoints, all induced edge labels are distinct. Rosa established two well
known conjectures: all trees are graceful (1966) and all triangular cacti are
graceful (1988). In order to contribute to both conjectures we study graceful
labelings in the context of graph games. The Graceful game was introduced by
Tuza in 2017 as a two-players game on a connected graph in which the players
Alice and Bob take turns labeling the vertices with distinct integers from 0 to
. Alice's goal is to gracefully label the graph as Bob's goal is to prevent
it from happening. In this work, we study winning strategies for Alice and Bob
in complete graphs, paths, cycles, complete bipartite graphs, caterpillars,
prisms, wheels, helms, webs, gear graphs, hypercubes and some powers of paths
For a Typology of Participation in Community Artistic Practices: the experience of three theater groups in Brazil and Portugal
The article aims to address the participatory dimension as a central feature in contemporary artistic creation, deepening the relationship between processes and results. It has as a starting point the practices of three theater groups in Brazil and Portugal, articulating them with the literature on community artistic practices and civic and political participation. From empirical data, based on participant and non-participant observation and gathering of field notes, structural dimensions of the qualities of the participation experiences in artistic processes were identified, namely: forms of participation of communities (non-professional); dynamics of creative processes; core themes; relationship between professionals and communities; and spaces of creation and presentation
As (des)sonorizações e a neutralização da vibrante : atitudes e concepções lingüísticas
This article discusses linguistic attitudes and conceptions (beliefs and prejudices) of 20 teachers regarding the ‘German accent’ ((de)voicing of consonants and neutralization of the vibrant) and their implications in their social practices in school lessons, in three German-Portuguese bilingual communities in Rio Grande do Sul. To conclude with, a reflection about how teachers’ conceptions relate to the treatment they dispense to linguistic traces in face to face interactions. The present investigation is inserted in the Interactional Sociolinguistics and in the Sociolinguistics field, specifically in linguistic variation and bilingual studies, and it is especially rooted in linguistic attitudes and conceptions. This research matches instruments and analytical categories of both quantitative and qualitative approaches, examining both teachers’ practices and their linguistic attitudes and conceptions. The results point to educational and identity conflicts which are reflected in speakers’ attitudes of solidarity or linguistic differentiation regarding the use and rating of linguistic variation, as well as in the treatment dispensed to the linguistic features of these communities
The objective of this article is to present a brief study on the wrong path of the poetry in the service of the Third Reich, whose roots raise to the tradition of the proto-nationalist and romantic nationalist poetry of the 19th Century. By interpreting the poems “Die Mutter” (“The Mother”) by Josepha Berens-Totenohl, “Deutsche Ostern 1933” (“German Easter of 1933”) by Heinrich Anacker, “Dem Führer” (“To the Führer”) by Will Vesper, and “Wir” (“We”) by Anne Marie Koeppen, we can observe the presence of discursive marks that remit to the Nazi jargon, what make them mere instruments of the totalitarian propaganda
Aspekte populärer Musik Brasiliens
The Brazilian Choros combines rhythmic gesture, ongoing harmonies and sequences of motives in one single melody. This technique derives from baroque music and can be compared to the suites for cello by J.S.Bach. The Portuguese colonists brought their baroque music with them to Brazil where it later merged with the rhythmic music brought in by the West African slaves. In this means the first original Brazilian music was generated. This article will argue that both musical idioms are not as separated as one may believe
JEGUATÁ: O CAMINHAR ENTRE OS GUARANI
In this article the guarani ‘walk’ is elected as reflection’s object as from ethnographical frequentation in some spaces where mbyá and nhandeva groups can be actually found and circulating in eastern Rio Grande do Sul. As a specific form of mobility based on differentiated lecture of the elements in space, jeguatá or just guatá, (walk in the guarani idiom) will be here analyzed in interface with shamanism, as a cosmopolitical form through whichspaces are understood, forefront the presence and absence, and consequently alterity’s influence as identified by these groups.RESUMO: Neste artigo o ‘caminhar’ guarani é eleito como objeto de reflexões a partir da freqüentação etnográfica de alguns espaços onde se encontram e circulam atualmente grupos mbyá e nhandeva na região leste do Rio Grande do Sul.
Does language make a difference? An experimental exam on the motivated sensitivity in the judgement of brazilian governmental auditing
_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis study aimed at examining the occurrence of motivated sensitivity
in the analyses of economical, financial and patrimonial information carried out
by Brazilian government auditors, which results from the influence of linguistic
preference in their processing. Methodology used was field experiment: two groups
formed at random were exposed to the manipulation of the linguistic variable
(textual and numerical). Subjects were government auditors from an agency in
charge of inspecting both Brazilian states and the federal government. Collected
data was analyzed by using Anova and Chi-Squared test. Results indicate
that the preference for linguistic styles guide the attention and interpretation
of analyses carried out, which may interfere with the perception of reliability
of the information being examined by government auditors, as well as with
reaching professional judgment. This research contributes to the understanding
of part of the judgment process, as well as of motivational factor effects acting
on these professionals. It may also guide actions of risk mitigation in the case of
relevant judgments
The impact of the urban canyon geometry in the nocturnal heat island intensity: analysis by a simplified model adapted to a GIS
THIS (Tool for Heat Island Simulation). Urban geometry is one of the main factors influencing the development of urban heat islands. The study of urban geometry requires a characterization of urban canyons, which can be usually measured by the H/W ratio (a relationship between the height and the width of a street), a concept applied in a numerical model by Oke in 1981. The aim of this paper is to verify the impact of the canyon geometry on the intensity of the nocturnal urban heat islands. For this purpose, measurements of climate data and urban geometry were conducted in two Brazilian cities. The values of heat island intensity were cross-examined to those generated with the application of the original Oke's model. Therefore, this latter was calibrated and adapted to run in a GIS platform, allowing the incorporation of a geometric parameter other than the H/W ratio - the roughness length. Then, this process produced a new calculation tool, which is called THIS (Tool for Heat Island Simulation). The new model was applied to simulate some hypothetical urban scenarios representing several urban canyons types. The results showed that the urban canyons with the largest roughness reduce the nocturnal heat island intensities in relation to an urban canyon of the same H/W value, but presenting lower roughness rates instead.
This article analyzes two oral narratives produced in a school in Santa Maria do Herval (RS). These narratives are peculiar because of the frequent code switching, sometimes from Portuguese to standard German, sometimes from standard Portuguese to the dialectal variety spoken in that particular community. The first narrative to be analyzed is produced in the story telling time, in which the librarian tells the children a story from a picture book, switching the code between Portuguese and German. The second narrative is a story told by the class teacher during talking in circle, also based on a picture book. The code switching in this narrative involves teacher/pupils interaction directly. The use of both languages is, as mentioned by Breunig (2005), a cultural responsive pedagogy, since the language spoken at home by most children is being positively valued at school. Furthermore, teachers’ practices are close to those carried out by the children at home
