    Qualitative Studies of Nonlinear Hybrid Systems

    A hybrid system is a dynamical system that exhibits both continuous and discrete dynamic behavior. Hybrid systems arise in a wide variety of important applications in diverse areas, ranging from biology to computer science to air traffic dynamics. The interaction of continuous- and discrete-time dynamics in a hybrid system often leads to very rich dynamical behavior and phenomena that are not encountered in purely continuous- or discrete-time systems. Investigating the dynamical behavior of hybrid systems is of great theoretical and practical importance. The objectives of this thesis are to develop the qualitative theory of nonlinear hybrid systems with impulses, time-delay, switching modes, and stochastic disturbances, to develop algorithms and perform analysis for hybrid systems with an emphasis on stability and control, and to apply the theory and methods to real-world application problems. Switched nonlinear systems are formulated as a family of nonlinear differential equations, called subsystems, together with a switching signal that selects the continuous dynamics among the subsystems. Uniform stability is studied emphasizing the situation where both stable and unstable subsystems are present. Uniformity of stability refers to both the initial time and a family of switching signals. Stabilization of nonlinear systems via state-dependent switching signal is investigated. Based on assumptions on a convex linear combination of the nonlinear vector fields, a generalized minimal rule is proposed to generate stabilizing switching signals that are well-defined and do not exhibit chattering or Zeno behavior. Impulsive switched systems are hybrid systems exhibiting both impulse and switching effects, and are mathematically formulated as a switched nonlinear system coupled with a sequence of nonlinear difference equations that act on the switched system at discrete times. Impulsive switching signals integrate both impulsive and switching laws that specify when and how impulses and switching occur. Invariance principles can be used to investigate asymptotic stability in the absence of a strict Lyapunov function. An invariance principle is established for impulsive switched systems under weak dwell-time signals. Applications of this invariance principle provide several asymptotic stability criteria. Input-to-state stability notions are formulated in terms of two different measures, which not only unify various stability notions under the stability theory in two measures, but also bridge this theory with the existent input/output theories for nonlinear systems. Input-to-state stability results are obtained for impulsive switched systems under generalized dwell-time signals. Hybrid time-delay systems are hybrid systems with dependence on the past states of the systems. Switched delay systems and impulsive switched systems are special classes of hybrid time-delay systems. Both invariance property and input-to-state stability are extended to cover hybrid time-delay systems. Stochastic hybrid systems are hybrid systems subject to random disturbances, and are formulated using stochastic differential equations. Focused on stochastic hybrid systems with time-delay, a fundamental theory regarding existence and uniqueness of solutions is established. Stabilization schemes for stochastic delay systems using state-dependent switching and stabilizing impulses are proposed, both emphasizing the situation where all the subsystems are unstable. Concerning general stochastic hybrid systems with time-delay, the Razumikhin technique and multiple Lyapunov functions are combined to obtain several Razumikhin-type theorems on both moment and almost sure stability of stochastic hybrid systems with time-delay. Consensus problems in networked multi-agent systems and global convergence of artificial neural networks are related to qualitative studies of hybrid systems in the sense that dynamic switching, impulsive effects, communication time-delays, and random disturbances are ubiquitous in networked systems. Consensus protocols are proposed for reaching consensus among networked agents despite switching network topologies, communication time-delays, and measurement noises. Focused on neural networks with discontinuous neuron activation functions and mixed time-delays, sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of equilibrium and global convergence and stability are derived using both linear matrix inequalities and M-matrix type conditions. Numerical examples and simulations are presented throughout this thesis to illustrate the theoretical results

    Open Mathematics is a challenging notion for theoretical modeling, technical analysis, and numerical simulation in physics and mathematics, as well as in many other fields, as highly correlated nonlinear phenomena, evolving over a large range of time scales and length scales, control the underlying systems and processes in their spatiotemporal evolution. Indeed, available data, be they physical, biological, or financial, and technologically complex systems and stochastic systems, such as mechanical or electronic devices, can be managed from the same conceptual approach, both analytically and through computer simulation, using effective nonlinear dynamics methods. The aim of this Special Issue is to highlight papers that show the dynamics, control, optimization and applications of nonlinear systems. This has recently become an increasingly popular subject, with impressive growth concerning applications in engineering, economics, biology, and medicine, and can be considered a veritable contribution to the literature. Original papers relating to the objective presented above are especially welcome subjects.     Little work seems to be known about stabilization results of highly nonlinear stochastic time-varying delay systems (STVDSs) with Markovian switching and Poisson jump. This paper is concerned with the stabilization problem for a class of STVDSs with Markovian switching and Poisson jump. The coefficients of such systems do not satisfy the conventional linear growth conditions, but are subject to high nonlinearity. The aim of this paper is to design a delay feedback controller to make an unstable highly nonlinear STVDSs with Markovian switching and Poisson jump H∞-stable and asymptotically stable. Besides, an illustrative example is provided to support the theoretical results

