A citical review of the calculation tool BIMitigation : possibilities and limitations in a user perspective
This thesis examines the utility of BIMitigation, a tool that calculates and visualizes the emissions of greenhouse gas from landscaping projects. Greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are causing warmer temperatures which in turn causes rising sea levels and extreme weather like heat waves and heavy downfalls (Masson-Delmotte et al. 2021:4). Sweden aim to counteract these climate changes and are bounded by law to not cause anu net emissions of greenhouse gas by the year of 2045 (Regeringskansliet 2017; Riksdagsförvaltningen 2017).
The Construction and landscaping industry is responsible for a fifth of Swedish emissions of greenhouse gas and the landscaping industry makes up about a fifth of those emissions (Trafikverket 2022; Boverket 2023). Thereâs a lack of economic incentives in the construction and landscaping industry for building with a lesser climate impact (Boverket 2018:42). For example, is it not and have never been a crucial selling point to build ecologically sustainable (ibid.).
There are indications that the Swedish construction and landscaping industry is becoming more concerned about its emissions. For example, climate declarations for buildings are introduced in the construction industry and similar declarations in landscaping and limits for the declarations are being investigated (Boverket 2020c:11). BIMitigation aims to mitigate climate impact from landscaping projects.
Problem statement
What role can BIMitigation play in minimizing greenhouse gas emissions from landscape projects?
To investigate the problem of the thesis a comparative case study was made. Two cases were investigated and compared, Kv. SkogsstjÀrnan where BIMitigation has been used and Woodhouse Rosendal where it has not. Multiple parties in different roles from each case have been questioned using surveys of qualitative character.
From the surveys it turned out that BIMitigation can be used to minimize greenhouse gas emissions from landscaping projects. It creates awareness and helps to make climate smart decisions within the project group. Most of the informants in the study like the tool but most of them also emphasize the importance of structural changes in the landscaping industry. Changes that might consist of economic incentives or other industry-exceeding regulations that premieres sustainable landscaping
Global warming potential and energy use for Bio-CCS and Bio-CCU from biogas production
To mitigate the human-induced climate change, Sweden has adopted a climate policy framework that states a net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases by the year of 2045 and thereafter negative emissions. To achieve this goal extensive emission mitigation alongside supplementary measures are required. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a concept that collects carbon dioxide with the purpose to store it permanently. When CCS is applied to streams of carbon dioxide (CO2) with biogenic origin, it is called bio-CCS. Bio-CCS is an example of such a supplementary measure. Another concept is bio-CCU, Carbon Capture and Utilization. It means that CO2 with biogenic origin is used in products. One example of bio-CCU is Power to Gas (P2G), where carbon dioxide and hydrogen through methanation produces biomethane, via biological or catalytic processes. By upgrading biogas, amounts of CO2 are separated which make it easily accessible for bio-CCS and bio-CCU.
This study aims to determine the Global Warming Potential (GWP) and primary energy use for bio-CCS and bio-CCU (P2G) from biogas plants via Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and compare it to the fossil fuel alternative. This will be in accordance with the LCA methods used in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Moreover, the study examines a total of six different scenarios, including a reference scenario. One scenario with bio-CCS for permanent storage of CO2 and four scenarios with P2G, either through biological methanation or catalytic methanation. The methanation takes place either at a centralized plant or at the biogas plant where it replaces the traditional upgrade of biogas. The biogas production assumes a 50 GWh/year Swedish co-digestion plant.
Bio-CCS is the alternative with the biggest positive climate impact of the studied scenarios for produced biomethane. LCA shows that by storing CO2 through bio-CCS in saltwater aquifers, GWP is -39.2 g CO2eq/MJ biomethane according to ISO and -26.5 g CO2eq/MJ biomethane according to RED. It is proved that the transportation of CO2 by ship from Sweden to Norway for permanent storage affects the calculation of greenhouse emissions the most. By utilizing CO2 through P2G the GWP is between 4.0â6.4 g CO2eq/MJ biomethane according to ISO and 14.0â14.9 g CO2eq/MJ according to RED.
