âClash of civilizationsâ, Crusades, Knights and Ottomans : an analysis of Christian-Muslim interaction in the Mediterranean
In a world that has become so powerfully gripped by a possible escalation of a âclash of
civilizationsâ that could spiral out of control, interest in the history of Christian-Muslim
encounters and violence is on the rise. The aim of this chapter is to provide some
historical depth to a debate that often tends to be shallow in its appreciation of a complex
legacy of interaction between different people. It will commence with an overview
of the recent debate that emerged in response to the ideas of Samuel P. Huntington.
It will then consider the historical implications of the crusades in the way they have
come to colour contemporary West-Muslim relations. Finally, the chapter will consider
a number of naval battles between the Knights Hospitallers of St. John the Baptist and
the Ottoman Empire as a case study in early modern Christian-Muslim interaction.
This relationship will be looked at from the religious angle, but other factors that informed
this conflict, such as status and masculinity, will also be considered.peer-reviewe

La ragione \ue8 the candle of the Lord, lumen Domini (Whichcote), lume derivato: lumen de lumine, participata similitudo rationis aeternae (Smith).
The Past âInterpreterâ. Historical Stratifications in the Ritual Symbolism of Saint Joseph Festivals and Holy Week in Sicily
dibattito in campo religioso antropologico e storico.
Possiamo e dobbiamo tornare a chiederci: puĂČ
contesti festivi in corso? The themes of cultural continuity and âsurvivalâ of ritual symbolism have been at the centre of
debate in the anthropological and historical religious fields. They became topical again in relation to the
issue of the patrimonialization of âtraditionalâ religious festivals such as Saint Joseph and Holy Week,
festivals whose ritual symbolism (sacred banquet, procession, evergreen branches, ritual breads, songs and dances) shows an evident pre-Christian and agrarian root. A number of questions emerge about both the usefulness of historical sources (archaeological and documentary) with regard to the understanding of contemporary ritual reality, and about the issue of the chronological continuity of practices and beliefs; these deserve to be reconsidered on the basis of renewed research and observations, considering the dissolution of what has been defined as ârural civilizationâ and the renewed interests towards immaterial patrimony by communities searching for their identity matrices. We can and must go back to asking ourselves: can material and immaterial tokens of the past, even the remotest ones, help us understand what we observe in current festive contexts
Catechesis in Italy between the Two Vatican Councils - 1870-1962
The article endeavours to give a birdâs eye view of catechesis in Italy as from 1870 to the threshold of Vatican Council II â 1962. The point of departure is a study of the use of the Catechism as the handbook for Catechesis. The study will then move on study the efforts of individuals â from priests to Pope Pius X â who sought to positively influence catechesis through their ministry and how different Congresses and Conventions helped in trying to formulate a more coherent catechesis throughout Italy. Finally, the paper will end by a study of the Active Method which was to be the unifying factor for catechesis in Italy prior to Vatican Council II.peer-reviewe
Orations on the victory of the Order of St John over the Turks in 1565 and on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of Valletta in 1566
The first Chapter General meeting of the Order of St John held after the victory over the Turks in the Great Siege of 1565, took place on 10 February of the following year. Before dealing with the agenda of the day, orations were delivered. One of these was presented by Augustinian Fr Spiritus Pelo Anguisciola who would yet deliver another oration, a month later, on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of Valletta, in March 1566. The text of the latter had been published by Gian Francesco Abela in 1647. The texts of both orations -taken from original manuscripts discovered by the present author -are being reproduced in this paper. The text of the former is being published herein for the first time.peer-reviewe
Catechesis in Europe during the 20th century
During the 20th century, the teaching of the Catechism, and all the other forms of religious education were undergoing very serious changes and transformations. As a result of these transformations, we get the gradual introduction of the Bible as one of the main sources of the pastoral activity of the Church, especially catechesis. The Bible emerged from a period of hibernation into which it had entered for several centuries. In this work, the catechetical endeavours of Germany, of France and of Malta are highlighted. In this respect, we find the Munich method and to a much larger extent the Kerygmatic method, in Germany. In France, the use of the Bible is more linked to individual persons who, each in his or her own way tried to give a more central place to the Bible, thus opening the way to a more biblical catechesis. In Malta, we get Fr Ä orÄĄ PRECA, who through his writings of a catechetical and educational nature gave the Word of God to the Maltese people in the vernacular.peer-reviewe
Three published books of sermons delivered in Malta between 1694 and 1754
The identification of texts of sermons delivered in Malta during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries would make possible a study of the oratorical styles, themes treated, and languages used in their delivery. This, in turn, would enable a better understanding of the impact that such an important albeit ignored means of verbal communication had on its contemporary audience. In the present short study three unrecorded published books containing sermons are described and briefly discussed.peer-reviewe
