The Palestine-Israel conflict has long been a deeply scrutinized subject, with social media playing a pivotal role in amplifying discussions around this complex issue. However, this dominant phenomenon has only been studied in aspects of discourse with a theoretical purpose. The concrete implications seen from perlocutions in the virtual realm have yet to be reviewed related to this phenomenon. Therefore, this research will reveal it with a pragmatic cyber approach. The research data included language features in the narrative of CNN Arabic Instagram posted throughout January 2022-May 2023. Data were collected using simak and sadap techniques and supplemented by descriptive and reflective notes. The data were analyzed with a pragmatic cyber perspective with a padan method correlating the comparison between lingual and extra-lingual elements. The results showed that in 17 posts throughout 2022-2023 with 40 data. 13 data (30%) found perlocutions to attract attention; 11 data (27%) perlocutions to arouse curiosity; 8 data (20%) perlocutions to distract; 5 data (10%) perlocutions to encourage; 2 data (5%) perlocutions to embarrass; and 1 data (2%) perlocution to frighten. This result indicates CNN Arabic's tendency to maintain Israel's image most subtly and tactically possible: to "attract attention"

Violation of the maxim of agreement can be seen when students are giving very harsh statements and ignoring the rules of the speech partners. The violation of the maxim of sympathy is shown when students do not have sympathy for the speech partner who is having difficulty. “I deserve better grades.” Compliance-gaining perspective of dark triad traits, power distance and academic entitlement in Chinese higher education

Purpose Dark triad (DT) personality traits, that is, Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy, are socially unenthusiastic and predict a range of antisocial behaviors. Academic entitlement, similarly, demonstrates the students’ rising temptation of higher grades without putting corresponding efforts. Based on coercion theory, this research investigated power distance as mediator between DT and academic entitlement (externalized responsibility and entitled expectations). Further, this study examined DT model of personality as a predictor of academic entitlement in Chinese higher education institutions (HEIs). Design/methodology/approach Chinese HEIs were ascertained for data collection. Students (with bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees) responded to 719 questionnaires for data analysis. Hypothesized relationships were examined through partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM). Findings This study established positive and significant direct link between DT and academic entitlement. The indirect effect through power distance was found insignificant between the relationship of DT and academic entitlement. Originality/value Based on coercion theory, this study extends the prevailing literature through unexplored effects of DT on academic entitlement and role of power distance in Chinese HEIs. This study validated the effect of DT on academic entitlement; however, direct-only no-mediation of power distance between the relationships is novel in Chinese HEIs. Moreover, power distance as mediator is novel between the relationships. Hence, this study provides an understanding of mentioned associations and contributes to the literature

The objective of this study was to gain insight into Trevor Noah's intention for employing dark humor through applying Attardo's humor function framework to his stand-up comedy performance "Son of Patricia.  This qualitative research utilized a phenomenological methodology. The investigation aimed to explore the phenomenon of dark humor based on Trevor Noah's personal experiences as conveyed in his act. The study analyzed dark humor found in Trevor Noah's stand-up show "Son of Patricia" through the lens of Attardo's (1994) humor functions. The result showed that the frequent humor function found was defunctionalisation for amusement and the jokes often involve playing with the language followed with social management, decommitment and mediation. Exploring the multifaceted humor function of dark humor in Trevor Noah's show "Son of Patricia" revealed a nuanced and thought-provoking approach to comedy. Noah skillfully employed dark humor as a tool for social management, shedding light on sensitive issues such as race, politics, and societal norms. While dark humor can be polarizing, Trevor Noah demonstrates its potential to be a powerful vehicle for social commentary and awareness

    Communicating a Pandemic

This edited volume compares experiences of how the Covid-19 pandemic was communicated in the Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The Nordic countries are often discussed in terms of similarities concerning an extensive welfare system, economic policies, media systems, and high levels of trust in societal actors. However, in the wake of a global pandemic, the countries’ coping strategies varied, creating certain question marks on the existence of a “Nordic model”. The chapters give a broad overview of crisis communication in the Nordic countries during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic by combining organisational and societal theoretical perspectives and encompassing crisis response from governments, public health authorities, lobbyists, corporations, news media, and citizens. The results show several similarities, such as political and governmental responses highlighting solidarity and the need for exceptional measures, as expressed in press conferences, social media posts, information campaigns, and speeches. The media coverage relied on experts and was mainly informative, with few critical investigations during the initial phases. Moreover, surveys and interviews show the importance of news media for citizens’ coping strategies, but also that citizens mostly trusted both politicians and health authorities during the crisis. This book is of interest to all who are looking to understand societal crisis management on a comprehensive level. The volume contains chapters from leading experts from all the Nordic countries and is edited by a team with complementary expertise on crisis communication, political communication, and journalism, consisting of Bengt Johansson, Øyvind Ihlen, Jenny Lindholm, and Mark Blach-Ørsten. Publishe

The right kind of explanation: Validity in automated hate speech detection

    Get PDF
To quickly identify hate speech online, communication research offers a useful tool in the form of automatic content analysis. However, the combined methods of standardized manual content analysis and supervised text classification demand different quality criteria. This chapter shows that a more substantial examination of validity is necessary since models often learn on spurious correlations or biases, and researchers run the risk of drawing wrong inferences. To investigate the overlap of theoretical concepts with technological operationalization, explainability methods are evaluated to explain what a model has learned. These methods proved to be of limited use in testing the validity of a model when the generated explanations aim at sense-making rather than faithfulness to the model. The chapter ends with recommendations for further interdisciplinary development of automatic content analysis