    Stochastic stability of viscoelastic systems

    Many new materials used in mechanical and structural engineering exhibit viscoelastic properties, that is, stress depends on the past time history of strain, and vice versa. Investigating the behaviour of viscoelastic materials under dynamical loads is of great theoretical and practical importance for structural design, vibration reduction, and other engineering applications. The objective of this thesis is to find how viscoelasticity affects the stability of structures under random loads. The time history dependence of viscoelasticity renders the equations of motion of viscoelastic bodies in the form of integro-partial differential equations, which are more difficult to study compared to those of elastic bodies. The method of stochastic averaging, which has been proved to be an effective tool in the study of dynamical systems, is applied to simplify some single degree-of-freedom linear viscoelastic systems parametrically excited by wide-band noise and narrow-band noise. The solutions of the averaged systems are diffusion processes characterized by ItĂŽ differential equations. Therefore, the stability of the solutions is determined in the sense of the moment Lyapunov exponents and Lyapunov exponents, which characterize the moment stability and the almost-sure stability, respectively. The moment Lyapunov exponents may be obtained by solving the averaged ItĂŽ equations directly, or by solving the eigenvalue problems governing the moment Lyapunov exponents. Monte Carlo simulation is applied to study the behaviour of stochastic dynamical systems numerically. Estimating the moments of solutions through sample average may lead to erroneous results under the circumstances that systems exhibit large deviations. An improved algorithm for simulating the moment Lyapunov exponents of linear homogeneous stochastic systems is presented. Under certain conditions, the logarithm of norm of a solution converges weakly to normal distribution after suitably normalized. This property, along with the results of KomlĂłs-Major-TusnĂĄdy for sums of independent random variables, are applied to construct the algorithm. The numerical results obtained from the improved algorithm are used to determine the accuracy of the approximate analytical moment Lyapunov exponents obtained from the averaged systems. In this way the effectiveness of the stochastic averaging method is confirmed. The world is essentially nonlinear. A single degree-of-freedom viscoelastic system with cubic nonlinearity under wide-band noise excitation is studied in this thesis. The approximated nonlinear stochastic system is obtained through the stochastic averaging method. Stability and bifurcation properties of the averaged system are verified by numerical simulation. The existence of nonlinearity makes the system stable in one of the two stationary states

    Lattice Boltzmann Methods for Partial Differential Equations

    Lattice Boltzmann methods provide a robust and highly scalable numerical technique in modern computational fluid dynamics. Besides the discretization procedure, the relaxation principles form the basis of any lattice Boltzmann scheme and render the method a bottom-up approach, which obstructs its development for approximating broad classes of partial differential equations. This work introduces a novel coherent mathematical path to jointly approach the topics of constructability, stability, and limit consistency for lattice Boltzmann methods. A new constructive ansatz for lattice Boltzmann equations is introduced, which highlights the concept of relaxation in a top-down procedure starting at the targeted partial differential equation. Modular convergence proofs are used at each step to identify the key ingredients of relaxation frequencies, equilibria, and moment bases in the ansatz, which determine linear and nonlinear stability as well as consistency orders of relaxation and space-time discretization. For the latter, conventional techniques are employed and extended to determine the impact of the kinetic limit at the very foundation of lattice Boltzmann methods. To computationally analyze nonlinear stability, extensive numerical tests are enabled by combining the intrinsic parallelizability of lattice Boltzmann methods with the platform-agnostic and scalable open-source framework OpenLB. Through upscaling the number and quality of computations, large variations in the parameter spaces of classical benchmark problems are considered for the exploratory indication of methodological insights. Finally, the introduced mathematical and computational techniques are applied for the proposal and analysis of new lattice Boltzmann methods. Based on stabilized relaxation, limit consistent discretizations, and consistent temporal filters, novel numerical schemes are developed for approximating initial value problems and initial boundary value problems as well as coupled systems thereof. In particular, lattice Boltzmann methods are proposed and analyzed for temporal large eddy simulation, for simulating homogenized nonstationary fluid flow through porous media, for binary fluid flow simulations with higher order free energy models, and for the combination with Monte Carlo sampling to approximate statistical solutions of the incompressible Euler equations in three dimensions
