RecensionLectures [En ligne], Les comptes rendus, 2013, mis en ligne le 11 juin 2013, URL : http://lectures.revues.org/11713Comme toutes les pratiques musicales, jouer du pan à Trinidad et Tobago n'est pas socialement neutre, mais les caractéristiques de cette pratique en font un objet des plus heuristiques pour la recherche ethnographique : il s'agit d'une musique fondamentalement collective, jouée en particulier pendant le carnaval par des individus d'origine sociale modeste dans la plupart des cas. L'auteure montre que c'est la pratique en son entier du pan -- de la formation progressive des structures des steelbands aux pratiques actuelles -- ainsi que toutes ses manifestations lors d'événements, qui combinent un mélange entre le formel et l'informel, le valorisé et le méprisé, et ce de manières différenciées selon les contextes. Il s'agirait donc d'une contradiction constitutive de la pratique, par ailleurs révélatrice de la permanence des structures esclavagistes et colonisatrices de la société trinidadienne, dans un pays à présent indépendant

Lecture capture using large interactive display systems

There are various software technologies that allow capture and redelivery of lectures. Most of these technologies however rely on the use of proprietary software, often requiring extra efforts from the lecturer in terms of the initial preparation of the lecture material, or in editing and annotating after the lecture to make the material suitable for the students. To review the material students then require access to the proprietary software. This paper describes a system for the lightweight capture of lecture presentations, based on the use of a low-cost large interactive display surface, together with standard Microsoft PowerPoint™ presentation software. The captured version of the presentation includes the original lecture slides, graphical annotations made by the lecturer during the lecture, and the audio recording of the lecture; all saved as a PowerPoint file. In addition, the system adds some annotations and index slides to allow quick and easy access to different segments of the presentation. Presentations can be replayed in part or in full as required, preserving all of the content of the live lecture

Activating Boxmind: an evaluation of a web‐based video lecture with synchronized activities

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of synchronous computer‐mediated communication activities in a video e‐lecture. Previous research has reported that learning is facilitated when communication activities are added to a video lecture. Twelve postgraduate students participated in the study and they viewed a video e‐lecture on the perspective‐taking theory of communication. The lecture consisted of a video image of the lecturer, an audio track, slides, the transcript and a number of communication activities. They were given a pre‐test a week before the lecture and a post‐test a week after. They were also asked to rate the helpfulness of various aspects of the lecture. Students’ post‐test scores were statistically significantly higher than their pre‐test scores. They found the audio track, transcript, slides and activities helpful. The most helpful aspects were the communication activities. The implications of these findings are discussed
