    The pressure of deconfined QCD for all temperatures and quark chemical potentials

    A new method for the evaluation of the perturbative expansion of the QCD pressure is presented which is valid for all temperatures and quark chemical potentials in the deconfined phase, and worked out up to and including order g^4.     Rapidity profiles from 3+1D Glasma simulations with finite longitudinal thickness

    We present our progress on simulating the Glasma in the early stages of heavy ion collisions in a non-boost-invariant setting. Our approach allows us to describe colliding nuclei with finite longitudinal width by extending the McLerran-Venugopalan model to include a parameter for the Lorentz-contracted but finite extent of the nucleus in the beam direction. We determine the rapidity profile of the Glasma energy density, which shows strong deviations from the boost invariant result. Both broad and narrow profiles can be produced by varying the initial conditions.     We simulate the creation and evolution of non-boost-invariant Glasma in the early stages of heavy ion collisions within the color glass condensate framework. This is accomplished by extending the McLerran-Venugopalan model to include a parameter for the Lorentz-contracted but finite width of the nucleus in the beam direction. We determine the rapidity profile of the Glasma energy density, which shows deviations from the boost-invariant result. Varying the parameters both broad and narrow profiles can be produced.     Study of orientation effect on nanoscale polarization in BaTiO3 thin films using piezoresponse force microscopy

    We have investigated the effect of texture on in-plane (IPP) and out- of plane (OPP) polarizations of pulsed-laser-deposited BaTiO3 thin films grown on Pt and La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) buffered Pt electrodes. The OPP and IPP polarizations were observed by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) for three-dimensional polarization analyses in conjunction with conventional diffraction methods using x-ray diffraction and reflection high energy electron diffraction measurements. BaTiO3 films grown on Pt electrodes exhibited highly (101) preferred orientation with higher IPP component whereas BaTiO3 film grown on LSCO/Pt electrodes showed (001) and (101) orientations with higher OPP component. Measured effective d(33) values of BaTiO3 films deposited on Pt and LSCO/ Pt electrodes were 14.3 and 54.0 pm/ V, respectively. Local piezoelectric strain loops obtained by OPP and IPP-PFM showed that piezoelectric properties were strongly related to film orientation

    Training Faculty to Adopt the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm, IPP and its Influence on Teaching and Learning: Process and Outcomes

    This is the second of two articles describing the action research undertaken by the three trainees and their trainer (author of this article). After formal training, the training team integrated the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) into their undergraduate courses from fall of 2010 through May 2013 in the College of Professional Studies (CPS) at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The first article was published in this journal in fall 2012 and provided a narrative describing the faculty development process, predicated on the five constructs of the IPP: Context, Experience, Reflection, Action and Evaluation. This article includes a full description of the training protocol, data collection process, and the qualitative data analysis methods. This training team used an Action Research model put forth by Reil over two years and nine months to determine the influence of the IPP on their teaching. This study seeks to provide others who teach at Jesuit Colleges and Universities a rationale for using the IPP both as pedagogy, a curriculum guide along with specific instructional practices, and learning activities. In addition, a replicable IPP training protocol is provided that is based on best practices derived from analogous research in the fields of contemporary learning, cognitive, and educational research. The study also provides the outcomes related to the impact the infusion of the IPP had on the instructors’ curricula, pedagogies, instructional strategies, learning activities, and assessment practices, as well as the student-teacher learning relationship

    On Tao's "finitary" infinite pigeonhole principle

    In 2007, Terence Tao wrote on his blog an essay about soft analysis, hard analysis and the finitization of soft analysis statements into hard analysis statements. One of his main examples was a quasi-finitization of the infinite pigeonhole principle IPP, arriving at the "finitary" infinite pigeonhole principle FIPP1. That turned out to not be the proper formulation and so we proposed an alternative version FIPP2. Tao himself formulated yet another version FIPP3 in a revised version of his essay. We give a counterexample to FIPP1 and discuss for both of the versions FIPP2 and FIPP3 the faithfulness of their respective finitization of IPP by studying the equivalences IPP FIPP2 and IPP FIPP3 in the context of reverse mathematics. In the process of doing this we also introduce a continuous uniform boundedness principle CUB as a formalization of Tao's notion of a correspondence principle and study the strength of this principle and various restrictions thereof in terms of reverse mathematics, i.e., in terms of the "big five" subsystems of second order arithmetic

    Anomalous specific heat in ultradegenerate QED and QCD

    We discuss the origin of the anomalous Tln⁡T−1T\ln T^{-1} behavior of the low-temperature entropy and specific heat in ultradegenerate QED and QCD and report on a recent calculation which is complete to leading order in the coupling and which contains an infinite series of anomalous terms involving also fractional powers in TT. This result involves dynamical hard-dense-loop resummation and interpolates between Debye screening effects at larger temperatures and non-Fermi-liquid behavior from only dynamically screened magnetic fields at low temperature.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, contribution to the Proceedings of Strong and Electroweak Matter 2004 (SEWM04), Helsinki, Finland, 16-19 Jun 200