Primary energy use for bio-CCS is 0.24 MJ/MJ biomethane according to ISO and 0.28 MJ/MJ biomethane according to RED. Primary energy use for bio-CCU is 1.45â1.57 MJ/MJ according to ISO and 1.57â1.67 according to RED. This can be compared to a reference scenario where CO2 is released into the atmosphere with the primary energy use is 0.21 MJ/MJ according to ISO and 0.26 MJ/MJ according to RED.
In the scenarios that include bio-CCU, the differences are relatively small and the best solution is dependent on local conditions. Biomethane from bio-CCU leads to greenhouse gas savings of 84â85 % compared to the fossil fuel comparators (94 g CO2eq/MJ). Therefore bio-CCU meets the criteria for sustainability in RED. The sensitivity analysis shows that the electricity generation source has a large influence on the GWP for bio-CCU. Changing from the Swedish electricity mix to wind power decreases the GWP by 49â51 %. Apart from being used to phase out fossil fuels, biomethane can also be used for energy storage if produced when there is a surplus of electricity, which helps balancing the electric grid.
In conclusion, there is big potential for future bio-CCS and bio-CCU from biogas plants due to the localized source of easily available biogenic CO2. Bio-CCS and bio-CCU can be seen as important tools to reach the climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and phasing out fossil fuels.
Sustainability aspects in Swedish food labeling
Major changes in eating habits, food waste and improvements in production methods are required to achieve a healthy diet from sustainable food systems, which keep us within the planet's boundaries. Sustainability labeling can be seen as crucial to reform our food systems in time. This study has with focus on biodiversity, climate impact and working conditions, compared sustainability aspects of the Swedish food labels: Svenskt Sigill, EU Organic, KRAV and LantmĂ€nnen's âKlimat & Naturâ.
Svenskt Sigill's Climate addition and completion of Working conditions, are similar with KRAV's regulations on climate impact and working conditions. There are also regulations concerning biological diversity within the two certificates. However, the EU Organic and âKlimat & Naturâ have no criteria for working conditions. The label of âKlimat & Naturâ is the only one with requirements for the establishment of specific plant zones to benefit biological diversity in and around the cultivation area.
Currently, certified products cannot be seen as fully sustainable because they do not include all the essential aspects and measurement tools are lacking for several indicators. To obtain more of the complex picture of sustainability, the labels and certifications need to include more indicators and specify existing frameworks as research progresses in different areas of sustainability. The outline of the control systems is also an important part of the puzzle for sustainable consumption and production
Region-Specific Consumption-Based Environmental Impact: Hotspot Identification Using Hybrid MFA-LCA
The environmental impacts caused by rising consumption are pressing problems for society today. Decision makers are tasked with setting and meeting environmental targets to ensure that future generations have access to the same quality of resources (like clean water and air) that we have today. Limiting factors like time and funding exacerbate the challenge of meeting these goals. In this thesis, city- and region-specific consumption data are analyzed to identify consumption-based impact hotspots, i.e. product categories with high environmental impact, and to show how this data is relevant for policy development, prioritization, and assessment. Many studies primarily look at climate change as the sole impact indicator while multiple factors can and do affect the environment. To fill this gap, material flow analysis (MFA), which provides data on the quantities of products consumed in a region, is combined with life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify the environmental impact of a regionâs consumption. Five environmental indicators are evaluated: global warming potential (climate change), eutrophication potential, acidification potential, photochemical ozone formation potential, and resource depletion. Consumption-based environmental impact results are used to identify hotspots and prioritize existing environmental measures. The results indicate that cities and regions have distinct consumption profiles and that local consumption data is relevant for identifying which products should be addressed in order to maximize the environmental benefit. Existing environmental measures for the city of Gothenburg, Sweden, are assessed for effectiveness in reaching environmental targets
