Reconstruction of Crack Cluster in the Rectangular Domain by Ultrasonic Waves

    Get PDF
In the present article we study the reconstruction problem for clusters of linear cracks inside a rectangular domain. The parameters to be reconstructed are the number of cracks and the size and slope of each defect. The scanning is performed by a single ultrasonic transducer placed at a certain boundary point. The input data, used for the reconstruction algorithm, is taken as measured oscillation amplitudes over an array of chosen boundary points. The proposed numerical algorithm is tested on some examples with multiple clusters of cracks whose position and geometry are known a priori

The article introduces to the new issue of the Review, which roughly corresponds with the tenth anniversary of the passing away of Paolo Sylos Labini (PSL). As explained by Roncaglia (2008), the very name of the PSL Quarterly Review is dedicated to the Italian economist, due among other things to the long run relation between PSL and the old series of this journal. The paper discusses PSL’s contributions in the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro Quarterly Review, focusing on his forecast of the recent global crisis, published in 2003. This contribution already contained precise reference – often backed by data for the USA and other economies – to trends and ‘explanations’ of the crisis that several mainstream economists (e.g. Robert Lucas) claimed were impossible to see before the crisis itself. These include the accumulation of excessive household debt, excessive complacency on the side of the Fed, speculative bubbles in the US stock exchange and real estate markets, and the deflationary pressures caused by radical technological innovations. PSL’s example shows that the economists can and often do provide useful services to society, provided they build on solid theories

Workplace Bullying in Italy. Malicious Intent and Role of Anti-discrimination Law. WP C.S.D.L.E. “Massimo D’Antona”.IT – 399/2019

Over the last two decades of the 20th century, bullying in the workplace has been the subject of much attention from Italian labour lawyers and courts. The paper provides an analysis and critique of judicial approaches to defining workplace bullying. It focuses on the two main critical aspects relating to the judge-made de?nition, in particular the role played by the malicious intent of the perpetrator of harassment, on the one hand, and that of other typical elements of the notion of bullying developed in case law and by legal scholars, i.e. continuity between the single events. It is argued that, after some significant developments of case law, the concept of bullying in the workplace appears closer to that of harassment/discrimination under EU and Italian legislation, with the practical implication that most sophisticated anti-discrimination protection techniques aimed at countering harassment by employers could be applicable to various kinds of mobbing. This study also considers the dichotomous approach recently adopted by the Italian Court of Cassation, which has also gone far beyond the notion of mobbing in the strict sense and introduced a new and distinct legal category in order to bring the hitherto excluded cases of harassment back into the scope of protection

Impatti dell'automazione sul mercato del lavoro. Prime stime per il caso italiano.

The causes of the present decline of demand in labor markets in developed countries are subject to considerable theoretical debate. More specifically, according to some authors, globalization and offshoring together with technological innovation, could lead to further negative impacts on real employment. Some studies estimate that the contribution of automation is the actual cause of job loss: in the US the introduction of robots by 2021 could lead to a cut of more than 6% of the workforce (FORRESTER 2016), and as much as 54% in Europe in the coming decades (Bowles 2014), although the greatest impact would occur in developing countries, where automation could weaken the traditional comparative advantages in terms of labor costs (UN 2016). The Italian case is particularly interesting, as the automation was introduced in large enterprises over three decades ago, determining a deep impact in terms of loss for low skilled jobs. This paper aims to provide a first quantification of the impacts on Italian labor market determined by the spread of latest technological innovations, both in terms of employment levels and social/territorial mobility, by differentiating its effects per macro-geographical breakdown of the country

open2noThe year 2014 has marked the tercentenary from the death of Bernardino Ramazzini (1633-1714), universally credited as the founder of Occupational Health (5, 9, 10, 11). Indeed, the renowned physician died on November 5th 1714 in Padua, where he had been appointed as Professor of Practical Medicine at the local prestigious University from the year 1700. To commemorate this anniversary, the professors of Occupational Health of the University of Padua, the Italian Society of Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene (Società Italiana di Medicina del Lavoro eIgiene Industriale, SIMLII), the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) and the University of Padua organized a conference in the wonderful location of Palazzo Bo (Main Hall) under the patronage of the Padua Municipality, the Workers' Compensation Authority (INAIL), the Venetian Region and the Societas Internationalis Historiae MedicinaopenRiva, Michele Augusto; Zampieri, FabioRiva, Michele Augusto; Zampieri, Fabi

Photometric observations and analysis of FY Lac were performed in order to determine the variability characteristics, using measurements taken at Loiano site of Bologna Astronomical Observatory and AAVSO data. The star shows a Long Term variability with a preliminary period of about 274 +/- 28 days and photometric characteristics compatible with a red M5 III giant star, with a temperature of 3420 K degrees.Comment: 9 page
