An integrated mathematical model of cellular cholesterol biosynthesis and lipoprotein metabolism

Cholesterol regulation is an important aspect of human health. In this work we bring together and extend two recent mathematical models describing cholesterol biosynthesis and lipoprotein endocytosis to create an integrated model of lipoprotein metabolism in the context of a single hepatocyte. The integrated model includes a description of low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor and cholesterol synthesis, delipidation of very low density lipoproteins (VLDLs) to LDLs and subsequent lipoprotein endocytosis. Model analysis shows that cholesterol biosynthesis produces the majority of intracellular cholesterol. The availability of free receptors does not greatly effect the concentration of intracellular cholesterol, but has a detrimental effect on extracellular VLDL and LDL levels. We test our model by considering its ability to reproduce the known biology of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia and statin therapy. In each case the model reproduces the known biological behaviour. Quantitative differences in response to statin therapy are discussed in the context of the need to extend the work to a more {\it in vivo} setting via the incorporation of more dietary lipoprotein related processes and the need for further testing and parameterisation of {\it in silico} models of lipoprotein metabolism

Final Report of the CGIAR Working Group on Deliberation and Decision-Making Processes

Report of a working group established at the mid term meeting of the CGIAR in May 1992 by the Chairman of the Group to examine deliberation, decision making, oversight, and information sharing processes in the CGIAR, and to suggest possible changes to accommodate the recent System expansion. The working group was chaired by Robert Herdt. It recommended the CGIAR continue to hold two meetings each year, with mid term meetings in countries where centers were located; also the use of topical parallel sessions at International Centers Week meetings, and streamlining of discussion procedures. The report urged the establishment of a finance committee composed of donor representatives, and a standing committee on system-level evaluation. It suggested combination of existing public awareness activities.Agenda document, CGIAR Mid Term Meeting, May 1993. A preliminary report was discussed at the CGIAR meeting in October 1992

Parallel and perpendicular cascades in solar wind turbulence

MHD-scale fluctuations in the velocity, magnetic, and density fields of the solar wind are routinely observed. The evolution of these fluctuations, as they are transported radially outwards by the solar wind, is believed to involve both wave and turbulence processes. The presence of an average magnetic field has important implications for the anisotropy of the fluctuations and the nature of the turbulent wavenumber cascades in the directions parallel and perpendicular to this field. In particular, if the ratio of the rms magnetic fluctuation strength to the mean field is small, then the parallel wavenumber cascade is expected to be weak and there are difficulties in obtaining a cascade in frequency. The latter has been invoked in order to explain the heating of solar wind fluctuations (above adiabatic levels) via energy transfer to scales where ion-cyclotron damping can occur. Following a brief review of classical hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) cascade theories, we discuss the distinct nature of parallel and perpendicular cascades and their roles in the evolution of solar wind fluctuations

Attentional processes during P3-based Brain Computer Interface task in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients

    Get PDF
To be available for a wide range of end-users a brain-computer interface (BCI) should be flexible and adaptable to end-usersā€™ cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Peopleā€™s cognitive abilities change according to the disease they are affected by, and people suffering from the same disease could have different cognitive capacities. We aimed at investigating how the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disease, and two different cognitive attentional aspects [1] influenced the usage of a P3-based BC
