Will the humble inherit the Earth? Towards a realistic politics of habitation

    Get PDF
The related notions of habitation and habitability offer a very promising way for framing the conversation about the issues around which environmental political theory has gravitated from its inception: sustainability, environmental justice, preservation. However, the connection between the two must probably be revised in order to produce an ideal of habitation that is useful in the current sociopolitical context. This paper seeks to clarify their mutual relations and explores the way for the politicization of habitation. Underlining the role of nonintentional actions in the past history of habitation, it will argue that, in order to politicize habitation, the latter must be made salient -so that citizens realize that the socionatural relation is not that 'natural'. Ernesto Laclau's notion of the political as an uncovering of contingencies may be useful, while the Lacanian notion of fantasy may be used to explain the gap between current (instrumental) modes of habitation and pervasive (Arcadian) ideals of it. As to how can the relation between habitation and habitability be effectively politicized, this paper will argue that it is the political, rather than politics, what offers a most promising path for re-imagining habitation in our complex and ambivalent societies. Ecological citizenship and newly created spaces for nature are sketched as strategies for politicizing habitation. Bioregionalism is recovered as a radical politics of habitation whose flaws must be avoided if habitation is to be reframed in a mostly urban, hypertechnological world. In this regard, the paper also develops a particular narrative for a reframed habitation, a 'clever adaptation' understood as a regulatory ideal towards which different actions and discourses can be directed.Universidad de Málaga. Habitual Habitation

This abstract presentation will set out a series of observations and precedents related to the relationships formed between humans and the evolving spaces of personal habitation. The work discusses the prospect of future interlocking and divided spaces that humans use for the process of habitation in both the work and the domestic context. The four key design considerations outlined within this relationship are the arrangement of habitation (design), the occupation of that space (purpose), inhabitation of space (user interaction) and the duration of use (space longevity). Some of the main themes that are discussed are the processes of human habitation, why it occurs, the evolving nature of that habitat and the development of habitat for a defined purpose. The presentation will examine a range of particular, purposeful and peculiar human habitat spaces and use them to explore the interactive relationships between humans and the spaces that are created for specific functions e.g., work, leisure and utility. The typography of human habitation is also explored and critiqued to establish a clear picture of the current and future frameworks in which designers, clients and design users are / will be considering interior space. There is also exploration of how human behaviours differ in space that has been specifically created for a purpose and the realities of actual human use and occupation. There is also exploration of the way certain types of interior spaces influence and often dictate human behaviour. This is then reviewed and a future construct is suggested about human behaviour changing and fragmenting according to the surrounding space. A review of the interior designers role in this construct is identified with examination of spatial tactics and external forces within this process. Does interior design hold the key to future human living and working behaviours? Finally, a future habitation hypothesis is presented along with a review of Peter Sloterdijk and Henri Lefebvre’s suggestions and definitions of “Home” and “Habitus” which helps to synthesise some future ideas on interior design and habitation

Feeding of Gammarus lacustris Sars under different conditions of habitation [Translation from: [Trophic relations of freshwater invertebrates.] (ed. G. G. Vinberg) pp.94-98. Leningrad, Zool.Inst.AN SSSR, 1980]

The amphipod Gammarus lacustris, a regular representative of lacustrine communities, often plays a significant role in the transformation of matter and energy. The object of the present work was to clarify the quantitative side of the feeding of the amphipod under different conditions of habitation. Experimental works on determination of the rate of consumption of food and its dependence on body-weight were carried out in the summer periods 1975-1978 on three water-bodies of the Krasnoyarsk region, of different conditions of habitation for the amphipods

The Stover Lake Site (41BW8) on the lower Sulphur River, Bowie County, Texas

    Get PDF
The Stover Lake site (41BW8) is an ancestral Caddo cemetery and habitation site on a natural alluvial rise in the Sulphur River floodplain, about 1.6 km east of the Lake Wright Patman dam. In 1961-1962, several collectors excavated at least 19 Caddo burials at the site and also gathered a collection of sherds from habitation contexts. Notes on the burials and their funerary offerings were provided by the collectors to the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory at The University of Texas at Austin (TARL), and 390 ceramic sherds and one stone gorget from non-burial contexts were donated to TARL by one of the collectors, Janson L. McVay

This paper addresses the notion of habitation from the perspective of Heidegger’s hermeneutical analysis of its meaning. Its purpose is to orient the discussion about the usual meaning of habitation, around the concepts of „lifeworld”, „human being, „Being”, „construction”, „creation” and „speaking” and to approximate the relationship between these and „anotherworld”. The distinction between „habitation” and „the realm of habitation” appears as fundamental.

Site 41SM91 is an ancestral Caddo habitation site on an upland landform east of the Neches River, in the area of Lake Palestine, a large reservoir constructed on the Neches River in the East Texas Pineywoods; the dam is located about 11 km south of the site. The site was found and recorded during a 1957 survey of the proposed reservoir flood pool, and Johnson described it as “a large Frankston Focus habitation site located in a cultivated field on the slope of a large hill to the east of the Neches floodplain”. A large assemblage of ceramic vessel sherds were collected from the surface of the site during the archaeological survey, and these sherds are in the collections of the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin
